Piano music= flute music since it's the exact same notes on the flute as it is on the piano. I play piano sheet music on my flute all the time since they're the same :)

if you want to be a great flute player yes you have to read sheet music and be able to play by ear too. but you dont have to.... but then if you wana be in band you have to look at sheet music. there is some complicated stuff out there too hard for the ear. you can just transpose it. The key to flute ---> clarinet, is that the flute is 1 note lowe, so if it says C play D.
