Opeth is definitely progressive blackened death metal with folk and jazz elements.  This band is progressive melodeath, and both of them are equally as listenable. Being a guitarist for 7 years, these are about as real as it gets to me.

@MetallicOpeth I dunno, they've both got very different approaches in my opinion. Into Eternity has a much more power metal approach. I'm a fan of both bands, though Stu Block is definitely their best vocalist overall

it's a real pity that Chris hasn't joined a band since leaving Into Eternity, though. I mean, I do prefer Stu, I think his vocals are just effin' crazy, but Chris is an incredible vocalist too, and his voice has a sort of pleasantness to it

Maybe when he gets out of his money issues he will?

@XmushroomknotX i disagree, as much as i LOVE stu blocks singing i think chris krall has the timbre that truly fits the band harmoniously, i find their albums without him to be forced and WAY too jumpy even though stu is obviously the better singer

This band just doesn't disappoint. Dead or dreaming and Buried in Oblivion are damn near perfect melodic-death metal albums and The Scattering of Ashes and The Incurable Tragedy are damn near perfect Progressive-death metal albums. I couldn't ask for a better band to come into existence-brutality, melody, emotion...they're like the perfect metal band.
