I love this song. We used to sing this song as a part of a Church service and a part of a Native American ceremony by laying of stones on the ground to honor the dead and Christ. I am not religious and we did this when I was about 11 but some 40 yrs later I still very much remember that. My Church choir does sing this song but that memory still lingers. It's a beautiful song and Joan always had a beautiful voice. She also always sang fantastic lyrics that were portrayed humanitarian views. Unfortunately, this song is a little contradictory. As where there is religion, there is war.

War is caused not by religion but lack of love. The object of all religions is love and peace. God is love. Where there is no real belief in God who is just and merciful then people become bold enough to make war. War is a selfish act of man.

These societies don't exist so unfortunately we have to overcome the discrepancies between religious beliefs if we are to live in harmony and true peace. Only way to do this is have one religion!!! Now, which God/religion would win? Most people have love as you suggest but only for their own. This is where your arguement falls down.

Simon, in the beginning there was only one belief (we may call it religion) and yet there was disharmony. Religion (set of beliefs in a Deity) was not the cause of disharmony but disobedience to God and man's pride. Now, you say which religion and which God? Which came first, religion or disharmony? After disharmony, other religions / gods sprouted. So, which religion will win, or let's rephrase your question, who is the true God?

To reduce religion as a device and the cause of the problems of the world is totally misleading. Man creates the problems, not religion. There are so many laws created by man and yet there is still no discipline. Who judges whether an act is right or wrong or humanitarian? Acts which are inherently wrong such as abortion or euthanasia are being justified as humanitarian. Where did we get our basis of humanitarian standards?

Who said that it is wrong to kill or steal etc...? One cannot disconnect good or bad from God's supernatural law. There must be a first cause or a first mover or an intelligent designer, a God who governs the universe. I do not only hope but I truly believe in God.

It is so clear for me. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day, He rose again. He ascended to Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting, Amen. To say that war and theism always go together is a generalisation; generally one made out of fear.
I understand, however, that it is a popular one in the current climate. It is ironic, how vigilant, atheists usually are about logical fallacies, and yet at times they can be very selective about which fallacies are allowed through.
Here's another generalisation for you:- Atheism has become a reflexive bandwagon, and strayed from its' intellectual roots.

Holy Cow, that is a stupid remark. War isn't terrorism; it is war. There are just wars and unjust wars. Many just wars have been fought in defense against invaders bent on total destruction of the defenders. Are you saying that those who defended themselves against the Nazis or the Soviets or the Khmer Rouge or the Taliban were acting against religious principals? Even the Dalai Lama ordered Tibetan soldiers to fight the Chinese when they invaded. Jeez!

Are you asking why terrorism from the middle east exists? Simple,America along with other countries that practice religious freedom along with social freedoms are looked down upon by the radical element of various islamic groups,and treated as a threat to their way of life. The rise of the western civilization in such a short time has caused a sort of paranoia to groups fearing they will lose their strong hold on those they control. Thus the use of terrorism,not to fight,but to cause fear.
