This is a great video. How well I remember the furor Gobbi set as Scarpia. He established a standard that has never been matched to this listener's ears.
Thank you for posting this lengendary record of the greatest singing in the world.
Singers interpreting this role have much to learn from Gobbi and the era of great singers.
@MIKEBURROWS1 : R. Raimondi better than T. Gobbi ??? Tito Gobbi was simply the greatest Scarpia in the history of opera. Last summer, I saw Ruggero Raimondi as Scarpia in the famous " Arena di Verona " and I can tell you that he is NOT comparable to Tito Gobbi. Raimondi's low notes are very small, the high notes, instead, are powerful but incredibly forced. In addition of this, consider that T. Gobbi was also a great and very credible actor. In other words : Vitellio Scarpia = Tito Gobbi.
Tito Gobbi was a great talent and the BEST Scarpia, a real villain and he reminds me of Dracula, so calculating and cold! I have a stereo record of this with Maria Callas, it is wonderful.
great acting, but I do feel that the voice is a little weak, idk if I should be saying that but he does make up for it with his acting he scares the shit out of me
@Buzaglod - I think what you're hearing is just that it was a very strange voice. Like Maria Callas' voice, there's never been anything quite like it. And you would never mistake him for anyone else. You're right about the acting. I saw him do this live a couple of times. You couldn't take your eyes off him. I just wish I could ever have seen him play it with Maria. I guess I have to wait till I get to heaven! KTJ
hai fotografato esattamente Gobbi. Ottimo, a pieni voti!
Gobbi prints his particular version and emotion on taht act but i dont think he is a crap he has a very talented voice. Just he is make an original version of Scarppia. I´m goig to watch more videos to really apreciatte this singer.
Its fine... you have your opinion and I have mine. I don't really see the remarkable character work either, probably because its meant for TV and not for stage, so I'll watch the Callas production, and let you know... ;-)
PS: He is acting that much because it is probably a TV broadcast, not a real opera production. If you see him in the Tosca production with Callas, he doesn't act that much and doesn't play with the camera that obvious.
What crap! This is practically sprechstimme! Listen to Leonard Warren or Sherrill Milnes to get a stirring account vocally of Scarpia. They have such core and focus! Gobbi talks half of it, throws away the pitch quality, and spreads the sound as oppose to creating a verticality to the notes.
Don't you dare to call it crap! He is a great Scarpia, probably not the best singer on earth, but that's not what counts. He doesn't needs to be vocally perfect, just look at his acting and the interpretation of the music! You may not like it, but don't call it crap because a lot of people believe, that he was the best Scarpia of all times. (do not include me, I like him, but the best living Scarpia is Raimondi.)
If Tito Ghobbi was not to perform, La Kallas refused to take the part.
Simply the best. Watch his walking, the "pésenteur" of the Sacred Monster Servant of the Art is in each and every step of his. The metal of his voice leaves us speachless!!
I agree, but I must say I've just seen (not in YouTube) an amazing Raimoni, playing Scarpia in Madrid. In terms of interpretation, he was outstanding.
Gobbi is the only baritone who makes the last line ("Tosca, you make me forget God!") intelligible--he HEARS the Te Deum happening behind him and realizes that he hasn't been paying attention because of his preoccupation with her. None of the other baritones cited act in such a way, which leaves the line colorless and meaningless. Viva Gobbi!
The best Scarpias were definatelly Gobbi and Taddei. Milnes, Raimondi, Bacquier, Quilico, MacNeil, among others, were also very good but not up to those too.
I guess that's why U call yourself "crazylords!" U are CRAZY! You're comparing the greatest Scarpia of all time Gobbi to Raimondi who is a 2nd rate bass? Even when Raimondi sings the bass roles of Verdi, he doesn't compare to Siepi, Pinza & even Furlanetto! I'm reading some of the other posts here & it's hilarious! GOBBI WAS SCARPIA! His voice was perfectly suited for the role! Everyone else after used Gobbi as the reference! The 2nd best Scarpia after Gobbi was Gabriel Bacquier! Raimondi? Ha!!!
My friend the late George Papageorge used to tell the story about how Gobbi came to Atlanta with the Metropolitan Opera on tour - 1950's, 60's - to sing Tosca, and George was assigned to drive him back to his hotel after Scarpia is killed in Act II.
As he was driving him, George says to Gobbi jokingly "Mr Gobbi, you are making miss the last Act! What happens in Act III?"
To which Gobbi, without missing a beat, answered "I don't know, I've never stayed to watch!"
Great Tito Gobbi certainly was one of the greatest baritones of all times, and an excellent actor as well. He made the absolute duet in Tosca with "La Divina", Maria Callas, who also possessed a unique voice and acting talent. One must see and hear them here "Callas & Gobbi in "Torture scene" from Tosca Paris 1958".
Tonebarry - This clip is from a short series on BBC TV, directed by Patricia Foy, I think - 1970's. Michael Denison talks to Gobbi about his assumption of an operatic character with examples from 'Falstaff', 'Il Tarro', 'Tosca' - and possibly 'Otello', though I'm not certain about the last one. Wish the BBC would repeat such wonderful programmes as this instead of the rubbish they keep dragging out of their archives!
BRAVISSIMO MAESRO!!!!
I have only ever seen and heard one singer that I thought brought off a better embodiment of the villainous Scarpia and that is Greer Grimsley. He's an amazing artist and with his size and overall look and the utter power and beauty of his voice he IS EVERY BIT the evil Scarpia. If you ever get the chance to see him in the role do it!
Ah...the finest villain in all of opera. Thank you for posting this clip. It's wonderful to watch Gobbi sing Te Deum. For me, he defined the role of Scarpia just as Callas defined Tosca. I continue to love him...
Wasn't this originally from a wonderful programme (or short series)on BBC TV in the seventies, where Michael Denison talks to his old friend, Tito Gobbi (both met in making 'The Glass Mountain'), while Gobbi prepares in turn to sing from 'Il Tabarro', 'Tosca' and 'Falstaff'? I had long given up hope of seeing this again - thank you so much for this treasure. But have you the rest of the items? And how did you come by them?
Absolutely amazing!-Have never seen this clip-Always wished that the Te Deum was recorded on tape - and discovered it this evening. First saw Gobbi sing this at Covent garden in 1970. A legend. Many thanks for posting this.
I was privileged to see Gobbi perform this role at least 7 times, including dress rehearsals. He directed two. No one has come close to him. Each role he sang was very different. This is my favorite scene in opera when sung by Gobbi. It is even more impressive when you hear the priests processing singing the Te Deum while Scarpia plots such evil things. In the performances I saw the way he said, "Scarrrrpia" was chilling. This not quite as evil sounding.
OUTSTANDING and highly fascinating clip!!! Thank you VERY much for posting this!!! What an outstanding artist Gobbi was! I had the good fortune to see him three times at Lyric Opera of Chicago: once as Don Giovanni (1969), twice as Baron Scarpia (1971 and 1973: both times in that classic production which he staged!).
I, also, had the priviledge of seeing & hearing Gobbi's Scarpia & Giovanni at Lyric Opera of Chicago! We may have been there at the same performances! What a thrill! For me, Gobbi was the definitive Scarpia, just as Virginia Zeani is the definitive Violetta, in La Traviata! Gobbi and Zeani both inhabited their roles, and gave us many incredible performances!
Thank you for this wonderful posting; brought back so many treasured memories.

Wish the BBC would repeat such wonderful programmes as this instead of the rubbish they keep dragging out of their archives!

Thank you for that information. Of course I agree entirely about the BBC.

I have been privileged to see Tito Gobbi as Scarpia at the Metropolitan Opera in New York
twice.....There is no one who sings 'Baron Scarpia' better....Thank you for this video..and hope you will add more.....
I have seen his movies of the operas and have most of his recordings...In my opinion, the best 'acting' baritone of all times.

Thank you !! Thank you!!! It brought back so many memories. I can hear HIM singing it whenever I see Tosca.

He IS Scarpia.
Other baritones sing the role, many greatly, many not so great, but Gobbi isn't Gobbi any more when he's on-stage.

Ah...the finest villain in all of opera. Thank you for posting this clip. It's wonderful to watch Gobbi sing Te Deum. For me, he defined the role of Scarpia just as Callas defined Tosca. I continue to love him...

Interesting to watch how, as he was dressing up, he was turning into Scarpia, and it was Scarpia already, who shaked the assistance's hand.

Forever my Scarpia, BRAVO, GOBBI!!!
