Y'all should check out Boz Scagg's rendition. It's on his classic album, self-titled... I think it was released 1969 and may have been his debut album. His rendition is the best I have ever heard of this song. The cover portrait is by Elaine Mays. Peace. Love is the Answer.
Great is to Depression like Civil is to war. This song is so timely. RIP Odetta. One of your greater performances. We'll be singing this song for the next three hundred years, and it will still be timely. They just don't write 'em like that anymore. Thanks Dr. John for getting Odetta to sing with you on this one. You both did a terrific job.
I have not had a job in almost two years. Laid-off after a 20 yr. career. I did everything I was supposed to do, college, built-up experience etc... now no one wants a qualified person. Like the song says.........it is appropriate today as it was in the 1930's.
In 1932 -- worst year of the Great Depression -- this song was a number 1 hit twice, for the versions of both Rudy Vallee and Bing Crosby. Written by Yip Harburg (lyricist of The Wizard of Oz) and Jay Gorney, I think it's the greatest song ever about economic hard times in America. And this bluesy version by Odetta and the Doctor is my favorite.
Good video you've made. Before watching it, I can't believe I didn't get the reference to WW I - yet another way in which ordinary people were cruelly used to suit the interests of the wealthy. The pics visuals you've included are well-chosen. Thumbs up.
Abbey Lincoln does a wonderful cover of this song as well. after hearing her perform brother can you spare a dime, i've been a fan of the song and the artist....
love the blues version. but the message is the same. it seems when you do everything the government tells you to do, somehow, the little guy...regular hard working American, get's screwed. ...uncle sam, can you spare a dime of our money, or is it all tied up with your banking friends
Excellent "bluesy" version. Odetta was a great singerin. May she rest in peace, yes. As good as the "folk" Judy Collins' interpretation (Album "Judith").
Great version of a classic song . May Odetta rest in peace.
There won't be much of an American Songbook left thanks to the recent pro-industry copyright laws. The copyright now last 78 years plus optional extensions. The laws were retroactive, so everyone from Woody Guthrie's to John Coltrane's public domain music was privatized so BIG MUSIC can keep charging us to download their music. It sucks. Woody's dying request was to pur all his music in the public domain but now he's owned by BMI.
A movie that should be remade is grapes of wrath. It could be redone to reflect the same happening today. Only today things are going south due to stupidity. Greed is the start of both economic plunges today we have the tech to make it knowledge can save many lives.Abodudeman is a youtuber that gives prectical advice how to survive anywhere I liked the video of a person that used rope to scale a tall tree then set up a hammock and woke to a view of the golden gate bridge ,that view cost big $.
I heard Odetta and Dr. John perform this live on WFUV in NYC about 3 or 4 years ago. I'm not sure if this is that performance or not, but it's an amazing version.
With all of the news about the economy, I felt inspired to look at the Tom Waits version of this song. From there, I've been looking up other versions and I got to this one. This one gives me the chills.
It could easily refer to Al Jolson, but I always thought it referred to fair-weather friends. You know the kind that are your best buddy until you start having problems?
simply the best version of this song I've ever heard - the doctors pianoplaying is sublime!! - can you tell me if its available on any cd anywhere, spadecaller?
i read about her passing in the newspaper. i didn't know who she was. i knew about all those she inspired. she will be remembered and discovered by new generations as a treasure.
I heard this some time back Dr. John doing it that is, and then ran into him and brought it up to him he was very proud of this recording very glad I loved it so much...I believe he told me an up and coming very promising blues man played the slide on it John Campbell... sadly he passed away very early and Dr. John had presided at his marriage..this is a great arrangement of an old classic also try and hear Steve Mann's great finger pick version it's excellent as well...
This tears at my heart, and horribly - it's real. The photos show the truth - that the suffering in this country is nearing the Great Depression for some communities, and
in significent decline. We're not much over
200 years old as a nation. If we don't recover the validity of the US Constitution, AND PROSECUTE those whose actions erode it - Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rumsfelt etc., we know who they are, the USA wont't be around in 150years. The US is NOT immune from becoming a defunct world power.
@GregH1961 Post-election (11/2010) depression, poor, poor us. It's surreal. Everyone thinks Sen. Joe McCarthy was a bad guy NOW."Commie witch hunts." But look, Michelle Bachmann from MN was re-elected to the House of Reps. She, who wants to investigate particular members of Congress - meaning those not of her beliefs- for "UnAmerican activities." I'm disallusioned, but not hopeless..........yet.
@tuadolcefanciulla You got it right there my friend..... I would dearly love to see Bush and Cheney brought before the world court. Our country is being stolen by greed and the endless pursuit of money. If people could only step back for a moment and consider what has real value.... Money or..... a sunset, our children, love, the earth, friendship, health..the list goes on and on and yet we are taught to value money.
Sorry to go off like this... your comment moved me.
brilliant. That jam is life changing. Oldie that very much describes today's economic climate.

I will be putting it up on my blogspot.
After this dog and pony show by both parties on the debt ceiling.
There is only one way.
DOWN.
The attack on the poor and the working class continues.
It is only called a struggle, if we fight back.

Great tune, and this version should only be listened to between sunset and sunrise.
I am continually amazed at how Dr. John, and Willie Nelson, continue to revisit and reinterpret the American Songbook.
RIP Odetta (who spanned several genres, and whom the music industry never really figured out what to do with).
