The real problem with Falwell is not that his interpretation the scripture was bigoted; there is ample biblical justification even in the new testament for abandoning your family in order to serve the faith, and loving your enemies, etc; all bad ideas, and when someone does see you sacrificing your son on a rock or scapegoating your sins onto Jesus, they will ridicule you-- and with good reason.
The real problem is that Christianity is just wrong. It is just absurd.
I find it interesting that people who are not able to produce even the most elementary contextual representation of Christianity are willing to label it as "wrong" and "absurd". This speaks volumes as to the level of argumentation and scholarship they are willing to take part in. If knocking over your own straw men helps you sleep at night then have at it.
