Could anyone tell me what the stories featuring Peter Davison are? I've seen The Visitation which I enjoyed and his final story The Caves of Androzani but I'm interested in seeing more.
@HerrWeinachten there's kinda, mawdryn undead, the five doctors, planet of fire, snakedance, terminus, earthshock, ressurection of the daleks and much more
@HerrWeinachten His first is Castrovalva, then Four to doomsday, thenKinda, then The Visitation, the Black orchid, then the famose Earthshock,Time-Flight,Arc of Infinity,Snakedance,Mawdry undead,Terminus,Enlightenment,The Kings Demons,The Five(Four)Doctors,Warriors of the DeepThe awakening,Frontios,Resurrection of the Daleks,Planet of Fire and finally Caves of Androzani.
Couldn't agree more with most of the comments, I'm old enough to remember this as broadcast. This sort of lightbox startfield animation beats CGI hands down, yes a lot of work goes into CGI too but to physically manipulate a rostrum camera towards transparences time after time to build up a multilayered effect such as this without knowing exactly what the finished thing will look like is incredible. Great theme too but I'd be hard pressed to choose between this and the original.
Remember watching my Uncle's old video tapes when I was a kid. This was the theme that made me want to get up and dance AND hide behind the sofa at the same time.
@animationdude56 it's way realistiv than today's titles, the starfield never date neither does this music, it's still very modern and stands very well to other versions in the eighties.
This theme is really great, but the middle 8 has me humming it all the time. It makes me imagine a hundred chancellory guards rescuing the doctor from sontarans or daleks. The middle 8 is the best part of the theme. The day they cut it out is the day they die.
The full versions do exist on Youtube, but during Broadcast, the BBC tends to cut it short. Besides shrinking the credits into the corner and drowning it out with advertising (maybe I just didn't hear it).
I feel bad reading all of the comments about the best Doctors, because I grew up watching the David Tennant era, so I only really know him. I've watched the new season with Matt Smith, the first remade season with Christopher Eccleston too, and a few of the Peter Davison ones, but all I really want is a gant box-set. I want to be able to watch every single episode. Because as @lacthewatcher1 said, every doctor has their own special quirk to bring to the show, and that's why we love it.
I like this theme better than the current one, the 2010 theme is awful I don't know how anyone who appreciates Doctor Who can like Murray Gold's 2010 mess, that 2007 one was just as bad.
don't think he's a patch on Derbyshire or Howell he is not!
@AlistairAI That's something else I never got. After three years of Davison, Colin Baker was a breath of fresh air to me. (And one of the few wise choises ever made by JNT.) I still don't understand why so many fans didn't like him. Granted, his costume was a disaster. But Colin brought back characteristics in the Doctor absent since the early days. He very much reminded me of Hartnell with a bit of Pertwee thrown in.
@zazozung Dont get me wrong liked Colin's Doctor, but he was an underated Doctor, i think the writers were trying to make him a bit darker and misunderstood. But it came off a bit ignorant, selfish and egotistical. An example of this would be in 'The Twin Dilema' his regeneration went through a strange phase. And brought on violent mood-swings towards his companian. In conclusion he was an underated Doctor and the writing was terrible. scripts were writen by John Nathan Turner.
I think I may have found the reason why i love this opening more than the other openings: The awesome sounds and how they echo makes it seem so deep, mystifying, and just plain awesome :D
0:40 to the end. What is that part technically called? I think I used to know, but I've forgotten. And why did they remove it from Matt's titles? They aren't the same without it. :(
@DrSeussThing1 They where in The Beast Below I think, but because they've been using different songs there hasn't been time for it in the credits of other episode
I'm an American so maybe my opinion about Doctor WHo means nothing, but i always kinda Thought Jon Pertwee was the best doctor. I guess i just felt that he embodied exactly what the doctor should be like. He's old and Wise, and he loves Humanity but won't take their crap.
Never the less this is the best theme, and all of the Doctor's were good in their own way, but i guess that's the whole point isn't it? :)
@lacthewatcher1 Your opinion is gold, and your description is lol'ish John pertwee has to be the best doctor mainly becuase he had the GOLD AGE of doctor who with UNIT, The Master (Roger DelGado) and Jo grant. RIP Jon :'(
@lacthewatcher1 (opinion, however i feel very strongly) The doctor isn't supposed to be old and cut off, he should be really spirited and have fun. David Tennant and Tom Baker, I believe, were the best.
@lacthewatcher1 Being a fan of Doctor Who and being a fan of mixed martial arts, I have to agree with you. Jon Pertwee was the best. Jon Pertwee had a big heart for humanity and he was not afraid to throw down if he needed to. Jon Pertwee was the Doctor Who that could whoop some ass.
Davidson was the first doctor i truly sat down and watched, therefore he remains one of my top 3. And he always will. Mccoy was interesting, even though i didn't expect to like him i just found him interesting to watch. And Tennant...seriously, who doesn't love tennant.
Those are my top 3, but i can't really put them in any specific preference order though.
Peter Davison is the best doctor and Arc of Infinity is my favorite story out of all 202
I have always wanted to meet him but I haven't got the chance. I want to get his costume but I haven't ever found the stuff for it( I'm American) I do have the tom baker scarf from his first six seasons
It was created using a piece of black card with some holes in it with a direct light source behind it, and some very clever rostrum camera work. The 'bursts' around certain stars were created with diffraction filters, and the Doctor's head was on a photographic transparency.
Davison was MY Doctor....the first one I really remembered & followed.I was around when Tom Baker played the part but couldn't really remember much about him....until I bought ALL the videos, then DVDs of the old series.
Dr Who suffered badly during the 80s with crappy scripts, poor time slots & JNTs ego all bringing it down.....I've never really warmed to Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy.
The new series up to now has hit the spot, with Eccleston & Tennant being 2 very good & worthy Doctors.
If you ever get the chance to play Bally Electronics' "Doctor Who" pinball game (1993), it uses a variation of this theme as a way of opening it. Since the first Doctor Who I liked was Peter Davison's, I must admit this was a better theme fit for me than the "usual" Dr. Who theme.
For me this was the era of Doctor Who at it's very best. Tom Baker,John Pertwee were extremely good, but here Doctor Who got the real 80's treatment,up to date theme music, etc. Peter Davison did better than I could have wished, and became my favourite Doctor of them all. Each to his/her own, but I have to say I find the movies rubbish and the latest offering "children's hour drivel" compared to the true science fiction Doctor Who is supposed to be. Even the companions were 10x better in 1986!
I don't know why either, but I actually prefer this theme over the newest one. Maybe because Peter's my favorite Doctor, but I like the music 40 seconds on :)
@lighthousedreamers: the music 40 seconds on is called "The Middle Eight". The current composer of Doctor Who, Murray Gold detests this part. He thinks it sounds like "Do They Know It's Christmas". Gold has no respect for the heritage of Doctor Who and I cannot stand him in the current show.
Lol. Thanks for the info; that's really interesting. 'The Middle Eight' is the best part of the theme, imho--it doesn't sound like the Christmas song :-S It's brilliant, and it's too late to do anything about it now! =D
He does compose good music, the 2006 and 2007/2008 themes were awesome and I like the 2010 one. But the howell theme is the best. Besides the Derbyshire theme.
i wish I had the chance to see more of Davison when I was younger. I somehow managed to miss most of his time on the show and looking back I really enjoy the episodes that I've seen. Tom Baker is still my favorite Doctor, but I really like Davison too.
I'm only a show fan since it came back, but i love this version of the tune the most. Might well have been on telly in the background when i was a wee toddler lol, subliminalness :)
I do like this theme, but i think its too publicised - in some of the early 2000s BBC audio recordings, they always used this theme, even if its an earlier doctor, e.g. Jon pertwee.
This has always been my favorite version of the theme. Transposing the key up from E minor to F-sharp minor and putting it somewhat uptempo with the new orchestration set a darker, more haunting atmosphere. It has a definite sci-fi eeriness and conveys action with a solid purpose.
did you have to ask for permission to upload this? i really whant to make my own custom title sequence using the Peter Davidson theme, but do i need permission to do so, if so how do i go about it?
I don't think it'll be an issue if you make your own. It's not like you're charging people for it. Why would the BBC get mad about it. Besides, lots of people have done it and the vids have been up for months/years, so go for it.

Awesome. When I saw the caves of androzani on the regeneration scene my jaw dropped and it brought a tear to my eye. Davison was the man for the job.

By far, my favorite of all the themes.

I think that it was more of the writers faults than the lead actors fault.
Sylvester McCoy could have been a gem if the writing was halfway decent.

Don't you mean Colin Baker?

I wish I could somehow get this on my iPOD, lol! :) That'd be cool.

If you ever get the chance to play Bally Electronics' "Doctor Who" pinball game (1993), it uses a variation of this theme as a way of opening it. Since the first Doctor Who I liked was Peter Davison's, I must admit this was a better theme fit for me than the "usual" Dr. Who theme.

This is definitely me favourite version of the theme, Colin Bakers and Chris Ecclestons are my joint second favourites.

These clean titles were actually used at the end of the one foot in the grave special star-
bound, with mr tambourine man played over them!!

Maybe because Peter's my favorite Doctor, but I like the music 40 seconds on :)
lighthousedreamers 3 years ago 37
@lighthousedreamers: the music 40 seconds on is called "The Middle Eight". The current composer of Doctor Who, Murray Gold detests this part. He thinks it sounds like "Do They Know It's Christmas". Gold has no respect for the heritage of Doctor Who and I cannot stand him in the current show.

Lol. Thanks for the info; that's really interesting. 'The Middle Eight' is the best part of the theme, imho--it doesn't sound like the Christmas song :-S It's brilliant, and it's too late to do anything about it now! =D

@SNK038
He does compose good music, the 2006 and 2007/2008 themes were awesome and I like the 2010 one. But the howell theme is the best. Besides the Derbyshire theme.

I have no idea why I like this theme the best for Doctor Who but it's done very well :D Thanks for sharing!

i wish I had the chance to see more of Davison when I was younger.

Jaybeebaby 3 years ago 7
I do like this theme, but i think its too publicised - in some of the early 2000s BBC audio recordings, they always used this theme, even if its an earlier doctor, e.g. Jon pertwee.
bjmorley 3 years ago
This has always been my favorite version of the theme. Transposing the key up from E minor to F-sharp minor and putting it somewhat uptempo with the new orchestration set a darker, more haunting atmosphere. It has a definite sci-fi eeriness and conveys action with a solid purpose.

URGENTLY NEEDED HELP:
did you have to ask for permission to upload this? i really whant to make my own custom title sequence using the Peter Davidson theme, but do i need permission to do so, if so how do i go about it?
IbiosnakeI 4 years ago
I don't think it'll be an issue if you make your own. It's not like you're charging people for it. Why would the BBC get mad about it. Besides, lots of people have done it and the vids have been up for months/years, so go for it.

Peter Davison was my favourite doctor and this version of the tune was the best.
