Jaco Pastorius - Bass Solo Montreal Jazz Festival 80

I remember BET Jazz played this concert a few times on their network back in the early days of cable. This was a good band.

Jaco was a genius...no doubting it..the greatest bass player of the 20th Century, and there will neveer be another one like him. Let's not forget..he was also a headcase. He never admitted he had problems with mental illness, alcohol and cocaine addiction. Said he was just 'acting the part'..felt it was expected of him. Never accepted help advanced by friends and loved ones. If it's true then shame on him..hoisted by his own patard. He had 4 kiddies..responsibilities..he abandoned them. Tragic.

The statement that John Entwhistle is a "way better bass player" is so inept as to be on the verge of retardation.

I am a Lifelong Bassist ( expert level ) which means I have a much higher level of understanding about all things Bass.

I can definitively state that John Entwhistle - while being a good player - isn't even half the GENIUS that Jaco was.

It is not even close.

A similar analogy to the statemtn above would be stating that my Ford Taurus is a better car then a Ferrari.

@hesellsmystuff How can you even compare them? They're such unique players. I'd bet that Jaco couldn't play a pounding rock line like Entwhistle, but Entwhistle couldn't solo over Donna Lee like Jaco does with ease. They're both so good in their own right.
