I don't think these guitars serve a purpose for anyone playing blues, rock, classical, metal...you name it.
What they would really be good for is guitarist who wants to do a synth pop band or psychedelia but doesn't want to use a keyboard. In other words, electronic music. Basic note and chord structures.
For everything else...they sound cool but rather silly and even annoying.
The "strings" come as standard with the instrument - they're low tension nylon and don't get replaced. The instrument is always in tune as the pitches are set by sensors under the fingerboard. The only adjustment that can be made is to the overall pitch of the instrument, i.e. tuning all the strings up or down by a semitone to an octave.
Best piece of DG-10 wizardy I've seen, EVER. Great stuff friend, now I gotta ask... WHERE did you find this archaic legend?! So glad to see some people, if just one, out there giving the DG-10 some well respected exposure.
Thanks. I've owned this guitar synth for about twenty years - a friend of mine worked in a music store and it came in as part of a part-ex deal. I bought it thinking it was little better than a toy, but the more I used it, the more I found it's a pretty unique instrument. Great fun to play - it's just a pity you can't bend strings on it.
@Kev3542 Small price to pay considering the age and innovation this instrument was borne from. I've looked at the Yamaha G10 but something about the Casio just speaks in volumes to me, magical even and I so wish I could find one. As for your realization from way back when about this being more than a toy, you were right, thinking decades beyond because it's so true.
I wouldn't have thought so - although I could be wrong. Maybe someone with a bit more electronics knowledge than I have could adapt it somehow. There's certainly no "left handed mode" switch on it.
You can't bend the strings on this instrument - the pitch is fixed, although you can adjust the overall tuning in terms of degrees above or below concert pitch. As for vibrato, the story is the same - vibrato is "built in" to the individual sounds, just like a mid-range keyboard.
Last but not least, this isn't actually a MIDI instrument - the DG-20 was MIDI compatible, but this is only a DG-10.
Very nice mate, especially the Funky Clav sound - its just like the keys off Stevie Wonder's Superstition :} and the Distortion ehmm... lol - Smoke on the water FTW anyway. All the others are great!
Thanks. It's a great device for messing about on - although I think it's more of novelty than a serious instrument. It feels a bit plasticky to play - i.e. plastic body, low tension nylon (plastic?) strings, etc.
No, there's no delay on this guitar synth. The delay on some guitar synths is caused by the amount of time the synth takes to trigger the sound. This Casio model has its sounds built in and is triggered immediately.
A friend of mine used to work in a music shop during the early 90s - whenever someone traded in an instrument that I might be interested in, he'd always give me a phone call. One day, this guitar came in - I think I paid about £30 for it (although it's a long time ago and I could be wrong).
At first I thought it was just a toy, but if you put it though some effects and plug it into an amp, it sounds pretty good.
Wow, this is the definition of epic. I like how you have that funky groove in your soul :)

Is this midi?

@interweboscar
I'm afraid not - the model up from this one (the DG-20) was though.

Brett from Flight Of The Conchords uses one of those!

Does it just plug into a standard amp?
whitbyjet65 11 months ago
@whitbyjet65
Yes, it plugs into a standard amp. The jack on the guitar synth itself is only a mini one, so I use an adapter at that end.

can you change tunings with this? like drop c?
hideki12345 1 year ago
@hideki12345
No, the tuning is just standard EADGBE, although you can adjust the pitch of the entire instrument up or down - i.e. FA#D#G#CF or even CFBbEbGC, etc.

@Kev3542
thank you for the quick reply! well as long as i can get down to C I think this thing is perfect for me :D
cheers

is it possible to bend the strings on this midi guitar and therefore control the pitch parameter just like a normal guitar? and vibrato?

Have you tried taking the back off and checking for bad connections?

@TheBeatlesfan1964
Thanks. The jacket is actually an Indesit fleece (don't ask!) - I covered up their logo with a "Back In The U.S.S.R" patch because
a) it was just the right size and
b) it's a great song.

Kev.. that's great that you can blow on that thing but get a keyboard if you want to do that!
Play the strat dude.... you are a superb guitar player. Put that thing away! :)
