Thx For posting this. I was friends with Tony. Real hip hop heads know that this was his productions. Only ignorant people will say it was naughty. Tony was responsible for a lot of music in the 90's. Miss u
No disrespect to the legend Tony D, but that beat isn't all that, just because NBN made a huge hit out of it doesn't make it great. He used a very common "substitution" beat and top 40 J5 schlock "ABC" yawn
He made so many better beats. One of my faves is Crusaders for real hip hop's-Kicked to the curb, I still don't know what he sampled on that but it's a dope classic!
Do I think it was a little shady that Naughty sampled Tony D's record and didn't give him any credit... yes but legally I don't think Tony had any legal merit to receive any money from it and that sucks. Case in point, don't put out break beat albums with "complete song concepts" with known-non-cleared samples in them if you don't want them sampled and used in other peoples songs. Don't get me wrong I LOVE TONY D's work (respect!) just trying to break it down legally. Peace~
I emailed Tony D about this on his soundclick page and he responded back saying "Yeah, they stole my shit". I agree that that Naughty probably sampled the record being that it was a "break beat album" that is made for sampling, so I really don't see the problem because Tony D didn't own the rights to The Jackson Five's music anyway. They just got the idea from Tony D's album that was made for sampling. Then of course Tommy Boy Records had to clear the sample (pay Motown I guess) to use it...
I can add some realness to the story cause I know mac g did get that SP-12 and he was a beast on that rz-1 and sk-5 he spent a many day in my basement using that shit... The cat did beats then that are being done right now!!!
umm hate to burst yall bubble.. but me an my cousin "mac - g" made this beat on a casio sk5 yall.. an we gave it to "Fats" the manager of "Tuff Crew" in exchange for a SP-12 drum machine.. but we were like 14 - 15 at the time an the sp - 12 was the shit so we thought we was gettin the best of the deal.. an jus in case yall wanna know how much sample time we had.. 5 seconds.. how did we do it?? thanks to the one technique turntable we had.. damn this bring back memories..
@azh1975 so what are you saying? you made the beat that was on Tony's record?? What was Tony's affiliation with Tuff Crew? Can you submit more evidence than this story?
@djspair my bad takin so long to get back but yep made the beat in my basement. right after a bowl of apple jacks, an by accident no doubt. If you listern the loop is catching the bass-line..an the link between them is tuff crews manager at the time "FATS" he was a promoter/manager an we was doing incredible stuff wit limited equipment plus it helped that my partner was Mac G, "FATS" nephew.. we jus wanted to make songs an hear ourselves on boom boxes an rap a neighborhood parties..

Song was call'd "Attackin' The Airwaves"...a memba of group was on run from bounty hunters, so fled to VA, 'n hook'd up wit' Teddy. He eventually got caught
@azh1975 (con't)...'n they ransack'd his room, 'n snatch'd the tape (mind U, Teddy call'd us a month or two before hand 'bout the track, 'n never knew what the original sample was at the time)! We met Akil from Wreckx 'N Effects a few years later at an autograph signing at Tower Records in Manhattan...once we told him the story, 'n some other info only a few other people knew 'bout the song that they were originally supposed to do wit' it, Teddy shut down the event, 'n left!!! LOL...
@only4mal Did you read the video description? I clearly stated that Naughty By Nature sampled "Adams Nightmare" for O.P.P. Rumors had it that Tony even took them to court but lost based on the fact it was not his original work. Yes we all know both sampled the "Jackson 5 ABC". Fact remains that Tony's concept was ripped off.
@djspair I remember him having that SP-12 cause he did TL back to yell on it and brought it to my house on Hollywood street many times so I think your story is legit and got a free copy of that beat tape tony d had it on from Fats
@only4mal WHATZ GOIN ON HERE IS ON THIS TONY D ALBUM the "SUBSTITUTION" were put under the J5 & somewhere on the cover (of Tony D's record) it says : "SAMPLE THIS" ..... Naughty (KayGee) put the same 2 samples 2gether and added some Dave B. Keys

Sucks becuase that dumb looking fuck ripped it off the jackson 5 song I want you back which is actually a smoky davis original. Music is nothing more than one big sampling orgy. Know your shit before you post some stupid shit like this
@AZILLIONRECORDS Thanks for scoop. I'm laughing with you because yes, those two samples are very obvious however back then "Substitution" maybe not that much. Jackson 5 yes indeed and if you read some of my responses of course I am aware that it was the CONCEPT that was stolen. Must I be shamed for sharing this information in layman's terms? I just wanted to share some history that's all.
we gotta spread the knowledge but it's gotta be right & exact : for example : synthetic substitution was JUST AS POPULAR DURING THIS TIME AS impeach & funky drummer TRUST !! Dude . i wonder how much money Tony D got from all this Artists who sampled from him. All cases were settled out of court. aha. interessting. also who worked with him. I must admit that i´ve never heard of the dude before though. thnx for clearing that out.
well to answer part of ya question .. as far as OPP goes , Tony d couldn't get any money from naughty By nature because he didn't clear the original J5 himself anyway.. he did tell me that he got an undisclosed amount from Dj eddie c/o Heavy d & supercat for infringement on a beat he did for PRT
Great info. I was wondering what the Heavy D lawsuit was all about. I have that remix record of DEM NO Worry We where they jacked Shykilah. You know the original sample was from Maynard Ferguson, but the sample is kinda buried in the song, which even till this day would be hard to catch.
Tony D worked with: YZ, Poor Righteous Teachers, King Sun, The Outsiddaz, Ebony Vibe Everlasting,Scot Lark da Sensei, Blaque Sperm, Da hillbillies, The Funk Family, Mark Rae and Christian, Almighty and KD Ranks, Blvd Mossee, Oran Juice Jones, Mary Wilson, Shawn Lov, Rahzii Hi Power, Veba & so many more I cant think of at the moment.
