It wasn't that bad really. any true fan would appreciate their attempt at trying to have at it again, god knows how much we crave a zeppelin gig nowadays even if its not perfect. its not their best but we all know no band of this decade can compete, much less surpass.
This is fucking HORRIBLE!!!!!!! Do you people have ears???? I was laughing my ass off thinking this was a 'shreds' video, cuz the solos are fucking AWFUL!!!!! And then when I found out this was for real, I wanted to die!!! REALLY!!!! This is our beloved Jimmy Page????? UGH!!!!!!
as bad as this is, at least Plant admitted years later that their few reunions after Zep's '80 break-up were terrible. I'm glad they came back in 2007 to make it right! I'm just glad Zep didn't hit this kind of low while they were actually still together. the music sounds like a bad karaoke track.
plant had vocal problems for awhile. every singer has it happen to them just after they turn 40 or in their 40's and others deal with it differently. the voice comes back toward the mid to late 40's or even the early 50's. Check out Plant in Moscow in 2002 singing Rock'n Roll. He sounds like he did waaaay back, its scary man.
Don't know why this 88 reunion sounds so bad I think it's because the sound tech and mixing is so bad or maybe Zep were a bit drunk and the show unrehearsed. The drums sound awful comparing to those from O2 or Coverdale Page tour. I mean the sound not the beating. Got nothing on Jason;) Though Page with John Myles was fucking great on the 88 tour I've heard a lot of boots from it.
Pt 2-The band looked back, and Jason, his first gig filling in for dad, was fuc*kin Frozen, staring at the nebula's deep beauty. Plant picked it up, and ran back to him and shook him C'Mon C'mon ! Jason snapped out of it, and began those drums- Been along time since ... Looking for that video ! I also remember Plant FORGOT the words to stairway and new yorkers wanted to kill him.
Ok, I was there, performed. Phil was Red hot then, but everyone was about the first Zep reunion in 10yrs. It was the 2nd ever pay per view thing. They did the 6 hour show as a rehearsal, minus Zep, then 1 hour break, then did the whole show again for camera's, 50 million viewers. So I was exactly side stage when Zep was about to emerge. The curtain was coming up, Plant ran out and everybody went nuts. Pt 1
@JimmyPage360 Yea , I hadnt seen this till now....but fuck me that heartbraker solo was like a beginner guitar player who knows no scales...just fucking about. Im glad we have DVD's and bootlegs to see the real Jimmy.....if kids saw this they would think Page was shit and not the rock god he truely is!
Well, not the best performance from this fantastic band, the O2 concert in 2007 was much better than this. But the new riff of Whole Lotta Love at 3:08 i sooo cool.
Page was probably drunk that night and still suffering from his heroin addiction. Heroin can really fuck you up, and Page is a great example of amazing talent gone down hill from drugs. When Page is sober however, he beats Hendrix.
This is my favorite riff of all...the way he changed the riff is fucking genious!!! l saw this long time ago....me and my friend had a dream to have a rock band, and we're crazy about Led.. the greatest band of all times!
The television/broadcast sound mix was horrible. I remember seeing this live when it aired in '88. I also have it on VHS tape. Beyond the terrible mix, I couldn't figure out why Jimmy's guitar was so "dead"... it's like the Gain knob on his amp was on zero. The strings were simply...dead. He should have had a huge sound like on Coverdale/Page. Man, the single notes just die the moment he plucks the string - I don't think they even switched him to "solo" channel.
'They'? This sounded like a raw setup to me. Roadies generally aren't responsible for switching sounds, guitarists usually prefer to modulate between clean and distorted settings. Page had been going with quieter tones on stage as the years went on (youtube their MTV special No Quarter, or listen to Page live with the Black Crowes, the Heartbreaker solo sounds just as awful).
The drum sound was terrible at this concert. Sounds like he's hitting cardboard boxes. But you have to remember sound quality has come a long way since 1988.
They all are better in these days... Robert Plant, even with 60 on his back is much better singer now that in the 80s.... I don't know what was wrong with all of zep's but... this is realy bad played, the sond is not helping, but still bad played
the drums dnt sound too bad 2 me... u kno robert, he sings WAY off beat live so if the drummer which i thnk is still john played completly on it would make the song sound horrible.
Hmmm...marginally better than Live Aid (could it be any worse?) but still dismal...Jesus,could they no afford a decent PA? JPs coke addled brain telling him he can still play stuff he could only just pull of 20 years ago (always thought the guitar break in Heartbreaker was minging) and frankly, give me Phil Collins anyday cos Jason Bonham is pretty lame IMHO...like i say, dismal...
WHAT THE FUCK!! They fucked Jimmy here big time, what the hell is with the sound on that guitar. It makes him sound like a old washed up nothing. He was actually good in 88'. This pisses me off
i heard someone say that after john bonham jason bonham is best.and i told them it is wrong.there might be no one who can win jhon bonham but there is atleast a million who could win jason bonham
I think there might have been something wrong with the pickups on the guitar or with one or two of the strings or something because from the looks of it, he's playing fine, and he was doing the Outrider tour that same year and playing just great.
When hes doing the pulloffs at 2:23,, its like he isnt even making enough contact to sound the notes. Its not a flattering guitar sound...but it IS crappy playing...its almost like he has webbed fingers.
People love Page and made him a millionaire, that's all that matters.
Fact is though, he could suck - and suck hard. When you've got a loud amp behind you and a lot of annoying lights in your face, that can happen...
As for this video; the most frustrating thing for me is the drum sound. Jason Bonham is more than a good enough drummer for the job, but WTF IS WITH THE TIN CANS he's using?
Is Page plugged into the correct rig? I think he drank Jason Bonham's weight in vodka before scribbling all that crap that night... or maybe I'm picky.
Maybe the fucker who was supposed to setup his rig properly fucked the whole thing up. It isn't Page's job to setup his own equipment...the stagehands do that. I bet that asshole was killed after this show.
God Led Zeppelin fnas defend Jimmy to the hilt don't they. Page was fucking shit here, much as he was fucking shit from 1972 onwards. He didn't give a fuck about you, or any other Zeppelin fan as long as he could drink, inject and fuck groupies as much as he could. His playing during the solo is fucking dire, and there is no way the equipment could be "accidentally set up" like that, he chose the wrong gear when he bought it. His problem not the sound engineer.
Maybe the problem is that your ears are filled with SHIT, huh? Go clean them out and learn something about guitar playing and gear before you run off at the mouth like that.
My ears are not filled with shit, I haven't listened to enough Zeppelin bootlegs to begin to tllerate the sloppy junky playing of Page and co. I know a lot about guitar gear, enough to say that Jimmy Page might have a very nice 1959 Les Paul, but if he puts gauge 8 strings on it it will not sustain. He should use gauge 10 strings and he should get a shorter strap, as whilst it may look cool to have your guitar down by your knees, you just cannot play with any accuracy down there.
See, here we go...First off, 8's on a shit guitar might mean zero sustain. 8's on a '59 Les Paul, which has one of the best sustains of any guitar ever made, is just fine. He uses a light guage because it makes string bending a whole helluva lot easier and that's something he did pretty much his entire career. The long strap is the same deal...Page always did that.
Page was not at his best during this period, but his gear was clearly screwed up this night...there's no question about it.
Was his gear also screwed up frm 1973 to 1980 as well? What about at Knebworth, was it screwed up? Hiwatt amps never worked for him. Mick Ronson of the Ziggy Stardust band used a Les Paul and made it sound really good.
You obviously don't have a clue what it is you're talking about it. Page didn't use a Hiwatt after '71 and when he did, it was his custom made one that was used during the Royal Albert Hall which totally rocked. Strike one. From 73 to 80, he used his classic Marshall/LP setup that's the classic tone that most fans know him for. Strike two. Knebworth is regarded as a fan favorite amongst bootleg traders. Strike three...YOU'RE OUT!
When you clearly watch how hard he's slamming those strings during the solo and the pathetic sound that comes out, you ought to know that it's an equipment failure. He even had to quit half way through the ascension up the neck because of the zero sustain and that was a classic move he did during the Heartbreaker solo since they first started playing it back in '69-'70...8's, low strap, and all. If anyone doesn't recognize the equipment failure, they either don't know shit or they're hating.
Ok wise guy define exactly where the equipment failure is, and what it comprises. How do you kill sustain? Dodgy valves? Hell, did they not do a soundcheck for the gig? Page had no problem with that sound, or else he would have played something else during the solo. Maybe 2% of the problem is the close microphone placement on the cabs for the TV feed, which kills all the room ambience, which is important for a solo spot like this.
It could be any number of things...something as simple as a bad cable somewhere in the chain..
who knows? I wasn't there, but equipment failure is CLEARLY obvious. That much, anyone with any knowledge on this subject and not a Zeppelin/Page hater would note.
Also, Zeppelin wasn't the only act performing that night by far, so it's not like they could even test the rig very well before starting. That's VERY important to remember.
One thing is for certain, close mic'ing has zero to do with this. The problem is occuring live, so it's clearly not in the recording chain. Close mic'ing is what they always do anyway...that's normal.
Well Led Zeppelin fans have a sort of blindness that means the band could go onstage and read out a phone book and they would think it was the best thing ever. A band that tours these days are disciplined guys who probably go to the gym etc... to play decent shows the crowd deserve. Once Zeppelin became famous they were sloppy as fuck, because they knew they could play like shit and people would still fill out Madison Square Gardens every night of the week to see them.
No more time to wasted on this. There's no point in arguing with clueless haters that basically just spew out bullshit just to get Page fans riled up. Fuck it. Page rocks and world knows it. No apologies or explanations necessary.
are you familiar with the name Robert Godwin? He's written a few books on Led Zep bootlegs, etc.......you should hear the stories he tells about why this gig didn't sound right in person AND over HBO's cable feed....you'd probably shake your head in disbelief...and Rob knows everybody when it comes to Led Zep, Plant, Page, etc......so it's no BS....
I haven't read anything Godwin had to say about this show, but I already knew the gig didn't sound right, so I wouldn't shake my head in disbelief. It was a bad night all around. Very little rehearsal time, they had waited hours to go on and by the time they did, they were already absolutely exhausted, the equipment failure screwed up Page's tone and sustain... Amazingly, they still somewhat pulled it off. It's still a cool show to watch even if it's not a superior showing.
It wasn't an 'equipment failure'. Page was rumoured to be drunk that night, and the lack of sustain was on his part. It would have been as simple as going back to where the amplifier stack was (which you can clearly see in the video) and making an adjustment during playing.
Page either didn't care and/or had it set up the way it sounded ahead of time. There is not enough distortion saturation in that sound to carry the notes the way Page wanted to play them. Page failed, not his equip.
FUCK YOU bitch!! you're nothing, while Page is and will be remembered forever! He made more of his life in one inch of nail than you will ever made in 10 million years with your whole body bitch! '88 he wasnt young and hungry, after so many tours, drugs, sex, whiskey and rock, do u really expect he'd play like did back in the early 70's,??This is a tribute to the fans and they didnt played together for a long time.even tho l loved the new improved riff.If you dont like it go to hell!!

Priole2000 2 years ago
My ears are not filled with shit, I haven't listened to enough Zeppelin bootlegs to begin to tllerate the sloppy junky playing of Page and co. I know a lot about guitar gear, enough to say that Jimmy Page might have a very nice 1959 Les Paul, but if he puts gauge 8 strings on it it will not sustain. He should use gauge 10 strings and he should get a shorter strap, as whilst it may look cool to have your guitar down by your knees, you just cannot play with any accuracy down there.
VDGG94ki 2 years ago
See, here we go...First off, 8's on a shit guitar might mean zero sustain. 8's on a '59 Les Paul, which has one of the best sustains of any guitar ever made, is just fine. He uses a light guage because it makes string bending a whole helluva lot easier and that's something he did pretty much his entire career. The long strap is the same deal...Page always did that.
Page was not at his best during this period, but his gear was clearly screwed up this night...there's no question about it.
Priole2000 2 years ago
Was his gear also screwed up frm 1973 to 1980 as well? What about at Knebworth, was it screwed up? Hiwatt amps never worked for him. Mick Ronson of the Ziggy Stardust band used a Les Paul and made it sound really good.
VDGG94ki 2 years ago
You obviously don't have a clue what it is you're talking about it. Page didn't use a Hiwatt after '71 and when he did, it was his custom made one that was used during the Royal Albert Hall which totally rocked. Strike one. From 73 to 80, he used his classic Marshall/LP setup that's the classic tone that most fans know him for. Strike two. Knebworth is regarded as a fan favorite amongst bootleg traders. Strike three...YOU'RE OUT!

you sure know your shit when it comes to zep....kudos!

Dont defend Knebworth That was a lousy performance also. Plant and Page even said that themselves.

8 gauge strings his entire career? No wonder he has no finger strength.

Priole2000 2 years ago
Ok wise guy define exactly where the equipment failure is, and what it comprises. How do you kill sustain? Dodgy valves? Hell, did they not do a soundcheck for the gig? Page had no problem with that sound, or else he would have played something else during the solo. Maybe 2% of the problem is the close microphone placement on the cabs for the TV feed, which kills all the room ambience, which is important for a solo spot like this.
VDGG94ki 2 years ago
It could be any number of things...something as simple as a bad cable somewhere in the chain..
who knows? I wasn't there, but equipment failure is CLEARLY obvious. That much, anyone with any knowledge on this subject and not a Zeppelin/Page hater would note.
Also, Zeppelin wasn't the only act performing that night by far, so it's not like they could even test the rig very well before starting. That's VERY important to remember.
Priole2000 2 years ago
It's a poor carpenter who blames his tools. The playing was awful, equipment failure or not.
Mattbro 2 years ago
One thing is for certain, close mic'ing has zero to do with this. The problem is occuring live, so it's clearly not in the recording chain. Close mic'ing is what they always do anyway...that's normal.
Priole2000 2 years ago
True, but TV feeds can sound like poor quality soundboard bootlegs, which I think is the problem in this case.
VDGG94ki 2 years ago
i didnt even look what you're arguing about, just wandering how much time you waste doing it.
RolsRois 2 years ago
Well Led Zeppelin fans have a sort of blindness that means the band could go onstage and read out a phone book and they would think it was the best thing ever. A band that tours these days are disciplined guys who probably go to the gym etc... to play decent shows the crowd deserve. Once Zeppelin became famous they were sloppy as fuck, because they knew they could play like shit and people would still fill out Madison Square Gardens every night of the week to see them.
VDGG94ki 2 years ago
i think that reading of the phone book wont last long as a song on stage :D but yeah, page had some mistakes on stage no big deal.
RolsRois 2 years ago
No more time to wasted on this. There's no point in arguing with clueless haters that basically just spew out bullshit just to get Page fans riled up. Fuck it. Page rocks and world knows it. No apologies or explanations necessary.

are you familiar with the name Robert Godwin? He's written a few books on Led Zep bootlegs, etc.......you should hear the stories he tells about why this gig didn't sound right in person AND over HBO's cable feed....you'd probably shake your head in disbelief...and Rob knows everybody when it comes to Led Zep, Plant, Page, etc......so it's no BS....
bricin1982 2 years ago
I haven't read anything Godwin had to say about this show, but I already knew the gig didn't sound right, so I wouldn't shake my head in disbelief. It was a bad night all around. Very little rehearsal time, they had waited hours to go on and by the time they did, they were already absolutely exhausted, the equipment failure screwed up Page's tone and sustain... Amazingly, they still somewhat pulled it off. It's still a cool show to watch even if it's not a superior showing.
Priole2000 2 years ago
