It is true that Singlish is unique. But it is saddening that in this video, it has been warped and exaggerated to a degree which does not correspond to its usual form. This is simply an auntie who is not in the least proficient in English. Many Singaporeans can speak proper English. Its a choice that's all.
Although we may not speak 100% English...singlish makes us unique and natural..anyone who isn't Singaporean that says singlish will sound awkward. Only WE can say it naturally:) singaporeans Si bei pro la!!
hahahahaha! So funny! SINGLISH ROCKS!!!!!!! Even though singlish isn't proper english, it makes people laugh like crazy. So why not say singlish rather than english. why not?
This so damn funny. Hey, but at least, she tried to speak English. Its much better compared to some fellow Malaysian who avoided to speak English whenever they have to. Good job auntie!

@sholadare we do not think that our English is the best,we know where we stand....don't accuse us!!!although our English is not the best but at least we speak proper english when needed!!!
HAHA, Singaporean's Singlish can be really funny. I'm not disgusted to be a Singaporean who speaks Singlish, cos everyone I know goes that. Even my parents say singlish. Actually, some singlish words come from hokkien. Like 'Walao' and 'KNS'
For all those who are out there and think this video is about Singlish/Manglish: It is full of SEXUAL CONNOTATIONS! Francisboey, you should take a bucket of water and pour it over yourself: you stink and you are dirty! The auntie has no clue what you are USING her for! As you know, we have a saying in our part of the world: Kurang ajar, man!
I have to admit that it's funny and I'm guilty of speaking like that, but as a Singaporean, the horrible grammar sometimes disgusts me. And there's so many Singaporeans that speak Singlish. I'm not saying that I'm ashamed of this, but we should know when to use English appropriately, otherwise, people with a perfect command of the English language are going to go, "what the fuck are you saying?" even if it's still considered English.
@viola128 LOL. And I'm sorry but I cannot help but laugh at yours too. I mean who are you to agree when yours sucks too? I could tell instantly that you were Singaporean, kid.
@viola128 most of us write comment in a casual way and it's hard to avoid mistakes. Who will proof read it before posting? Anyway, it's hard to get rid of singlish. I left years ago and still have singlish in me. In fact, my lawyer in SG who is probably the smartest person I've ever met speaks Singlish as well. The point is some of us made mistakes because of carelessness but Singlish is almost intentional. Is when I hear "don't be like that lah..."..(I prbably still say that..)
@AuraSlicer emm...not so perfect english either....
Thank you! it's alright, should just leave the cake alone. There are people who just need to attack others!! Anyway, i already remove that comment, this should not continue. I am singaporean, (did i say that I am not??),and proud to be one. I was in chinese sch all my life till i left sg Went abroad but miss home a lot! Anyway, my english is not as good as my chinese but am willing to learn. thx Aura!
it's not an accent, the grammar is basically different. you can raise your singlish flag high above your head in singapore but when you get out of the country, good luck :P
@MrMarcocaofanhua your english doesnt make you sound bright either, mind you most of the citizens are effective bilingual due our education in teaching English as first language and our own mother tongue as second. The national language is English, Chinese, malay and indian. That does not include countless dialects still spoken. Thats how Singlish comes about, from the diversity of different languages n cultures
I don't care much about those different accents. It's just okay as far as we can understand each other. Everyone has a unique accent, right? Bye the way, many S'poreans were originally from poor parts of China, Malaysia or India etc, they tried their best to learn English. It's them who made S'pore an international city. What do u expect, and what about u?
Human rights violations in Singapore cannot be overlooked. Everything else pales in comparison, especially with the continued blatant barbaric court sentences of flogging men. This outrageous physical abuse of the human body must not be a part of any modern and civilised society, and this issue will not go away and cannot be ignored. This government must stop this appalling behaviour for it is shameful and is an embarassment to Singapore.
@sandye2100 what has this got to do with the singlish video? anyway i think your argument is unfounded. are you singaporean? caning in singapore is necessary. btw there's a difference between flogging and caning (look up the dictionary).
@whiskey4409 I meant exactly what I said. Flogging is prohibited in almost every nation on this earth, so Singapore stands with other third world places and terrorist countries that continue these savage acts of TORTURE. and human rights violations.
I don't care whether you call it Beating, Whipping, Caning, Flogging-- IT IS SADISTIC CRUELTY AND BARBARIC VIOLENCE AGAINST HUMAN BEINGS!!
@sandye2100 where are you from? singapore is one of the safest countries in the world. if you (i don't mean you as in you personally but just figuratively) don't break the law, i don't see why caning is a violation of human rights. let's say someone commits armed robbery and is sentenced to caning. is that a violation of the armed robber's human rights? what about the rights of the person who got robbed? all these arguments against caning and whatever else are mostly one sided.
@whiskey4409 If I told you I was Singaporean would that be a "SAFE" thing to day considering my comments?
I do not support any government that practices this type of abuse. It does NOT matter where I am from, and I do not care where You are from. Believe all the government propaganda you wish that Singapore is one of the safest places in the world--that never will justify physical assault torturing human beings. YES caning, stoning, waterboarding, burning, mutilation=human rights violations.
@whiskey4409 Singapore's unjust judicial system where judges in a places like Singapore court order men to be brutally whipped by deranged sadistic prison officials because of immigration offences and other crimes where no violence took place is barbaric. It's sick that the government indoctrinates citizens into believing these type of violent practices are "normal." All Human beings -innocent-and those that have broken man-made laws should not be TORTURED
@sandye2100 haha by you saying that if it would or would not be a 'safe' thing tells me where you are from. but i do agree with you on that point, that it doesn't matter where you are from. one thing for sure though, you proved my point, which is that your argument is one-sided, by totally ignoring my example of the armed robber. either you missed it, or you chose to ignore it knowing that i pushed the right button.
@whiskey4409 I will repeat for you: "All Human beings - Innocent - and those that have broken man-made laws should not be TORTURED." I ignored nothing, now you may see again that I have answered you, but you did not like my answer. It does NOT matter the crime --a person is still a human being and should not be abused in this manner. Now let us see if you will answer----"Do you condone TORTURING human beings?"
@sandye2100 ah, i did not view your last sentence as a reply to the example i gave, but its ok. its not that i don't like your answer, it's just that i do not view caning as torture. it is a punishment for crime(s) committed. when parents cane their children, is it considered torture (this is a rhetorical question)? if someone is caned unjustly, let's say for a crime he did not commit, or is in fact totally innocent, then perhaps you could classify it as torture.
@whiskey4409 but then again it wouldn't be torture. because the purpose of the caning is to punish, not to torture. innocent people shouldn't be caned. convicted criminals, thats another matter. oh well. this is getting hard to explain. i think you get my point. for the record, i know where you're coming from, i guess we have differing opinions thats all. i hope we can agree to disagree.
@whiskey4409 I understand your views completely as singaporeans are brought up to believe that physical cruelty is ok. I am not speaking about children although I am against beating anyone at any age. I speak about the injustice against men and the legalized brutality within the judicial system. This violence was used on slaves used in medieval times and terrorists still use it. This is outrageous third world and barbaric and outlawed through most of the world today.
@sandye2100 i'm glad you understand my views, i understand yours too. this has been a fruitful discussion of the subject over youtube, and this will be my final post on the subject. have a good day.
@sandye2100 but even then, torture is used to extract information/confessions. after caning are the convicts questioned? no. a doctor is present to ensure that the convict is ready to take the next stroke of the cane. in torture chambers are there doctors present? i've never been in one but i'm pretty sure there aren't any doctors inside. the caning is a punishment, reserved for certain crimes, i'm not sure of what crimes though, check wikipedia, i'll check wikipedia too.
@whiskey4409 When a nude man has been stripped and tied up and his flesh deliberately beaten bloody over and over again and mutilated and scarred--he has been TORTURED--And it has nothing to do with extracting anything to do with a confession. The rest of the world knows this and so do human rights groups and this is prohibited by the United Nations. Any doctor present at any of these barbaric rituals should never be allowed to practice medicine again for they are criminals. Very sadistic
@sandye2100 now, i shall answer your question: i do not condone torturing human beings. but i do ask that you refer to my previous two posts in order the gain some background information about my answer. if you do not wish to, it's okay, i shall reiterate. in my view, caning is not torture, it is a punishment.
I don't mind the funny accent, everyone have their's, but please don't be proud of it... you arrogant Sons.O.Bitches!!! Mr. Lee Kuan Yew's my hero, The government and the officials there are great but it's the commoners that sickens me, thinking they have to be credited for what singapore has become today. Thank Mr. Lee!!! and be humble when you see the Thais, Pinoys, Indoes, becasue their ancestors earns respects from their invaders!!! we fought for it, we been through shit more than you MOFOs!
NewRoad40:Thai ppl. admire singapore why?? Thailand is Pride of Asia, S'pore is Shame of Asia. Thai has great tradition, history, culture and beautiful language.Thai has been INDEPENDENT and FREEDOM and Tolerance for minority like gay ppl. Thai ppl. can protest against government bravely. S'porean has nothing. They were obedient and unmanly dog of british racist long years and now of LKY dictater. yes, they speak singlish, becauce his master ordered it, only for money and business!
I don't see what is wrong with Singlish. Most Americans speak only one language. I am American but I speak English and Portuguese. Singlish is a dialect of English!
@skyoflove96 im sorry that i laughed at those who cannot speak english fluently, even though it can be funny at times. on behalf of 230 people that liked this video because it's funny, and they laughed, i sincerely apologise. if this isn't enough, sue me please. also, please teach me how to live. please tell me what i can laugh at and what i cannot laugh at.
@domk00 no i am not a comedian, nor am i trying to be funny. but i do have a feeling that you are trying to be funny, but you're not. so stop trying; your efforts are futile.
@domk00 thanks assface. in case you didn't know, or too stupid to realise, i meant to spell cock as 'cawk', and also, your attept to diss me is too indirect to work well. now go fuck yourself, faggot.
The blue collars and hawkers in Singapore have little formal education. They xommunicate mostly in dialects and Mandarin. However, at least they tried to merge with the larger society by trying to learn to speak English, resulting in Singlish. This is how some of our higher mortals here repay them: by making fun of their effort in overcoming a language barrier.
I am amazed at people who can turn on and off their singlish feature in their conversation. Don't underestimate them! but it's unfortunate for those who can't turn it off. I've seen a lot in here.
I don't use singlish often actually. 'cause in exams and orals we cannot use SINGLISH! The education system in Singapore is very good so stop saying that Singaporeans' english are bad. We can speak both Singlish and English!
@alwaysloveshinee I disagree with you saying that the education system we have is good. Apart from that, I wholeheartedly agree with you.
The funny thing is, most people have little "additions" to their variations of English as well. i.e. The "like" spam in casual American English, shortening of sentences (e.g. "Are you coming over later?" to "You coming over?"), and certain phrases only "native" speakers of said variations would be able to understand. Singlish is just one of these variations.
Only for British people, it is that true English can be spoken.
As for British people, Americans' speaking also denies Australians' speaking.
The inside of the world does not need to be Britain.

It does NOT matter the crime --a person is still a human being and should not be abused in this manner. Now let us see if you will answer----"Do you condone TORTURING human beings?"
sandye2100 11 months ago
@sandye2100 ah, i did not view your last sentence as a reply to the example i gave, but its ok. its not that i don't like your answer, it's just that i do not view caning as torture. it is a punishment for crime(s) committed. when parents cane their children, is it considered torture (this is a rhetorical question)? if someone is caned unjustly, let's say for a crime he did not commit, or is in fact totally innocent, then perhaps you could classify it as torture.
whiskey4409 11 months ago
@whiskey4409 but then again it wouldn't be torture. because the purpose of the caning is to punish, not to torture. innocent people shouldn't be caned. convicted criminals, thats another matter. oh well. this is getting hard to explain. i think you get my point. for the record, i know where you're coming from, i guess we have differing opinions thats all. i hope we can agree to disagree.
whiskey4409 11 months ago
@whiskey4409 I understand your views completely as singaporeans are brought up to believe that physical cruelty is ok. I am not speaking about children although I am against beating anyone at any age. I speak about the injustice against men and the legalized brutality within the judicial system. This violence was used on slaves used in medieval times and terrorists still use it. This is outrageous third world and barbaric and outlawed through most of the world today.
sandye2100 11 months ago
@sandye2100 i'm glad you understand my views, i understand yours too. this has been a fruitful discussion of the subject over youtube, and this will be my final post on the subject. have a good day.
whiskey4409 11 months ago
@sandye2100 but even then, torture is used to extract information/confessions. after caning are the convicts questioned? no. a doctor is present to ensure that the convict is ready to take the next stroke of the cane. in torture chambers are there doctors present? i've never been in one but i'm pretty sure there aren't any doctors inside. the caning is a punishment, reserved for certain crimes, i'm not sure of what crimes though, check wikipedia, i'll check wikipedia too.
whiskey4409 11 months ago
@whiskey4409 When a nude man has been stripped and tied up and his flesh deliberately beaten bloody over and over again and mutilated and scarred--he has been TORTURED--And it has nothing to do with extracting anything to do with a confession. The rest of the world knows this and so do human rights groups and this is prohibited by the United Nations. Any doctor present at any of these barbaric rituals should never be allowed to practice medicine again for they are criminals. Very sadistic
sandye2100 11 months ago
@sandye2100 now, i shall answer your question: i do not condone torturing human beings. but i do ask that you refer to my previous two posts in order the gain some background information about my answer. if you do not wish to, it's okay, i shall reiterate. in my view, caning is not torture, it is a punishment.

I don't see what is wrong with Singlish. Most Americans speak only one language. I am American but I speak English and Portuguese. Singlish is a dialect of English!

I don't use singlish often actually. 'cause in exams and orals we cannot use SINGLISH! The education system in Singapore is very good so stop saying that Singaporeans' english are bad. We can speak both Singlish and English!
alwaysloveshinee 1 year ago
@alwaysloveshinee I disagree with you saying that the education system we have is good. Apart from that, I wholeheartedly agree with you.
The funny thing is, most people have little "additions" to their variations of English as well. i.e. The "like" spam in casual American English, shortening of sentences (e.g. "Are you coming over later?" to "You coming over?"), and certain phrases only "native" speakers of said variations would be able to understand. Singlish is just one of these variations.
