But that's not to say religious extremism is always good. I'm an atheist and I do agree that flying planes into buildings is a horrible form of extremism, but I just find that this is sort of a faulty discussion when people go on about "but this is extremism!" because you need to provide a proof that extremism is unequivocally undesirable in order to use it as a slight against any doctrine.
Also what they don't mention is that extremism is not necessarily a bad thing. If they say it necessarily is, that's a roundabout version of the golden mean, which is a logical fallacy. The fact is that certain extremist viewpoints can be correct. I mean it's certainly an extreme end of the spectrum to promote international peace and complete disarmament, but I think most agree that, whether it's idealist or not, that's a good goal to work towards.

Books like the Bible, Quran, etc can always be interpreted differently, so some people can use religion as an excuse to justify violence and hate.

So, instead of interpreting it this way and changing what it says in order to justify murder, genocide etc, you interpret it the other way, changing what it says, but now no longer keeping the murder justification part.
Yes, sure, you are allowed to do that, but doesn't that mean that you yourself have the ability to apply a moral law in scripture, changing the meaning whenever necessary?

But that's not to say religious extremism is always good. I'm an atheist and I do agree that flying planes into buildings is a horrible form of extremism, but I just find that this is sort of a faulty discussion when people go on about "but this is extremism!" because you need to provide a proof that extremism is unequivocally undesirable in order to use it as a slight against any doctrine.

Also what they don't mention is that extremism is not necessarily a bad thing. If they say it necessarily is, that's a roundabout version of the golden mean, which is a logical fallacy. The fact is that certain extremist viewpoints can be correct. I mean it's certainly an extreme end of the spectrum to promote international peace and complete disarmament, but I think most agree that, whether it's idealist or not, that's a good goal to work towards.

I would have to disagree. Stalin actually was an atheist but never killed in the name of atheism. The USSR promoted State Atheism and opposed religion. I wouldnt say that because he is a psychopath doesnt meant just because of that reason he had a cult of personality. Look at people in Democratic societies like John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and recently Barrack Obama have reached a cult status but with out the whole controlling the mass media
