  • Best duel or best fucking duel?

  • You dont get these anymore!! if modern films have sword fights your lucky if its 3 minutes because it cuts into valuable film time!!!! remember seeing this when i was about 5-6yrs old and for the rest of the afternoon i was jumping off the sofas and running up the stairs!!! lol! superbly choreographed!!! thanks for this!!!

  • Holy crap, the sword fights in this era of Hollywood were AWESOME! I gotta find more movies like this.

  • Not going to lie, having "Battle of the Heroes" playing on my itunes while watching this made this video considerably more enjoyable.

  • it was sad 1:22 he was so happy to see him but yea..

  • Spectacular movie!

  • Stewart Granger is great there but Mel Ferrer's class with a sword makes this scene really epic :)

  • This was definitely one of the top 3 sword-fights: Other two were with Basil Rathbone, a real fencer, who "lost" to Errol Flynn & Tyrone Power. Can anyone guess which films those were in??

  • @musicalrich1 I'm guessing either Captain Blood, or the Adventures of Robin Hood....not sure about the Tyrone Powers film, though The Black Swan with him is a favorite of mine!

  • @musicalrich1 Methinks that would be The Mark of Zorro and The Adventures of Robin Hood..

Here is one for you what about Basil and Dannk Kaye??

  • @musicalrich1 Or even Danny Kaye lol

  • Long before Grangers grandparents met, Scaramouche was entertaining people in the 1640's, created by Tiberio Fiorilli also known as Scaramouche.

  • Bellissimo scaramouche sei un grande Stewart Granger

  • Ahh yes shot it the "BRILLIANT" technicolor format, now that's color if I've ever seen it lol, the movie is fantastic though I love it!

  • Wow. De Maine went on this video and clicked dislike six times. What a sore loser.

  • Excellent interaction with the environment; it reminded me of some Jackie Chan flims.

  • great. i love european sword fights, theyre so epic

  • Greatest sword fight this side of a Kurosawa film!

  • Film superlativo

  • Senz'altro uno dei più bei film d'avventura di tutti i tempi. Meravigliosa la storia, stupenda la sceneggiatura, superlativa l'interpretazione degli attori.

  • Love this movie!!! Love Stewart Granger!!!! thanks sooo much for uploading!! smiles from Pakistan!! :)))))

  • Touche, senor pussy cat!

  • Were there theatre seats with springs in them in the 1700s?

  • @gregoryagogo ikea has been around for years

  • Shot at 2:10 : upper sections of the hall is a painting... the people don't move!

  • @gregoryagogo why are you watching the fake scenery and not the duel?

  • @miketallica665 I see all! Just happened to notice that the people "up there" weren't moving...

  • Such great corny dialog!

  • I see I'm not the only person who got here through TV Tropes.

  • Eleanor and Stewart excellent hams. Very entertaining. Leigh is better in Psycho.

  • Good plot development leading up to the final spectacular, Hollywood record

setting 6 minute sword fighting scenes. Great 1952 swashbuckler.

  • One of the best movies I've never seen.

He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad!

  • @wonderfulaudax One of the best books, as well. And one of the greatest quotes.

  • Movie or not, I still think that Scaramouche should have made a sieve out ot DeMaine. Blood is not thicker than water

  • @needsoftlady They're flynning the whole time. Aiming for each other's blade, not each other.

  • @Phantomsbreath

You're referring to Errol Flynn? Did he do that a lot?

  • @Bookstop1337 Yes. Hence the term, Flynning.

  • @Phantomsbreath It made for more dramatic swordfights. As did the jumping around on scenery.

  • @Bigqwertyuo1 Yup. Historical accuracy goes out the window, but it DOES make for a dramatic fight.

  • Give Stuart Granger a 4-string Fender bass and, in those tights, he could replace Steve Harris in Iron Maiden!

  • This is just about the best sword fight anyone has every filmed. Both Granger and Mel Ferrer were superb!

  • mc0558,

tied with the Ronald Coleman/Douglas Fairbanks scene which is in Black and White and using sabres instead of epees.

  • He was such a dream boat, a real man and wonderful in the hero role. Not like those prettyfaced boys of today.

  • the movie rox house! all time classic!

  • this movie kicks so much ass!

  • more or less!

  • This is one of my favorite movies! I wish someone would post it on youtube.

  • such a weird choice to drop the score for the actual combat...the fight choreography is sublime though

  • A musical score could have detracted from, or even drowned out, the sound of the swords clanking and whooshing. Music would have been redundant because the sound effects set the rhythm.

  • Man, I wish I could see two women reenact this duel!!

  • You know after watching 'Cyrano' I can't help but wanting to cheer for Mel Ferrer. But Ay I Love Steward Granger's charracter in this movie......ugh who to choose.

  • Stewart Granger's good looks make Mel Ferrer rather ugly. What a handsome man Granger was!

  • This is such a fun movie - I love it!

  • Janet Leigh here was a pretty girl, but Eleanor Parker was one hell of a good looking woman.

  • @takomaguy I still get confused about who is who. Janet Leigh, Jean Simmons or Deborah Kerr? The three look alike, in a way. All were great actresses and beautiful, but Janet Leigh is my favorite, and I had a g/f who looked alot like her.

What grit to be in Psycho!

  • In my opinion the best movie in this genre. Every role was beautifully acted.

  • Great movie. Copied in many ways over 40 years later in Mask of Zorro. Learning mastery of the sword to exact revenge.

    Janet Leigh was hot.

  • That was an epic duel. It was simply superb.

  • In movies when someone is cut a little by a blade, that immediately bleed creating a large spot, but then stops and the blood stein keep the same size. Funny...

  • Such a beautiful scene on SO many levels! The choreography, cinematography, acting, everything wonderful! Has to be one of my favourite duels ever, easily in the top five

  • This has to be one of the longest swordfighting duels on film. The choreography and photography are superb. And just when you're expecting the villan to die...

  • You wouldn't think it to look at it at first, but this scene was actually pretty bad ass. I don't think I've ever seen a better sword fight on screen.

I may actually watch the rest of the movie now.

  • Is it this film Stewart Granger had to play both roles : Scaramouche and de Maine ?

  • no he played scaramouche and monroue, demain is the other guy he is fighting

  • No that was the Prisoner of Zenda...same year...good flick

  • Hello !

Yet, Someone who is a movie professional wrote me that initially it was forseen that S.G.would play both roles so as to give more credit that they were brothers.

By the way, do you know if the film about Marie-Antoinette with Norma Shearer and Tyron Power (playing Fersen) is a good film ?

  • Mel Ferrel died June 2. 2008

If only he was still alive then maybe I could

had the chance to be his 6th. wife, lol

    OMG he was so hansome!

  • Methinks you missed your opportunity by a few decades. Alas, one can dream right? : }

For myself, the young Janet Leigh was quite the knock-out. *growl* =D~

  • Well I am still more into Mel Ferrer.

Then you should just date Janet,

    while I would date Mel.

  • hehehe, I wasn't suggesting you should like Janet Leigh, only that we were born too late and can only now date them in our dreams. : D

  • Yes, that is soooo unfair!!!

Most of my movie star cruches are these old stars in classic movies...

Mel Ferrer, Clark Gable and Gene Kelly!!!

There are all died, so unfair!!!

  • You are absolutely right. All the actors who I really liked have died by now.

  • In this film, they were eventually revealed as brothers. This differed from the novel, by Rafael Sabatini, in which they were revealed as father (the Marquis) and son (Moreau). There was no final duel in the theatre in the novel

  • lol didnt they have music back then?

  • eleanor parker is still i alive i think

  • Great film, but none of them is still alive as Mel Ferrer died this year

  • the ending was pretty disappointing...

  • There was a reason Scaramouche didn't kill him. Watch the movie. It's pretty good.

To my mid this was the best sword duel ever filmed. Both Granger and Ferer were real experts with the sword.

  • It was a fun film, but let's not forget, it was one of the first MGM films for Eleanor Parker after years at Warner's. She was the looseest she ever was and such fun!

  • i love this movie

  • great Mel Ferrer... he's so hot!!

  • I love the swordplay in the scene shop, what with them throwing furniture and stuff.

  • i love this movie. ive been watching it since i was little with my dad. i think im the only 20 year old that i know who can recite every word. thanks for the post its wonderful

  • Not the only one ^^

Only that i can recite every word in German ^^

    LG

    Alexandra

  • thats whats up

  • My all time favorite movie....seen it at least 200 times!!!!!

  • I loved this movie, They did vendetta with class.

Say is it me or isn't the female actress the same woman in Psycho? I could swear its HER! IM gOnnA IMDB it....

  • Yes, thats Janet Leigh, Mother of Jamie Lee Curtis and actress.

  • This is such an awesome duel. Great flick too! Scaramouche is hilarious, smart and knows how to throw down a blood feud.

    Thanks for uploading this!

  • I totally LOVE this movie!!! Thanks for posting this scene!

Do you have more scenes of it?

  • great classic movie, and that scene deserves to be recreated in a video game XD

    final boss!

  • This is STILL The longest fencing sword scene. KILLS the Princess Bride.

Absolutely Spectacular, between two of the greatest swordsmen in movie history!

  • Haha movie fencing is great

  • It was definitely the longest movie sword until The Princess Bride - I'm not sure if that changed. I really liked the scenes where he practiced with the two fencing masters, and the ones with the outdoor duels. I liked the movie way better than the book.

  • Que recuerdo!! Como disfrute esta pelicula. Entretenidisima. Se la recomiento a todo el mundo.

  • 5:38, 6:29, 6:35, 6:43, 6:47, 7:00 ...

Now, see, its this kind of behavior that causes stagehand strikes.

  • I think it's one of the longest single swordfights in cinema history even to this date. If not, certainly one of the best.

  • Definitely. My favorite. Best fencing movie of ALL time.

  • This fight scene is great!

  • Oh yes, this is one of the best fencing scenes *ever*. I love how they're both so quiet and intent, while the crowd floats around them. Ferrer in particular pulls some very graceful jumps.

  • That's some mighty fine buckleswashing.

  • I love this movie. Do you know how I can get it?

  • Bought the DVD from play dot com their international site

  • My all time favorite movie

  • paul henreid w maureen ohara in the spanish main.

  • la pelicula fue buenisima, muy entretenida. Bonito recuerdo.

  • How could I watch the Scaramouche Movie

  • love this film- thanks!

  • I Would like moreclose-ups for Eleanor Parker.

  • Great swordfight!
