I love fishing out at Hay, went there instead of Mullwalla last month and got a dozen cod for the day, beautiful big, deep and wide river. We go out to 4 Mile and head upstream, for 2 years in a row I have found a snag that I was smashed at using Cheese. Going back in Feb for the fishing comp and going to take a bigger rod for that snag, I need to see whats under it. But every single cod we catch we release, no matter what. Go to the fish shop if you want a meal. Let them go!
Scientific research has proven these large fish produce little to no young due to their age. What they do produce usually doesnt grow anyway. I dont see the problem with keeping a prize fish if you are going to mount it. Some bastard from the government will kill him anyway with their 'environmental flow'. The reason there are so many cod in the river now is due to the government restocking programs. Im sick of catching so many bloody cod and trout cod. Its hard to even catch yellas now
I'm not disagreeing with you buddy, just wondering if you'd be able to link me to those studies? I haven't heard of the fact that they don't breed once they reach a certain age, and would be extremely interested to see the results of the studies.
@ForgetTheLight Ive been trying to find the study i had but i cant. I can give you an example though. A friend of mine in Swan Hill caught a 63cm cod and tethered it to the bank and when he woke in the morning there was a 1.2m cod with the 63cm cod stuck in its throat. A cod of that size will still breed but the eggs simply will not develop properly.
@benc1978 i think your talking about fig tree's..not murrey cod...hahaha. anyway i couldnt bring myself to kill one of those old grandad murrey cod....take a picture...give em a cuddle..and let em go.
@benc1978 This is simply not true. Real scientific research shows that fish like the one shown above are prolific bredders. Not only that, they go on to produce fish of the same size. Environmental flow is a real problem I agree, but many people would the problem "sick of catching bloody cod"!
The reason they are in the rivers in good numbers and sizes like this these days is because of fishermen like this respecting the fish and the rivers of Australia by releasing for many future generations to enjoy, Thanks.
@Ashleyj46 im glad that you put her back........great effort boys.i got a big fish a few ago also and put it back....its a great feeling ( not as big as yours though )
they are not endangered lol you can legally keep a cod in vic and nsw, as long as its caught in season, dec 1 - march1. and as long as it is over 60cm u can keep 2 fish. but only 1 fish u can keep if its over 1m long. they are definetly not endangered, i went fishing in the wakool river nsw and caught 8 cod in one day and 4 brim and 1 yella. so the cod outnumbered every other type of fish so how can they be endangered when there are plenty of them about?
@mistydragons They are a long way off endangered. They say Trout cod are endangered too and are protected but i can go out in a day and catch over 100 without a problem. They are often a pain in arse coz they take all your bait.
@00serbia CHEESE. Its the best bait by far for cod up to bout 75cm. Other wise use big yabbies. Im lazy and cant be bother flicking lures all day. Id rather use bait and beers!!! I fish mostly arounnd Echuca. If your using setlines a 30cm carp or small birds are also good bait but dont get caught!!!
@benc1978 oooo i didnt know cheese was good. What type of cheese do they like eating, and how do i prepare it. I know cod love eating small fish, would a live redfin or small carp be good for baite. I usually fish off wyangala dam using bardi grubs, but the grubs are to hard to find, if u know how to catch grubs let me know. drinking beer beside the water is paradise, i jst cant fish without beer.
@00serbia just use cheap homebrand tasty cheese and i cut it to suit the siz e of the hook. u can buy little cheese socks to help keep it together if the fishing is slow but often they hit it amlost instantly. anything live is good bait. Ive seen them eat birds, turtles, frogs, other cod and cans and bottle tops. They are not a fussy fish at all. Grubs are hard work there is no easy way there unless u have a dingo mini digger to scrape the surface but cheese is better i think.
that has got 2 be one of the most stupid replys i have ever came across... what would be the point of taking it home?? cod thaat size is just full of fat nd is pointless eating... you would some one like the basteds that left a 1200mm cod swinging from a tree i seen once that was a complete waste of a good breeding fish
what a shit load of rubbish
