They make a very unlikely pair!!! Doesn't compare to Marc Bolan's damn good tune, but still awesome nonetheless. Good effort. What people get wrong about singers is that they are not necessarily attempting to step into anyone elses shoes when they cover a song, but merely to perform a song remembered and loved by millions. So I think people who aren't singers and are a member of the audience need to cut performers a lil bit of slack.

I like Pete Doherty's work and the LIbertines, but his voice is not as good as Bolan's. I'm pretty sure that there are many singers out there who could perform this classic much better than Doherty

Nothing either is or isn't, things aren't black or white, everything is a shade of gray. Music is no exception, some songs are very locked in a certain form whereby any deviation is considered ugly or wrong. Some songs are all about the entertainment and belong with a certain state of mind, or presence, for example on stage. As for your "correction"... this is a good example of exactly what music is all about, everyone's personal opinion of it has merit.
