how can this yellow man possibly grasp the tender majesty of St. Matthew Passion, a crown jewel located in the very heart of Western Christian Civilization. He should stick to chasing stray dogs for his family dinner meal
unbelievably beautiful. i don't like self-promoting Yo-Yo Ma, & i think Ton Koopman makes the piece a bit too maudlin for my taste, -- BUT: this performance reveals the immense complexity of the counterpoint to the extent I couldn't have imagined possible
Please see also (YouTube) "Erbarme dich" performed by Kathleen Ferrier, conducted by von Karajan. It is passionate--magnificentely interpreted by both
It is Aria 'Erbarme Dich', Aria 47, in 'Petri Verleihung' (Peters denial) from the Mattheus Passion (St. Matthews passion) by Bach, BWV 244. In the original Erbarme Dich, the cello part is sung by a counter tenor voice (nowadays usually an alto, since there are not that many castrate voices left). The lute part on 6:02 is not original, but added in this specific recording. Hm. Also, the cello is nice but a dried flower in comparrisson to the human voice. See f.i. the legendary Kathleen Ferrier.
The melody is so beautiful, that if someone hears it for first time cannot imagine that it's written in the baroque era, and especially from Bach! I am posting an orchestral arrangement of this!
Beautiful. Bach's music is divine.

Very nice. Great Bach. But the best version on YT IMO is with the voice, and it's Nicholas Spanos's.
