If i will want to read a nice meaningful story or some poem, i will probably choose to read some book or watch a movie or sth. Songs like these charted POOR in EVERY chart of every country and ALL of their albums till Duke before Phil got more involved, sold quite miserably. MUSIC is MUSIC. And its NOT to be confused with 'storytelling' and some music on the background. This may be a nice story but still musically and lyrically its boring. And as i said the sales and chart positions prove it.
I think Steve Hackett leaving the band was far worse than Peter Gabriel leaving in my opinion. Steve and Tony were my favorite writers in the band, plus i think in 1976 the band never sounded better.
I to bought this LP back in school in 76. The one after Trick of the tail. Didn't think that would have been topped, but I do think that it was. Beautiful memories from fantastic tracks. Brings tears to my eyes how beautiful it still sounds..
After listening to such a masterpiece like this, it's obvious and evident than Genesis' greatness was not made out of a couple of disguises only...After PG's departure, this wonderful artists kept doing what they knew best: great music for the mind, body and soul...Thanks forever and ever Tony, Mike, Ant, Peter, Chris, Johns ( Silver and Mayhew), Phil, Steve, Darryl, Chester, Bill, Mick, Nir, Nick and Ray...
@SoloDrumMusic1969 True i think but i can hear Philip singing the words and in my archive mind set i hear Peter Gabriel talking to me instead; strange.
{Everybody fight about who was the better singer peter or phil. Nobody ask how important tony banks was for the band}
Beautiful melodies are for children & they ingrain into their memories. Such as the melody from 3:54 to 4:30. Also, it seems that the monumental Hackett guitar solo from "Firth Of Fifth" may have been spawned from the Banks melody that is heard prior to the guitar solo
I grew up with music like this. In those days - when I was young - it inspired me for living the life that I am living now... and now I'm 52 years old. I still am inspired to go on listening to their music. Thank you so much, Genesis, for being able to listen to music as it should be: breathtaking, amazing, inspiring.
@neoprogressive I'm eighteen and I first started listening to Genesis at the age of eight - it's the very band I've been listening to the most. Easily. I must say Genesis and Rush still are among my absolute favourite bands even though I tend to listen to Meshuggah and Gojira more than the former nowadays.
@SDsailor7 I agree with Ranzabar's analysis of the song. Nevertheless, many Biblical references abound. The title itself is an allusion to the bold statement of Jesus in John 15:5: "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in me bears much fruit."
The main character in the song leaves a "crusade" led by a charismatic religious figure, then is reluctantly thrust into a similar role himself. His breakthrough involves an encounter with "the vine"; he emerges as a wiser leader.
@SDsailor7 Strengthened by the vine -- whatever or whoever it is -- the leader moves forward. But as the song ends, he recognizes a familiar figure in the distance who ultimately "vanished into air." What that's all about is hard to say. But the vanishing figure could be the "chosen one" he left earlier, or it could be a personification of "the vine." Ultimately, I believe, the song is about a leader's advancement from blind ritual and cynicism to real faith that works in the real world.
these guys were the most brilliant songwriters to ever walk the face of the earth. there was never better, i don't think there ever will be. how do you top this brilliance??
An epic. One of the best things the band ever did. I don't think the post-Gabriel Genesis ever really got the critical plaudits they deserved. The sheer quality and musicianship is evident.
furthermore to this day i respect the work of peter gabriel WAY MORE than phil collin's, phil collins can't even beat tracks such SHOCK THE MONKEY, peter is just awesome in both creativity and maturity in music.
@rodrigoNIN90 Comparisons, comparisons. It's better to be shot in the head and die instantly, than to be shot in the stomach and take days to die, but you're dying either way. All comparisons are relative. Compare them to your own skills, not to each other and you will find greater appreciation. I do.
my personal comment on genesis: Genesis was good EVEN when phil collins was the singer, BUT they went really BAD after duke, even though i can rescue some songs from abacab to we can't dance, but the songs i like are really less than most people like from that point in the career of Genesis specially when you make somebody think of genesis the reply will always be: PHIL COLLINS of course
I believe that this song has more than one meaning, which is part of what makes it beautiful. The theme of religion is very clear - the very title refers to the line that lies between divine inspiration and delusion. Also, the main character is a reluctant leader - one who simply wishes to go his own way. It is the people who see great things in him, and he decides after much soul-searching consideration that it is his responsibility to lead.
@hotcarlcade - Maturity in the sense of raised conscious, personal development, spiritual renewal, and inner growth. Yet sometimes we find that we become the very thing we sought to avoid in our youth. Perhaps this is not a bad thing, though. "One For The Vine" leaves one pondering - I've always felt there was a magical quality to this piece. I definitely list it as one of my top ten rock songs of all time.
@dylanfan1969 Yeah, sounds like it. Collins has re-recorded his vocal. Swapped a young man's voice with that of an old bloke. Brilliant idea. I hate the remasters. Why can't they just leave it alone! What's wrong with the original recordings? They've fucking ruined it.
@LordRassy This vocal is definitely the original. Every smallest nuance is identical. What IS different is where it's placed in the mix. It's much more up front here, which personally I much prefer to the original!
Por esta canción descubrí al Grupo Genesis allá por 1980, mientras la ponía en el tocadiscos uno de mis hermanos. Desde entonces, Genesis es mi grupo preferido y esta canción una de mis favoritas.
@brosia1000 I see it more as a telling of an ancient ruler like Alexander the Great. Rulers back then often proclaimed themselves to be gods in the form of men. And people followed them to glory. Saying it is the basis of all religion is generalizing, and I don't think that's what the song is about.
If i will want to read a nice meaningful story or some poem, i will probably choose to read some book or watch a movie or sth. True. With Hackett they lost a lot of magic. On the other hand: he wouldn´t have been the right one for the 80s pop.
