It's ironic that this song was a set up between Lynyrd Skynyrd and Neil ,every one should know that they were friends and both made(and still do) big money with Southern man and Sweet Home Alabama!!!
Neil Young is 1 of the greatest rock guitarists ever!
Jeff Beck, Al DiMeola, John Abercrombie, Neil Young, David Lindley,Carlos Santana, Pat Metheny, Ralph Towner, David Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen, is good company.
except the "southern man" described in this song is actually what you DON'T want to represent, as they refer to ignorant bigots who have tried to destroy what is great about america.
the"southern man" you refer to is also a stereotype that has been perpetuated by people other than southerners, such as Neil Young. southerners are a proud, close knit, god fearing, group that love and appreciate family, friends, and life...that being said...Ronnie Van Zant was right!
@MclJames first off, northern and yankee are both the same thing, so you are being redundant. secondly, i am from the south so i know first hand how stupid some of you are.
Not just slavery as well but also the segregation and the crosses burning is a reference to the KKK. This is a great song cause it has a meaning which most songs nowdays fail to do.
It would take a fool to pine for the days of southern splendor.
Hank Williams would not have thought he had it made when they whipped his drunken father from town to town and sold him into slavery as the white trash son of a white trash drunk. If you were not born into the prominent 5% of southern society, you were nothing more than cheap labor.
We (the union) did to the criminals of the south as we did to the English criminals before them. Death to all tyrants! We upheld the premise that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
The so called southern leadership was nothing more than tyrants who would whip a person they considered to be white trash as fast as they would a negro.
you know people in the south are some of the most backward, ignorant, uncivilized, people i have ever encountered in my travels to america no wonder the blokes from top gear said not to visit america.
it sounds to me like you're from england. first of all not all parts of the south are like that, secondly once you get over our accents we're decent people
haha. look at his profile--not even from london. basically, there are a ton of cities in the American south that beat Birmingham's ass in terms of economic importance and cultural production. and if the south has no culture, why did the beatles copy the music of the American south for so many years?
thats bollocks absolute rubbish really! when did the south get to be known as the economic and cultural producer in the world? birmingham existed far before there was a south or a united states actually england itself existed before there was an america. and as far as the beatles is concerned they copied black american music not country music so your way off base mate.
doctorw, i'm pretty sure we kicked your ass in the revolution. so as far as i'm concerned you should stop talkin trash and go back to beating up the french.
thats not very original neither is it very fitting mate, you blokes got beaten by the north so theres no need for you to be proud about anything so have a plate of grits and bacon and chew on that.
About 20 years ago in downtown Yakama Washington I found a bar playing some great blues music. I wanted to go inside and listen, but I was told that if a white boy like me went in there they'd probably find me in a dumpster the next day. As a young nieve Canadian I was stunned to find out that racism still existed in the north as well as the south, and it swings both ways.
Musicians who preach? You'd have a hard time finding one who doesn't, at least once in a while. After all protest music is one of the bases of rock music.
I've just realized that this song describes the racism towards blacks in the South... I've always wanted to know what these lyrics exactly said and now I understand the phrase "when will you pay them back?" When the South will pay back for years of abuse and racism...?? This is a deep song and touching..
I dont kno what this has to do with this video, but the steelers did smoke the pats, and the pats do suck major nuts.. Im a Bills fan even though they are collapsing :(
I (as a guitar player) am impressed by the music together with that neat high pitched voice and that driving piano. Although the words are poignant its fun to ride the music like a train pounding along. Sometimes, when I listen to Dylan, I am mesmerized by the music and pay little attention to the words ( blasphemy, I know ) but sometimes the music is more of an accomplishment.
And another HUGE concept, at the turn of the century, slavery was common in every part of the world. It was not a white invention. In Texas, my father, and his father, worked along side African-Americans, the reason, because they would take the job for less. Almost all of my grandparents were cotton pickers, and they were white. It really isn't a single sided oppurtunity world out there, just people who let themselves be taken advantage of.
I'm familiar with the New Black Panther Party. They are different from the original Black Panthers. Many of the new members are former members of the Nation of Islam. You need to understand that all African-Americans do not support the New Black Panthers, Nation of Islam and are not black supremists. The same way I (an African-American) know that all white southerners do not support the Neo-Confederate, Neo-Nazi, and white supremists movement.
IHAVEA12INCHSAUSAGE The only place you have a 12 inch sausage is in your mouth bitch. You blocking little pussy. I can still get to your stupid ass. FAGGOT!
thelion117, I don't know you or your family and what they did in the past, but we just want white southerners to learn from their past and not repeat the same mistakes their ancestors did. That's all. Don't be offended. I feel that Neil Young was trying to say the same thing in this song and white southerners just took it the wrong way. Did you know Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson picked cotton? They were GOOD white southerners. They wanted to get along with all people including northerners.
I completely agree with you point, along with how you delivered it. Unfortunately there isn't enough people in this world (and on youtube) who understand how to explain their opinions with respect.
Its a great point that you keep reminding me that I am white, and that racism is just a white feature involved in only the white community. Of cours there is no such thing as 'the black panthers', who were an extremist group who were anti-white. Not to mention that there is a revival of this group, in the south, who are even more racially charged than there original prediscesors.
I don't know what the hell you're talking about. I do know that my ancestors who came to the US were betrayed by our own people in Africa. And as slaves we had to survive on our own in the New World. It doesn't excuse what the Confederates did to African Americans. Not all white southerners are involved in the neo-Confederate movement thats going on in the south today, but theres enough of them involved.
I think this song still has some relevance into today's world as I see by multiple youtube comments. The south still has a long way to go in getting rid of it's tarnished reputation. The election sure didn't help it any.
first of all, the current day southern man had nothing to do with what neil young is singing about. i used to like neil young and bought every album up untill this one. to say that every southern man now days believes in slavery and is a racist is complete bullshit. and im going to have to agree with who ever it was that said neil is a just a pot smoking hippie liberal. jsut because that happend 150 years ago, doesnt mean i should pay for it. rock on skynyrd for replying to this in alabama
man, this was a long time ago.... i don't believe he was saying EVERY Southern man thought this way. He was merely making a gesture toward a (no offense) but somewhat popular old way of thinking with southern men at the time and the whole frame of mind of the whole race situation....
You can't talk about nobody. You from Nigeria. I'm African-American and I know more about white southerners than you do. I grew up around them. For all I know your Nigerian ancestors probably sold us to the Europeans who shipped us over here to be slaves for the white southern man in the first place. In Nigeria I bet y'all still got slavery going on. You West Africans are just as guilty of betraying us African-Americans, so you need to shut up.
Hmm...current day? This song was penned not long after the civil rights movements of the 60's.
And the fact Neil was in his early 20's, from Canada, and had just seen the movie 'Gone with the Wind' which inspired him to write about racial injustice in the south. Now he is obviously talking about history here and his reaction to it is how the song came about. The song 'Alabama' by Neil is much more speaking in the modern age and prompted the Skynard response not this song.
I have great respect for the United Kingdom. but if you wanna call the US the British Empire: Part two, I would change it a bit. British Empire 2.0. We have been the world superpower for over a hundred years now, and will continue to be for much time (especially now that we have a much better administration). How do I think it'll end? I don't know...it will surely be around as long or longer than the UK.
Hahaha...this song still seems to strike a chord (sorry for the pun) with viewers. That's a good thing. Debate is always healthy, however random slurs and expletives don't really critique the song or the artist very well. (looks around room...tut....tut)
You Europeans treat the Romana and Turks, and all people so well!Hell,I am white with Degrees I couldn't get into any wealthy nation that's a fact. You are the ones that built the ovens, allowed millions to die,we just had to come and bitchslap some Huns Twice, and don't get me started on bitch ass France, and you the Un-united Kingdom can UP THE RA! We shed our blood all over your damnable old world twice! Yes the Yanks are tired of high brow Europe!
Wow...I never fail to be surprised by the staying power of stupidity. Speaking to Neil Young - through one his old videos which somebody else posted, probably without Neil's knowledge? Very believable, very sharp comeback. Long live the South! The only place in America where stupidity, racism, and narrow-minded standoffishness are considered admirable character traits! To think I live in the same nation as this self-righteous bastard...
This is true. I must admit you have me there. And I didn't say you in particular were a racist. All that aside, though, your comments regarding Neil were...ill-informed at best, more likely mind-numbingly idiotic.
As always there are some neanderthal comments made by people who are'nt fit to take a place in civilised society, coolchad and johnsavs999 Neil Young was right to speak up about the injustices in the deep south and that's not to say the context is not different now, but childish name calling really reflects your sad mental state and complete incomprehension of a song that is a classic.
Why was he right to speak about the "injustices in the deep south." Like the whole country at one time hasn't done things in the past they are not proud of. The south still gets a bad rap about something that was abolished over 140 years ago. You act like the south is the only part of America who's had it's hands dirty. Southern Man was written in the 1970s not 1860. The south has changed...the whole country for that matter.
We hope Harper, we hope. its sad to see men dislike each other because of color of flesh - almost like a chihuhah hating a daschund - animalistic...lol
Neil Young is a Canadian and he moved to the South and saw stuff he never liked about the inequality with Racial Prejudice. So he spoke out for minority groups and he will continue to speak out against injustice until he dies and goes to heaven.
Hey i agree with you, that the South has changed and i don't think the deep South is the only place in America with dirty hands but certainly it is the microcosm and context that Neil Young was talking about in this song, so thats why i mentioned it. I think the American election will be a good example to see how far America has progressed...do you agree?
Why does everyone think all southerners are racist? You have to be one shallow minded fuck to think that! I spent a lot of time traveling the country and was exposed to as much or more racism than living in South Carolina my whole life. What really gets me is poeple around the country think the southeast is a different country, poeple think everyone here are redneck hicks and that's so far from the truth. Of course we have our white trash, but i consider them about equal to urban trash.
what do you think racism is? would you consider George Wallace a racist? or would you say Bull Connor was trash? the political representation in democracy pretty much reflects the character of its voters - Wallace was even elected for the second term, that actually tells a lot about the people of Alabama. I don't think that all southerners are racists but there are some injuries to the soul of a society which take generations to heal. and there'll be scars, of course.
Of course Wallace was a racist, but that was in the sixties. I think the south has come a long way since that time. I just get pissed when I travel and talk to some elitist democrat who's never been to the south pass judgements on everyone living here. My point being there is racism everywhere the south just gets the most press about it. Some of it deserved some not.
Well, what can I say - I can only agree with you. It is a painful nonsense to condemn people merely on the basis of their origin or faith or whatever, and it's one tragedy of a mankind that it has been happening repeatedly throughout our history. Germany needed half a century to get rid of the "Nazi" label - if the same pattern goes for the South, we may be witnessing some attitude change soon, too.
just to let you know lynrd skynard havent been around in like 25 years half the band died in a plane crash. and the reason that was in there song is because neil young was talking shit about southern people
Ok that's some good knowledged right there but maybe if you knew anything about either band you'd know that Neil recorded southern man in 1970 which is 38 years ago and Skynyrd recorded Sweet home alabama in 1974. That was a response to Southern man. Neil and Skynyrd were great fans of eachothers music and good friends too boot! So before thinkin that everyones tryin to bring ya'll southerners down know what your talking about!
So what do Northern Racists hide behind? An accent? Their faces? A badge? You northerners (mostly New Englanders) kill me with your holier than thou rhetoric. Hypocrites. Racists are everywhere...not just the south. AND they come in every color.
It's ironic that this song was a set up between Lynyrd Skynyrd and Neil ,every one should know that they were friends and both made(and still do) big money with Southern man and Sweet Home Alabama!!!

Hahaha...this song still seems to strike a chord (sorry for the pun) with viewers. That's a good thing. Debate is always healthy, however random slurs and expletives don't really critique the song or the artist very well. (looks around room...tut....tut)

I dont believe i was speaking to you was I? No I was speaking to that liberal, hippie, pot smoking faggot neil young
crazycuntryboy2 3 years ago
Wow...I never fail to be surprised by the staying power of stupidity. Speaking to Neil Young - through one his old videos which somebody else posted, probably without Neil's knowledge? Very believable, very sharp comeback. Long live the South! The only place in America where stupidity, racism, and narrow-minded standoffishness are considered admirable character traits! To think I live in the same nation as this self-righteous bastard...

That was in response to CrazyCuntryBoy's lovely comment that Neil was a liberal, hippie, pot-smoking faggot, by the way.

MrFuddley 3 years ago 2
Why was he right to speak about the "injustices in the deep south." Like the whole country at one time hasn't done things in the past they are not proud of. The south still gets a bad rap about something that was abolished over 140 years ago. You act like the south is the only part of America who's had it's hands dirty. Southern Man was written in the 1970s not 1860. The south has changed...the whole country for that matter.
ssharper420 3 years ago
We hope Harper, we hope. its sad to see men dislike each other because of color of flesh - almost like a chihuhah hating a daschund - animalistic...lol
DNIGGYNICE 3 years ago
Neil Young is a Canadian and he moved to the South and saw stuff he never liked about the inequality with Racial Prejudice. So he spoke out for minority groups and he will continue to speak out against injustice until he dies and goes to heaven.
accordionreid 3 years ago

Of course we have our white trash, but i consider them about equal to urban trash.
ssharper420 3 years ago 5
what do you think racism is? would you consider George Wallace a racist? or would you say Bull Connor was trash? the political representation in democracy pretty much reflects the character of its voters - Wallace was even elected for the second term, that actually tells a lot about the people of Alabama. I don't think that all southerners are racists but there are some injuries to the soul of a society which take generations to heal. and there'll be scars, of course.
coiners 3 years ago
Of course Wallace was a racist, but that was in the sixties. I think the south has come a long way since that time. I just get pissed when I travel and talk to some elitist democrat who's never been to the south pass judgements on everyone living here. My point being there is racism everywhere the south just gets the most press about it. Some of it deserved some not.
ssharper420 3 years ago
Well, what can I say - I can only agree with you. It is a painful nonsense to condemn people merely on the basis of their origin or faith or whatever, and it's one tragedy of a mankind that it has been happening repeatedly throughout our history. Germany needed half a century to get rid of the "Nazi" label - if the same pattern goes for the South, we may be witnessing some attitude change soon, too.

crapman94 3 years ago
just to let you know lynrd skynard havent been around in like 25 years half the band died in a plane crash. and the reason that was in there song is because neil young was talking shit about southern people
sykokid86 3 years ago
