Theres only 2 guitar companys in the world that make the REAL SG. Yamaha your NOT ONE OF THEM. They are Gibson and Epiphone period! All others are simply fakes.
@Jossezinho By looking at your left leg, you enjoyed playing both guitars.. But it seems that you enjoyed playing with the Les Paul more than the other because your excitement is continuous and constant. And for the others, Gibson, particularly the Les Pauls, are indeed overpriced and overated. But Gibson does stand for its name. Lets say you remove the logo on its headstock. You will find it even a better guitar than the others after you played it.
I did notice that the Les Paul had pickup cover's.The sound of the two different guitar's in this video are basically a matter of the pickup's because both guitar's are of equal quality.
@amdelux1 Like I said before it's a matter of what pickup's you want to use because these guitar's are very equal in build quality, what shape do you like better.
The only thing I don't like about a lot of the Yamaha SG range is the pickups - I don't think they are terrible, but they seem a little 'lifeless and cold' to me ... I now have an SG1300TS which since putting in a Seymour Duncan 'Alternative 8' pickup has become my fav guitar - So hot ..and it coil taps nicely too.
well i've owned quite a few lesters and 3 yamaha's .. sold all my lesters except for one and it was the best one of the bunch .. i still have two yamaha sg's .. i didn't buy three of em by accident .. and while i'll say that the lester has its good points too if i had to choose between them i'd take the yamaha .. if you look on fleabay you'll see guys sellin a yamaha and they always call em les paul killers .. they didn't get that moniker for nothin ..
I've got an LP and an old Yamaha SG-700S. The LP cost $2300, the SG cost $400. The Yamaha is lighter, sounds warmer, is more versatile (with it's coil switching), is just generally more pleasant to play. The LP stays in it's case, and I'll eventually sell it and make some money, the SG will never be sold. Les Pauls are great guitars, don't get me wrong, but a $3000 LP is about $800 worth of guitar, and $2200 worth of name brand status symbol.
If I were a betting man I would happily wager that the quality assuarance department at Yamaha (Complaints: guitar division) is a whole lot quieter than than the same dept at Gibson. When you compare the two companies just from there websites it would appear than one company spends more time on QA than the other which seems to spend a lot of time and money on marketing. Every couple of months Gibson seem to release a new guitar model, Yamaha only have one brand. If I had the money ....yamaha.
I have to admit I have a Gibson Les Paul judt to have a Gibson Les Paul. It sounds really good and is easier to sell than a Yamaha. However, I prefer playing my SG 2000 and 3000.
dude, let the people who buys those crappy guitar talk.
its true that they are overpriced but you can tell its difference from other guitar once you have one. It immortal LOL . . . but it depends on what guitar you favor the most.
So since this comment thread is attracting very experienced players of Yam SGs, can someone please tell me the main differences between the 1000,2000 and 3000 models (and maybe the one's in between) .
While all have coil split in both PUPs, the PUPs in the sg3k are spinex, that sound much betrter than those in the sg2k (IMHO). The PUPs in the sg2k have very high output while the sg3k PUps r lower output but much better tone, more like a PAF, but still different, I guess you'd have 2 listen to both at the same time 2 know what I am trying to explain. I have owned both guitars, sg2k from 78 and sg3k from 85.The later is definetly the winner..compared 2 Les Paul, the sg3k is better, no doubts.
Not much difference ..I think the 1000 didn't have coil taping as std. the 3000 has MOP trim round all the bindings (and all other features, thru neck etc) ..all very nice ...so wish I hadn't swapped my 3000s for a sax :o(
@Deterant-Hey man ,don't feel bad,I once swapped a '76 all original Fender Precision bass for a Bundy intermediate tenor sax......stupid,stupid,stupid!....We all do it,we just don't know why......Support group, anyone?
the build quality on a sg2000 is up there with the very very best, but unfortunately, the one flaw with a sg2000 is a real humdinger and that is its neck heaviness. the button placement at the heel causes the guitar to topple away from you when it is on the strap and the headstock dives to the floor at the same time........its such a pity as they are a sweet sounding instrument.
That's not an original SG2000, or if it is, it's been refinished. They were never white (only Sg3000's came in white and this definitely isn't a 3000). No way is the trem original either.
The trem I'm sure will fuck up an authentic SG2000 sound but it still pisses over the Gibson.
Hi Bufon. Thanks for your comment. This is an original SG2000 made specially for Dave Mason. I have owned 3 SG2000's. two cherrybursts and this white one. I can tell you, this one has a tone to it that no other guitar has... extremely woody and bluesy, couldn't catch it on video though.
By far, the guitar with more character. (I own 8 vintage Les Pauls and still have one SG2000 cherryburst...)
I've noticed the yamaha delivers a bit more volume. I think it is sharper and manages to "pierce" through surrounding noise. Probably better for the rock guitarist, who will have to struggle against lots of loud instruments, such as drums etc.
Yes, they're very similar. But if you move the video back and forth you'll hear a slight difference. Being the Yamaha a little bit more trebly on the edge, just a bit more agressive. While the Gibson is little more harmonious.
Hi, I think they are very similar (1000-2000). The difference is basilcally the brass they put under the bridge of the SG2000. To get more sustain. Having said that, it is believed that Yamaha sg's made between 1976-1979 were better sounding. Still, before you buy, try several guitars. I understand your concern. So, I suggest you take a portable recorder with you to the shop and record each guitar you try with the same setting. When at home, listen to it and choose. Sound & Easy to play = good.
hi,,sory mate i dont know the first thig about yammys i only play les pauls..seems like a good geetar im thinking the guy who made the video could tell you about thm or look it up on the net..cheers..
I think it was original, not sure though. I bought it second hand two years ago. It's a Bigsby trem. And the tross rod cover has "D. Mason" stamped on it. Regards.

Both a great guitars, with their own character. Yahama SG guitar quality is underestimated by most payers. Same goes for Japanese made Ibanez AR300

Gibson is so overrated. Yamaha and Tokai makes much better guitars than any USA guitar-manufacturer.
Gibson is just a name.. They make money with their name just like Nike or Adidas etc. crappy bullshit companies.
Tokai motto: Quality Before Quantity... Gibson does it vice versa nowadays.
