hello, i have a problem with my Seagate 1TB SATA 2.5, I can't install it on my macbook pro...i can't see the hard drive when i want to install snow leopard. do i have to buy new RAM before i can install Seagate 1TB SATA 2.5 on my Macbook Pro 13 inch*?? please help
@kat9213 the new seagate drives are reported to have a serious problem with new macbooks from 2010 onwards. please see the seagate forums and apple discussion boards. this is due to component architecture on the drives. I'm in search of a drive which will give me exra storage whilst on site, etc.
@kat9213 no you dont need to change your RAM, What did you mean you cant see your hard drive?? Is it when you are trying to format and partition the hard drive or when you bootup??
apple s ram doesn't exist, you can buy from any brand, corsair or kingston are the way to go, same for the hdd, anyway 8gb doesn't make a lot of difference, if you want to see a real performance boost go with an SSD
@theNerdGamer88 upgrading the RAM and/or HDD does not void your MBP warranty. The only thing is you need to keep the original ones because you will need them if it ever gets to the point where your MBP needs to be sent in for repair or replacement. Also Apple uses standard RAM and HDDs that are only stamped with the Apple logo. There is nothing that makes them different except maybe a custom firmware for the HDD.
@theNerdGamer88 It might also be worth pointing out that some HDDs perform better than others in an MBP and that you can tweak the HDD firmware settings but you will need a computer with PS2 port on it which is not a mac ...
Some MBPs are having problems with seagate hybrid drives and some drives with G-force protection built in tend to cause problems and/or drain your battery faster. But there are plenty of reviews and posts online that give you an idea of what works and what doesn't :)
Jeeez.... Western Digital drive? You must have an digital information Death Wish...Westerns suck, try getting Hitachis or Toshibas, if you care for your information!
@jtcdude there is a very small difference in battery life plus the new MBP has a huge battery. You loose something like 15 minutes of battery life with the 7200 rpm and if you are willing to adjust the settings in the firmware you can technically regain that too. After all Apple does sell the MBP with a 7200 rpm drive if you want one!
The 1TB hard drive fits in my 2010 MBP. I have a friend who said he put one in his son's 2009 MBP. I installed it last night. Got it from Micro Center Paterson NJ. Takes a few minutes.
I would loose my warranty if I did it myself, have Apple do it. By the way, none of you need 8 gigabytes of memory, no one uses 8 GB of memory. If you use 8 GB of the memory and it's full, -slaps-
@UvoraTheOnlineWorld i did this and it doesnt void the warranty apple gives you instructions on there website on how to do it and i do visual photography and minor video editing for school and the 8gb comes in handy!!!
@UvoraTheOnlineWorld btw gonna upgrade to 16 gb of ram, its possible, gonna cost me 369$ on crucial... i'm a high school student and sometimes i end up with 200 mb, zoo stop judging if ppl upgrade to 8 gb..
Hi, I have an important quest in regards to upgrading my Macbook Pro? I was wondering, what 1TB hard drive did "you" purchase (brand and model number I mean) for your Macbook? I would like to upgrade mine to a 1TB SATA Drive @ 7200. I just don't know exactly where I can get one of that kind. I just need a direct link. :) Can you help me please?
How hot does that mfkr run ? im wondering what SMC says when you run some demanding APPS. please do tell! im a dj in process of doing this! you have my dream laptop and ill be in your shoes one day! cheers!
@ccdanieldb Could you give me some numbers as far as temperature ?
i know my black 13" macbook has a single fan and it reaches 150 degrees or so when running serato, my older (pre unibody) macbook pro can run serato at 140 degrees (or so) when running serato as well. dual fans do help but i would think with 8g ram that it would effortlessly do more work. do you have SMC fan control on your mac ? you should get it and see what kind of operating numbers you get when using demanding apps.
Hi mate i take it your using the 5200 rpm drive? How is that for speed... have you seen the Toshiba MK1059GSM 1TB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache ?
i just purchased a 2010 macbook pro 13 with 4gb ram, thinking about the switch to 8gb, its only around $150 with the rebate from OWC, my question is was it worth it? is it really FAST
This is a Western Digital Hard Drive and basically they're the only HDD vendor that offers a 1TB Notebook Hard Drive in the market and it's a 15" MacBook Pro, just seen at the final seconds of the video.
ive got the late 2009 mbp 13" wid a 2.26ghz and a 2 gb ram...an blah blah...its the base model...
the issue comes here is tht i use it alot fo djin...serato...n i havent had the system crash till date bt lately ive noticed my sys lags a lil but not often...
so i was thinkin of upgrading the hdd frm a 160 gb to a 500gb or a 1 tb.... along with tht to upgrade my ram frm a 2 gb to an 8 gb....
do u think these mods are necesarry or it wont make much of a big difference
I personally would want a larger HDD. A 7200rpm 500GB or 750GB HDD will give you the best performance. If you need for space the 5200rpm 1TB HDD will fit and is also just as reliable, but will have a small performance hit. Also you should have at least 4gb of RAM in any computer in my book.
Wow, never thought that a 1TB Notebook Hard Drive would ever fit in a MacBook Pro since 1TB Notebook HDDs are slightly thicker than their 500 GB couterparts. I would like to thank you for posting this video as it does ease my doubts about buying a 1TB Notebook HDD for my upcoming purchase of the 13" MacBook Pro.
Thank You for your response. I believe the much tighter fit in the 13" MacBook with the 1TB HDD is due to the polycarbonate. I think the Aluminum made the fit a lot more easier due to the lack of thickness and did you also kind of struggle to tighten the screws around the HDD area with the 13" MacBook after the 1TB HDD was on there?
this does help. how easy is it to remove the bottom, as i also have a macbook pro 15" i7 and im interested in upgrading it since i also have the highres antiglare screen and will want it to hold alot of mov
It has two or three places where the bottom were it snaps in. It will need some force to get it off and put it back on. But just a bit. Don't bend it.
I have just installed same 1TB hard drive but it is taking long time to install Snow Leopard. It is showing 27minutes left since long time. However its not stuck yet as I can see that bar is moving slowly. My configuration is MacBook Pro 15" 4GB RAM w/ 2.53GHz processor mid 2009 version.
Please let me know how long it took just to install Snow Leopard?
@2828528 If you have a 13" pro with 4GB of ram, unless you're running many virtual machines doubling your ram wont really have that much of an effect, increasing your hard drive storage it entirely up to you and if you need that much storage in the machine :]
@MrHumerousify Western digital scorpio blue 5200rpm 8MB cache, have a google for OWC they sell them at a reasonable price - or have a look on western D.'s site for their listed retailers
Got parts from Newegg.com. When you install OSX on the new hard drive you can connect the old one with a usb cable and use Migration Assistant to make a perfect copy of OSX form the old HD on the new hard drive. Windows 7 is not as easy. I just copy did windows 7 the hard way.
I saw that you installed a PC10666(1333 MHz) from GSKILL but at the per the specifications of Apple MBP only supports PC8500(1066MHz). Can you tell me if you saw any problems with the new memory module and also what is the speed of the memory shown by OSX (Can be found in "About This Mac" ). Thanks
@samvaryani the 1066MHZ maximum, do you know if it only applies to the 13in core duo mac? or to all? because this guy is upgrading the 1333 mhz to a core i7, because i have duo core an wanted to upgrade to 133 mhz ram, but i didnt think it would be compatible. thanks
Yes you will have to install OSX on the new hard drive but thanks to Migration Assistant you can get an exact copy of what what you had on the old one via a usb cable. I do not have a 13 inch Macbook Pro so i can not say for sure that the HD will fit in it. I would assume that it would because I can fit the HD in my late 2009 Macbook.
Hey, I was wondering...Did you notice any change in your boot times? Also, do you have any buzzing or clicking with the new drive? Please answer in comments so the world can see - it's a bit tough to Google these questions with everyone still asking if the drive fits or not :P
I do not know what the stock startup time was, but it now takes about 51 seconds to boot to OSX and about 2 minuets to boot to windows 7. There are no clicking or other sounds coming from the hard drive.

Sorry not for sale. Will sell in about a year for $1000 or so, assuming apple comes out with a better one.

Does the 1tb in your laptop kill battery? Do you have a shorter battery life?

@FinaleEnt
Battery life is about 7 hours on the web in OSX

was there a significant speed increase from 4gb to 8gb?
gan0nsl4y3r 1 year ago
@gan0nsl4y3r
No significant speed increase in OSX. Windows responds much better when gaming with the 8 gigs of RAM

Do u need to reinstall Mac OS after installing the new drive? I was also wondering if the WD 1 TB would fit on my 2010 unibody 13 inch MBP...
andyusa 1 year ago
@andyusa

Thanks!

@sshuck
I do not know what the stock startup time was, but it now takes about 51 seconds to boot to OSX and about 2 minuets to boot to windows 7. There are no clicking or other sounds coming from the hard drive.
