Save Middlesex Philosophy (1/7 'This is a Movement Now')

I have a lot of sympathy for the Middlesex philosophy department and I sincerely hope that the petition works as it has done at Kings. However, this video advocates a poor strategy. I quote "whoever did philosophy to earn money?" This is a quick way to get a department vapourised. Phil. departments, if they wish to avoid cuts, should look to see how they can generate more funds and begin implementing these ideas quickly. Claiming phil. is too lofty to require it's own cash generation = axed.

I take it you haven't bothered to listen to Ali's speech in its entirety, taking this section into consideration of the whole... :-/

@TheFatControlleR No, I haven't. Excuse my lack of rigour. I have listened to the segments of this speech given in this video, which I presume is what the majority of people will see. In saying that, I can't see how much context could change the meaning of "whoever did philosophy to earn money?". We might agree with Ali's sentiments, that philosophy has some intrinsic value (I hope so, I'm a PhD student in philosophy), but that is not a line of argument conducive to avoiding departmental cuts.
