The plot is extremely predictable and the characters are as flat and cliche as they get. Take District 9 for example. Characters we care about, along with a important plot. Wikus grew an emotional bond with the single father Prawn and his child even though they were different. The alien respected Wikus as well. Avatar taught me you can solve problems with your pony tail.
Good movie, but hardly original. It's basically Dances With Wolves in outer space. By the way, why do the corporate soldiers wear US military fatigues circa 2010 when it's supposed to be the mid 23rd century? Shouldn't they be wearing something more advanced or perhaps even a corporate uniform, complete with logo?
@skendrii1 Soldiers wear whatever they need to protect themselves. Bronze, until iron came along. Iron, until steel. Steel until gunpowder was protected. We now wear cloth and kevlar. As the next logical step, according to this film, is a huge metal exoskeleton then the uniform of the soldier becomes irrelevant - its only use is to make the soldiers A) slightly harder to see and B) unified.
@nokshor True, but military uniforms do evolve over time as technology evolves. Camo will probably be around for a long time, but the uniforms of that era would almost certainly look different than ours do nowadays. I mean, early 21st century miltary uniforms would look about as out of place upon a 22nd century soldier as would Minutemen marching down the streets of Kabul.

@GenerationMine Avatar had quite a bit of character development especially with the natives and yes the special effects are gorgeous. The story is basically a rehash of stories like Pocahontas but then again most films today are. People bash the story because the special effects are so damn good and quite obviously the stand out.
Story is crap, but the graphics are fabulous - in the end, the crappy Pocahontas ripoff plot overpowers the graphics; it's predictable, but I'd see it again just for the CG.
I like this girl ^^' usually when reviewers interview viewers or casual viewers, they're usually patronizing, and to me they're unwatchable becaus of that... but i like her shes cool.

I've been a video game player since Atari™ and PAC-Man..... Yes, without doubt, Avatar is a gorgeous movie with rich colors and details. The concept is marvelous; the craftsmanship superb.... But I have an XBox so CGI worlds are not so impressive to me. The clichèd storyline, the gaps in logic, the eye-rolling "Dances with Wolves" plot..... I'm glad people like this, but without a solid story, it's merely cotton candy.....

Avatar is just another example of a movie where special effects and graphics have completely cannibalized the story, plot, characters, etc. All they did was take the story of Pocahontas and give it a futuristic theme. Had it not been for the "oh so special and groundbreaking 3D effects", this movie would have bombed.

It took more than 14 years total to create Avatar. They had to wait until technology was able to handle his dream. It was not meant to be a sci-fi, but a fantasy. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I am not a fan of Avatar. I don't believe is deserved the hype that it received. But, I will be the first to say that it had phenomenal cinematopgraphy.
2- I said CGI, and not Avatar, killed cinematography. In my opinion (but not in everyone's), cinematography is the art of capturing moments in REAL LIFE that communicate emotions/ideas/ideals that the director wanted to convey. I'm aware that sceneries and costumes can also be fake, and that CGI does make wonderful eye-candy as well as realistic action scenes, but it kind of kills the point...
Watch Spirited Away. You will see how a movie with absolutley nothing human in it can still capture human emotions. Hell, watch any of Miyazaki's films.

This was a blight on the art of cinema. I felt no sympathy for the aliens in it. You all have been played by Cameron. The whole moon of Pandora felt so broken. Think about it, most of the creatures have a bluish color and those long vines that go into their brains, but the Na'vi are the only ones who lack the four limbs of all the other species. At least in District 9 the aliens held no resemblance to the humans making displays of emotion much more powerful.
@MiRyRE The movie also had some massive plot holes. For example, the Avatars are grown in these tanks in a sterile environment. This would cause them to suffer from tons of sickness and disease once they entered the environment. Also on the note of disease, the humans have been there for a while now. This means that just like when the Europeans arrived in the Americas and the Natives succumbed to an epidemic wiping many of them out, this is a completely different species, making them even-
@MiRyRE more susceptible to these new diseases. Why would the humans waste all of the resources and manpower of trying to move into the area near the end of the film when they could have, in Cameron's own words "pulled out and nuked the entire site from orbit." We never even know what unobtainium does. Perhaps it is a miracle cure able to fight any disease or virus. Now who is the villain?

The reason why the beginning did not make sense is because he was saying something he repeats later in the movie. "It was like a dream. But you always have to wake up." Or something along those lines. It's an attention getter, to get you thinking and curious. Later it explains it.

....Oh I almost forgot the ground breaking 3D!!! And apparently so did James....as I remember it there wasn't a single fucking scene where anything ever jumped out at you. Anyway, not to hate on everyone, but if you like this movie you are tasteless idiot that only follows norm, and as it goes the norm usually sucks....isn't it sad what our world is coming to? Video games are becoming movies and movies are becoming, well, video games.

This movie will go down as the most overrated movie of all time...actually wait...overrated cannot describe how absolutely pathetic this movie is... the most unoriginal storyline ever, mediocre acting 'if any', the scenery was cool but the action was close to none, I've seen better story structure and action in video games for fuck sake! Go play uncharted 2 its a better movie than avatar. My summary of the movie,
"2 and half hours of floating mountains and 20 minutes of lame action scenes."

1- It was an overstatement.
2- I said CGI, and not Avatar, killed cinematography. In my opinion (but not in everyone's), cinematography is the art of capturing moments in REAL LIFE that communicate emotions/ideas/ideals that the director wanted to convey. I'm aware that sceneries and costumes can also be fake, and that CGI does make wonderful eye-candy as well as realistic action scenes, but it kind of kills the point...

This was a blight on the art of cinema. I felt no sympathy for the aliens in it. You all have been played by Cameron. The whole moon of Pandora felt so broken. Think about it, most of the creatures have a bluish color and those long vines that go into their brains, but the Na'vi are the only ones who lack the four limbs of all the other species. At least in District 9 the aliens held no resemblance to the humans making displays of emotion much more powerful.

This would cause them to suffer from tons of sickness and disease once they entered the environment. Also on the note of disease, the humans have been there for a while now. This means that just like when the Europeans arrived in the Americas and the Natives succumbed to an epidemic wiping many of them out, this is a completely different species, making them even-

Why would the humans waste all of the resources and manpower of trying to move into the area near the end of the film when they could have, in Cameron's own words "pulled out and nuked the entire site from orbit." We never even know what unobtainium does. Perhaps it is a miracle cure able to fight any disease or virus. Now who is the villain?

It's a lot like "Detonation" a song by Trivium.
The movie tells about how the humans fucks up everything he get in touch with because he wanst it to make himself comfortable.
Humans should have taken more example from the Na'vi race who live in harmony with nature, and have a paradise to live in.
But no, the human is greedy and selfish. Which is wrong.

The reason why the beginning did not make sense is because he was saying something he repeats later in the movie. "It was like a dream. But you always have to wake up." Or something along those lines. It's an attention getter, to get you thinking and curious. Later it explains it.
