R.I.P. to Mr. Clayton.. huge influence on me in High School. I started DJing around then and the "L.A. sound" at that time was electro-based and this one got it started. Classic indeed.
shit this reminds of how we could be up with music listening to KDAY in Visalia thats 200 miles away from L.A. They didnt have radio stations like this were i was from just rock and country damm i wish i was a lil kid again. These kids dont know what music is anymore believe me i have two teenage daughters
Thanks for posting, this is one of the few songs I still can't get enough of, loved DJ'ing in the days of 100+ BPM. Live in Central Valley and we could catch KDAY really late at night. I remember Battlecat, Tony G and Jammin Gemini, all great DJ's. Learned a lot of moves on the turntables listening. To me they set the standard for DJ'ing at that time.
Yeah homie I'm from Inglewood...I remember meeting Egyptian Lover, Bobby Jimmie & the rest of the crew waaaaay back in the day....I remember the nissan trucks & the jeeps...I had a S10 truck with the top cut off & the I had a 280ZX!!! crusing down Crenshaw!!!
I'm from Inglewood too. Inglewood HS class of 85. I remember rolling down the 'shaw in my samurai and hanging out at the fatburgers on crenshaw and ladera, then cruising to Venice Beach. Good times!!
oh no people from cali south central remember bobby jimmy told jokes in the morning before school on the radio and he used to bagg on people used to have me crying before school then easy e was on the set and run dmc and doc and whodini five minutes of funk and friends
Hell yea, I remember that. I had a delivery job back then and I used to listen to 1580 KDAY all day during my routes. I used to listen to all them fools every morning.! Great memories!
you must be from south central la ? not too many people remember that ,here i have you remember some things .1230 am for your r&b and lovesongs right .WORLD ON WHEELS saturday night.jazz at mavericks flat .sizuki samuri nissan trucks cruzin on the shaw on saturday evenings .you remember that.?
Oh. My. GOD! I have been searching for this joint since 1987 when I first heard my uncle play this joint in DENVER. Now if I can only find the other joint he played with the Godzilla sample, LoL. The other hot joint that summer was Everlasting Bass by Rodney O and Joe Cooley.
Bruh...it sure is. Found the tune and heard the first 5 seconds and recognized it. This is KILLING me because I have not heard this song in exactly 21 years. Really appreciate this.
does anybody remember when uncle jams army use to have mixes at the l.a. sports arena? that ish was the bomb man. I looked forward to that when they had parties.
Nothing will ever compare to that time period. Especially in LA, when Uncle Jamms Army was on the radio. I still got mixes on tape from the radio. 1580 KDAY. First it was Uncle Jamms then they moved down the dial. Next came the Wreckin Kru and then it was The Mixmasters. Back when the DJ's could play what they wanted.
1580 KDay was the closest to the real as you can get.. Uncle Jamms Parties could not be touched..
I feel blessed to have been at a few. Loved every minute of it. If they could set up and DJ like that today at Venice the whole Beach would start rockin'
man to live in LA when all this music was dropping was a blessing. Summer nights chillin in front of the crib with the house stereo speakers pointing out the window bumping this cut along with all the other Uncle Jamms Army releases. Those were the days!
You lucky! I was too young and in the suburbs. Only went to a KGFJ party at a park in Rowland Heights in early 82. Then I went to a KDAY or KGFJ skating rink party in the same city in the June or July '82. That was like WHOA! My first time ever skating to live DJs and hearing music that I'd never heard before. Still remember when they played Do Wa Ditty by Zapp and the whole place went wild. What a wonderful night. I'll never forget it. Funk peaked at this time and slowly faded afterwards.
YES, UNCLE JAMM'S ARMY, was EGYPTIAN LOVER. MR. PRINCE (ARABIAN) ROGER CLAYTON. THEY WERE A DJ CREW BACK IN THE 80'S. THIS SONG WAS THE SHIT BACK IN THE DAY, FLIP SIDE "YES YES YES" WAS GREAT TOO
This was from late 1982-early 1983 and seemed to set the foundation for very similar sounding songs already mentioned here two and more years later. But this song wasn't overdone like the very more popular sounding ones in the mid and especially late 80s.
This along with Cybotron's "Clear", Newcleus's "Jam On It", Hashim's "Al- Nayfish", Egyptian Lover's "Egypt" and Twilight 22's "Electric Kigdom are the all time old school electro classics!
You know your stuff...this pleases me. Seriously, though, you are right. They were DJ "must haves" at the time and no crate was complete without them. Now, people are sampling and bring elements of them back. Too bad the new generation has little idea where they came from. To quote KRS-1:"You must learn."
Man I forgot the all time 12" PLANET ROCK! Yeah these punks have no clue who laid the foundation for Hip Hop and the club music of today. These old school artists have pages on Myspace. You should check them out.
