I do like your video, it's appropriate to the song. It does suprise me how many people think folk songs are twee - I play them this and Sandy's version of Bruton town to enlighten them.
Unfortunately I was born the year Liege & lief was released so never got to see Sandy sing, but have been to a few Fairport concerts. They used to do a heavy metal rendition, complete with distorted guitars about 20 years ago. It was obvious they were having a huge laugh playing it that way .
I think so too. Thank you for saying this. I am learning about how long it takes the human eye to focus to a frame behind. In some areas I wanted to create chaos by rapid changes, and in others I did not give enough time.
The song was recorded by Fairport Convention, the originators of the English electric folk or folk rock movement. Vocalist is the late, great Sandy Denny. Incredibly powerful and nuanced, not fully appreciated in her own time (died in 1978).
Yes, "Matty Groves" and "Little Musgrave" are different versions of the same song; there are many others. This is a great, great song, as shown by the number and variety of its renditions.
'The little musgrave' he ripped off from Nic Jones' version?
To be fair to Christie he does acknowledge it (sort of) but it's hardly 'by' him. It's a trad song, someone else's arrangement with some added lyrics & pipes.
Yes, there is something "drawing" in the song that I can never put my finger on, and it seems you and others feel the same thing. If anyone wants an example of a song that has that effect long after release, they should look at this one.
One of Fairport's best, I must agree. Though your description as 'sick' I think is somewhat misleading - In my mind the message is somewhat more human and down-to-earth. Though I must say the pictures you choose capture the mood superbly. I like :)
I'm actually a nonviolent person, I believe in non-violence and I actually chose not to join the military (I had a full Navy scholarship to a prestigious school) partly because I never wanted to be put in a position where I had to kill.
LOL no I have never cheated, but I have wished I had the courage to let the air out of someone's tires once. Your forethought about the military is very wise. During WW2 when my father had to go, he chose every way he could not to be a gunner because he did not want to kill anyone. It is wise and good for the soul to avoid it.
LOL Mikebert4, I while I do not approve of murder, it does keep the song making sense, eh? People say it is a romantic ballad. Um... he found his wife in his bed with another man. Duh.
Such a classic song. In my humble opinion, Sandy Denny does the best job of singing it, such clear phonation in her voice, and such a wonderful range. So many others sing it, but I find it sometimes hard to understand them as clearly as Sandy. Great video production - you have an awesome selection of knife and sword pictures - awesome post!!
I'm in total agreement with you about her voice. What a voice! Thank you for liking my video and my knives. Honestly I could listen to this song over and over again and never tire of it.
This is the same version that my mother used to sing me to sleep with, I am so glad that I found it! Thank you so much! I am now listening to it non-stop so that someday I might sing it to my children.
I don't think there is much else to know. It is seventeenth century in probable origin. Lord Donald, Lord Darlen and other variants are given to the cuckholded husband, and the Lord dies by his own hand or by that of the law at the end in some versions.
wow! The first time I heard this song was during a course of British History and this song was played as an example of songs during the Reformation and the times of Cromwell
I've nothing against Nick Cave, but this just goes to show how differently music can be perceived (and there's nothing wrong with that!). Mighty Sandy Denny's vibrato-less voice should be heard at maximum volume on this song. She was superb.

Yes, one of their best. I am glad you liked some of the pictures. My "sick" idea comes from killing his wife and lover....? Isn't that sick?
RiverBirch1967 3 years ago
Not really... IMO it shouldn't even be a crime to kill a cheating spouse caught in the act.
