  • Mighty Sandy Denny's vibrato-less voice should be heard at maximum volume on this song. She was superb.

  • Perfect voice! Sandy is awesome.

  • This can only be played loud.Don't turn down volume!!

  • LOL I can agree! Blast it!!!

  • Sorry, quite right! i would like to hear RT do it again live on a Strat, giving it some welly!

  • this was favorited by milady... must be rated 5 stars....

  • Why thank you to both of you. :D

  • Yeah you're right about the volume,

    Never mind,

    It's a great track anyway..x..

  • This reminds me of my childhood, big Hippie brother used to play this, pure Magic!!

    Great post RiverBirch1967.

  • I do like your video, it's appropriate to the song. It does suprise me how many people think folk songs are twee - I play them this and Sandy's version of Bruton town to enlighten them.

Unfortunately I was born the year Liege & lief was released so never got to see Sandy sing, but have been to a few Fairport concerts. They used to do a heavy metal rendition, complete with distorted guitars about 20 years ago. It was obvious they were having a huge laugh playing it that way .

  • Sandy Dennys best.

  • Absolutely!

  • River,

How about doing a video for Reynardine ?

  • smithmarke, I just looked up the lyrics. I have never heard the song but the words sound very promising. I will try it on Limewire.

  • You will find it on Liege & Lief.

  • I love the selection of pictures you found for the song.

  • Why thank you, coramunroe (love your name and the movie). It was so much fun picking the pics.

  • =)

actually I'm a fan of the book more than the movie of Last of the Mohicans.

  • Nice images but I think they change too fast.

  • I think so too. Thank you for saying this. I am learning about how long it takes the human eye to focus to a frame behind. In some areas I wanted to create chaos by rapid changes, and in others I did not give enough time.

  • i love this song it's so nice(the music and the singers vioce i mean, not he lyrics)

  • LOL! Yes, the sound is magical.

  • The song was recorded by Fairport Convention, the originators of the English electric folk or folk rock movement. Vocalist is the late, great Sandy Denny. Incredibly powerful and nuanced, not fully appreciated in her own time (died in 1978).

  • this is so like "the little musgrave" by christy moore

  • Then I need to look that up ASAP.

  • Yes, "Matty Groves" and "Little Musgrave" are different versions of the same song; there are many others. This is a great, great song, as shown by the number and variety of its renditions.

  • 'The little musgrave' he ripped off from Nic Jones' version?

To be fair to Christie he does acknowledge it (sort of) but it's hardly 'by' him. It's a trad song, someone else's arrangement with some added lyrics & pipes.

  • Considering that Nic Jones wrote the tune and collated the words, then yes, I would say it is by him.

  • I am still drawn to this beautiful ballad

I do have a CD of "Story Songs", I wonder why this is not included

  • Yes, there is something "drawing" in the song that I can never put my finger on, and it seems you and others feel the same thing. If anyone wants an example of a song that has that effect long after release, they should look at this one.

  • ..just love this song ..thanks for posting. Seen the Fairports many times at Cropredy

  • You are lucky to have been able to see them!

  • One of Fairport's best, I must agree. Though your description as 'sick' I think is somewhat misleading - In my mind the message is somewhat more human and down-to-earth. Though I must say the pictures you choose capture the mood superbly. I like :)

  • Yes, one of their best. I am glad you liked some of the pictures. My "sick" idea comes from killing his wife and lover....? Isn't that sick?

  • Not really... IMO it shouldn't even be a crime to kill a cheating spouse caught in the act.

  • Whoa, remind me not to marry you. LOL

  • Why would it concern you? You don't cheat, right?

I'm actually a nonviolent person, I believe in non-violence and I actually chose not to join the military (I had a full Navy scholarship to a prestigious school) partly because I never wanted to be put in a position where I had to kill.

  • LOL no I have never cheated, but I have wished I had the courage to let the air out of someone's tires once. Your forethought about the military is very wise. During WW2 when my father had to go, he chose every way he could not to be a gunner because he did not want to kill anyone. It is wise and good for the soul to avoid it.

  • Hell, I'd have stabbed her. It's not so much sick as inevitable.

  • LOL Mikebert4, I while I do not approve of murder, it does keep the song making sense, eh? People say it is a romantic ballad. Um... he found his wife in his bed with another man. Duh.

  • Ahh..... I love this song. it has to be one of the best ones by fairport. right up there with tam lin and genesis hall.

    P.S I like your pictures

  • Hey, so glad you liked it. The song is mesmerizing. I'm glad I was able to find pictures that ya'll like.

  • Is there a greater song than this? I think not. Thanks for posting this. Rest in Peace Sandy Denny.

  • Johns... :D

  • Has anyone ever heard the live version with ian anderson?

    strong competition (:

  • I have not. It sounds like I definitely need to find it.

  • Such a classic song. In my humble opinion, Sandy Denny does the best job of singing it, such clear phonation in her voice, and such a wonderful range. So many others sing it, but I find it sometimes hard to understand them as clearly as Sandy. Great video production - you have an awesome selection of knife and sword pictures - awesome post!!

  • I'm in total agreement with you about her voice. What a voice! Thank you for liking my video and my knives. Honestly I could listen to this song over and over again and never tire of it.

  • when i was in year 7 we read this poem georgous poem love it!

  • Isn't it remarkable that we can read a poem so old and still relate to it today?

  • Nice old recording of an ugly old song :)

  • Did you at least like the nekked vampire at the end?

  • this song does something to me every time i hear it:D:D

    love it bigtime

  • Me too, love it, awesome song.

  • Sandy Denny's voice is quite something. Thank you for posting and making a video too!

  • A gorgeous voice, out of another day and time, it seems. So glad you liked the video. Their sound is awesome.

  • This is one of my favourite songs and I love what you've done with the video.

  • Why thank you, I was afraid some would not like my morbid rendition. LOL

  • This is the same version that my mother used to sing me to sleep with, I am so glad that I found it! Thank you so much! I am now listening to it non-stop so that someday I might sing it to my children.

  • What a compliment, to have brought back a lovely childhood memory. I'm so glad it was the same version she used. :)

  • Nicely done ;)

  • Thanks! It was fun to make. I am glad you liked it.

  • Excellent video, thank you,

  • Thank YOU!

  • Beautiful video!

  • I'm glad you liked it; thank you for a lovely compliment. :)

  • WOW! I love this song, and the video is beautiful.

The only version of this I have ever heard until now is Joan Baez's. This version is different but just fantastic. I love it! Thanks so much.

  • DaisyLee, thank you for complimenting the video. This version of the song is my favorite too. :)

  • was browsing threw these songs n it played n my maw wudnt let me turn it off she smiled all da way threw it hehe thank you xx

  • Anything that makes anyone's maw or mamaw smile makes me happy.

  • Great stuff. Recently bought Fairports hits album.

  • They really are good, aren't they justdelboy?

  • Yup - 'ppreciated that, RiverBirch67. Liked the stairway leading down to the dungeon, too - kinda Freudian, that...

  • you got it!!!! :D

  • WOW!!!Thanks for posting this gorgeous song, one of my all time favourites. The video is awesome.I'm impressed!

  • Thank you so much gio, to hear someone liked a vid I made makes me smile today.

  • Sandy Denny really kills performing this song!

  • Yeah!!! Can't sit still during it,huh?

  • she does this music justice. Guess I may have used to wrong words.

  • Terrific River B. Thank you.

  • Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed my video.

  • The lady at 1:07 is exceptionally beautiful. A well-chosen set of images here, and, as noted, a wonderous song.

  • Why thank you, it was alot of fun to find the images.

  • poor matty and poor lord donald.....Women eh?

  • I don't think there is much else to know. It is seventeenth century in probable origin. Lord Donald, Lord Darlen and other variants are given to the cuckholded husband, and the Lord dies by his own hand or by that of the law at the end in some versions.

A super version with fine graphics. Great work!

  • wow! The first time I heard this song was during a course of British History and this song was played as an example of songs during the Reformation and the times of Cromwell

  • You know more about the history of it than I do, it seems. Care to share a bit more?

  • It's a warning against strumpets (or nosey servants...depending on yer moral code!!)

  • Or lack of a moral code.

  • Quite...

  • I love Sandy Denny's voice :)

  • Yes, awesome talent, very rare these days anymore.

  • fantastic..

  • Thank you!

  • I am french and I don't speak english very well but I can say that You have done an exellent job. Well done!

  • You speak English very well and I thank you for your kidness.

  • this is a great song and the pictures in the video are brilliant I love them all !! they fit the video really well! well done!

  • Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it. You made me smile.

  • awsome video - very carefully chosen images and superb work on the putting together :D (excellent music too !! could listen to it over and over)

  • Wow! I am honored by such a lovely compliment. This video was alot of fun to make. :)

  • fantastic song the best ballad i have ever heard

    great song

  • Isn't it though? We need more more more music like this!

  • its definatly a good song no drugs no rap this is music that is universal and you can learn from it

  • classic!

  • Amazing group!

  • Something about this song is always drawing me to it.

  • Me too; it is hypnotic.

  • this is the only murder ballad that comes close o nick cave.

  • I've nothing against Nick Cave, but this just goes to show how differently music can be perceived (and there's nothing wrong with that!). This version of this song moves me far more than Nick Cave ever has, but these things are of course subjective so no offence meant. Nick Cave has clearly listened to plenty of folk music, and there really is plenty of beautiful folk music to be listen to.

  • tis is probably my favorite song ever. thanks for putitng it up.

  • I'm so glad you liked it. It is indeed a fantastic song.

  • absolutly brilliant

  • Thank you Kiyran; I'm glad I could make something that other would enjoy. :)

  • Sweet honeybee of infinity, that's loud. Great song, especially Sandy's vocal.

  • When I played it back, it was so loud that I almost ran out of the room!

  • Yes, that's true. It's crazy loud.

  • i love Fairport Convention, this was the firsat song of theirs I learned (when i was about 7 lol, no idea what i was singing about) your video is amazing

  • Thank you! It is a love song in many ways, but honestly, quite murderous.

  • Loved the naked vampire babe at the end.Wow!

  • haha! Quite different from the darling Victorian wife she pretended to be!

  • I'm so glad you are ok with it; I worried! You are awesome!

  • Hey River...I watch view and support original videos...your video production techniques are unique on Youtube as far as I can tell...the shaking ( jumping) and spilt second ( .ooo th's of a second) colour changes on the same image...brilliant! good on you..keep'em coming. Sincerely, Teejsay
