For so long i could not figure out the schematics of this shot... After watching this video, i tried it on the table at work and got it first try!! Lucky shot, but i am gonna work on it and get it consistent... thanks for the breakdown!!
how far from center are you shooting through? so about how far is the distance between point A on cloth, or point B on top of cueball? two tips from center?
thank you! i never really tried this much until today. within about 15 minutes or so i was getting almost a 5 ball masse! the most difficult part is keeping my cue stick hand steady. any tips for that? or is it simply practice and getting muscle memory?
Tip hardness isn't much of a factor; although, if the tip were too hard (e.g., phenolic) and if the cue were too light (e.g., jump cue), it wouldn't work very well.
Now, the condition of the cloth is a big factor. Masse shots can be much more difficult with "sticky" cloth (regardless of the tip).
dude.. all of your videos are amazing.. i think i have watched all of them on your website.. very well explained and you really seem like you know what youre doing.. most people tend not to break it down as you which is why your videos are so great..
Thanks, Ive been practicing Masse for a while. I heard about coriolis before so I treid that, but indeed the cue ball came out to high. I thought it was my stroke or my (regular, nonmasse) cue. And when making these shots I allways aimed slightly or alot lower.

Excellent question!
The answer is: more is better, but you don't want to push the miscue limit too much.
With more tip offset, there is less chance to jam the ball into the table.

How much does your tip hardness affect one's ability to pull off shots like this?
