  • Been there today hence searching RAF binbrook and finding this vid. Served there 7 years in the 80s. Very strange feeling driving round.

  • My last base (I retired in '82). Such a waste.

  • Based ther 1972 to 1975. First camp out of training, fantastic momories. Such a shame to see it now. Anybody remember the Binbrook Bomb rugby competition ?

  • my relatives lived in quarters at canberra crescent in binbrook.

  • Well, I can only say "Very Sad Indeed". You can feel the spirit of the camp dying away like the errosion of a coastline. How did the Officers Mess get so smashed up?? Is it crazy people without minds??

  • ive drove by binbrook many times and went to see what it was like now..ur video shows it all..its sad in many ways..THINGS CHANGE I GUESS..but Binbrook is very special...that jet kicked arse...love it..hawkrock

  • great memories went there in 1980 or 1981 with AIR TRAINING CORPS from Great Dunmow 999 sqadron. Spend a week there for summer camp!!! Brilliant time. Went with Bishops Stortford squadron and Harlow sqadron

I was so shocked to see it left at this state! it was the great RAF base i have ever attent to it. Really sad!!

  • Very sad to see the old place in such a dreadful state. My husband was stationed there for a couple of years in the run up to the closure - we had some great times there.

  • I was only a schoolboy when my father was boss of 11 squadron at Binbrook. He had led the marvellous last two Lightning squadrons (11 & 23) from Leuchars to their new base at Binbrook. He is old and frail now and i know that seeing these pictures would break his heart. Just as it did mine. Great memories or a great place and it is shameful that the MOD allows these old stations to become decrepid in this way.

  • 6, Windsmore (?) Rd. 1962-65. Lush green grass, playing on the swings,'zooms' from the naafi, johnny seven gun, catching butterflies, tadpoles from the stream on the way home after school, trips to Cadwell Park. For a young boy this place was heaven. Posted to Akrotiri from Binbrook, what an idyllic childhood, innocent and free of the real tensions of that era. Greatly saddened to see the state of the old married quarters about ten years ago.

  • Wow how depresssing. I lived there in the late 70's, early 80's...

  • i heard a lot of damage was done by chavs

  • my grandfather was stationed here during the war

    flight sgt t.c.newman,

unfortunately his whole crew were shot down in 44 coming back from a raid,

he was in 460 raaf flying the lancaster.

it really is a shame to see the place left to ruin like this!

  • Can someone please help me? I am very interested in this kind of thing and have visted RAF Nocton etc. I have been to RAF Binbrook but not actually gone inside the buildings due to the residential area close by and not wanting to get in trouble. I do not go to demolish ruins or vandalish such history but was just wondering if anyone knew if I am allowed to go in and take some pictures etc for historical research like the ones above. Fascinating!

  • Was stationed here in the early 70's.

Wonderful memories - such a shame to see the place in such a state.

    P8077013.

  • My goodness! How has this been allowed to happen. I was stationed there for 3 years in the early 70's. Wonderful memories. Very saddening to see it in such a state now.

  • i like the abandoned plane!

    what is the song?

  • Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve - I was also stationed here from 1981-1984 - almost brings tears to the eyes to see Binbrook in such a run down state.

  • Nice one.......Shame to see the place in such a state. Did an annual camp there many years ago as a cadet, I hardly recognise it now : (

  • Yeah i've seen it go down hill since the early 90s and its such a shame =(

  • urbanlincs you might not believe me but.....brookenby is on fire right this moment as i am putting this my parents have had fone calls telling us there are 4 houses on fire one roof has gone in and there are 12 fire engines trying to put them all out! And all of this happened just by a brand new boiler exploded! this is no lie!

  • Holy crap!! Anybody hurt? Take some pics and send them to my main site so i can have a look =)

  • no nobody is hurt they managed to evacuate them my friend is going to take a pic of the worst one and i'll ask her to send it to me and if i can i will try and upload it on my computer and send it to you

  • Nice one =)

  • no problem mate! =)

  • Urbanlincs is that lightning still there today or has it been moved? I'm local and would love to see one again. My father used to take me to the crash gate when I was a kid to watch them land and take off. I to have some happy memories of the camp and of the aircraft.

  • As far as i know yes it is but i went last year. I would imagine it is though =)

  • yes the aircraft is still on the airfield BUT it isnt allowed to fly anymore. and i havent heard it running and i work up there on a daily basis in one of the hangars.

  • Now then antony :d guess who i am

  • I was posted there in 1968 - at that time 85 Sqdn was still flying a mix of several different types of Canberra and Meteor. I served with 5 Sqdn and stayed there 2 1/2 years before being posted to 92 Sqdn at RAF Gutersloh in Germany. It is such a shame to see it in a sad, decaying state. Who owns the F6 shown in the clip ?

I would have to say that was the best part of my career so far - just imagine being an 18 year old and getting to play with the world's best supersonic toys ......

  • Wow i wish =)

  • whats the name of this song? i always wanted to know

  • Nicely done.

  • we went there today, and missed a lot out without realising. we got the newer buildings. is the rest all the way past the memorial site cos we didnt get too far down there?

  • The older officers mess parts are in the middle of the housing estate mate =)

  • cheers mate : ) il have to pay it a nother visit. by the way...was there a crazy killer cat when you went? kinda like the killer rabbit from monty pyhton but a cat lol

  • Ermmm no =)

  • lol theres a random cat that has ripped other cats and rabbits apart inside : S

    there are animal parts everywhere

  • Hey guys i live in RAF Binbrook well it is now known as Brookenby! it's a wonderful place i have lived there all my life but now i am moving :-(

  • I like brookenby too. Good luck with the move =)

  • thnx i lived on 21 swinhope road but now i have moved into market rasen

  • its a shame that these places are just left, they're still interesting though as I've been to several abondoned sites, some of which scare the shit out of me. lol.

  • Yeah it is a shame.

  • I echo my comments about Newton. Yet another expansion period airfield lost. Tragic.

  • Yeah newton is fast turning into binbrook now, it's a shame.

  • i used to be stationed there in 1972 as a raf fireman

  • Always nice to hear from ex staff from the base =)

    Thanks for the comment!

  • Yes it's a real shame but this is the uk today i suppose. =(

  • I used to live on camp back around 1981 when I was 17, and have some fantastic memories, especially of the Blue Lion Club. It's heartbreaking to see Binners looking like this. Thanks for the video, so sad though!

  • Yeah it is a real shame as it had such ptential as a site but was just abandoned =(

  • Whilst you were living on the base, I was serving there, in the SHQ, (81-84). Also ran the Cub Scout Pack on the base as well.

  • I know it's a long shot but when you were there you didn't spot any paintings of lightnings. My Grandad painted one for them back in the 80s...it would be nice to find it again. Great video as well, i might pop up there myself.

  • I'll take a look for you and let you know =)

  • It still looks better than brize accomodation!

  • Your probably right =)

  • Bloody hell what a mess that place is now - such a shame to see it that way! I went on summer camp there with the air cadets in 1984 when it was a complete hive of (cold war!) activity - lightnings all over the gaff! Worked on 11 sqn lightning maintenance a couple of times (that old 5 sqn lightning needs a good home!) and in the ATC tower...The memories are still so fresh, I just cannot belieive its the same place... ;-(

  • Yes it's in a sorry state =(

  • You can go to the old Binbrook air base whenever you like.

I used to work for City Link and did a lot of deliveries there, in fact i went there every day. Most of the old buildings are occupied by small businesses now, theres an old Lady with a burger Van in one of the small car parks.

No security from what i ever saw, although the old runway is caged off. There is an old Lightning still sat there decaying, a breathtaking sight even after all these years.

  • i totally agree mr urban lincs!it needs to go to a good home and some most of that equipment in the compound is owned by winchester marine ltd,i spotted somebody in a old car stealing radiators out of a building near water tower complex on the main site, pictures emailed to the police or better still park up observe them from were they cant see you and call the police on 01522 532222!and stop them doing this.

  • Trouble is when the police catch them they slap there wrist and let them go so theres no real deterant for them.

  • Great Pictures!!

But at the same time so incredibly sad to see, R.I.P. Binners :(

Nice to see XR724 though, although from what I hear she's now on an island of sorts, as they've dug up the concrete where she used to do runs, I hope they find her a new home or something, I'd hate to hear of more thefts from her, she's in a poor enough state as it is with out people nicking chunks too.

  • Yeah she's in bad shape it's a real shame =( Maybe about time to move her on to somewhere were she can be looked after properly. And theres loads of raf equipment just sat rotting on the runway too. Share it out amongst the aviation museums perhaps?

  • whats that in the top right of the picture at 0:48 it looks like someone looking down !

  • mmmmm no idea!

  • im planning a trip there soon to take alook myself, should i expect security ect,or is it a good place to visit ?

  • No security that i saw but you never know.

  • i think your images are fantastic urbanlincs top notch stuff !its a shame to see binbrook in this state im just old enough to remember this place when the lightnings were based there, and boy i wish it looked like that now !

  • Yeah it's a real shame =(

  • Good vid. Top music. I live hear and would loveto see the site developed... When did you film it

  • Lots of times over the past 2 years but just lately it's getting ravaged by pikeys =( I took these shots in jan this year.

  • Hi,

was based there myself. Were the paintings in the rugby club?

    Great video. Thanks.

  • They were in a cellar/bunker under the officers mess =) Was the rugby club the bar? if so then yes they were underneath it =)

  • Sorry, should have read crunky's post!

The rugby club was near the WRAF block, across the road from the NAAFI/airmans mess.

The rugby club was a in a group of small buildings along with the buff lodge and the car club. Probably demolished now.

There was some paintings done in the rugby club, but I can't remember what they were of now.

  • Had my 21st birthday in that Rugby Club - boy was that a night. 9th April 1983. Still can't remember even to this day, how I got back to my accommodation in the old Seko huts.

  • Sounds like a good night then =)

  • Cool Vid. I was based there too and was shocked to see the state of the place. Stunned to see you found my paintings in the "Bunker" beneath the Officers Mess!

  • I had to clamber over a hill of rubble to get to them but it was well worth it. :-)

Nice to hear from an ex raf binbrooker too..

  • u aint got no pics of da under ground tunnel der

  • I thought we had some on the website i will have to put a couple on if there aint any..

  • Phlegmatic as ever. A real schism of society.

Whatever happened to the Sattelites and Mr.Bowie

  • The Satelites will be back soon and it was Lou reed mate =)

  • better still

  • Great video...awesome music choice to go with it, really sets the mood....so nostalgic to be in such buildings...They have a historic institue over here the state put up for demolition, the town wants to save it

  • Tell the town from me well done! Glad you like the vid mate =)

  • what a sad site.i was based there when they scrapped the lightnings and spookily, ive just been up there to see what the place looks like now, before i looked at this on you tube.if you do another video, could you get more sights, buildings from outside?how did you get access to the buildings?they are all fenced off?great video mate.

  • I will post one up soon with a laod of outside stuff. And there was no fences around the bits i went in =)

  • nice work mate very chilled out, great track too :-)

  • Cheers mate =)

  • fate made it so that all conditions were right for me to really enjoy this vid. exhausted, freshly home, and stoned. No urge to click buttons. so I gawked well. Beautiful shots.

  • Cheers dude! Glad you like it =)

  • hey!
