This is a signature Adam song. The only song this bass intensive in U2's career. The bass patterns just keep on chopping and changing all along. AND it was the band aid for my first real break up. I've nothing but love for this song.
brooding B-side. dark & moody. I think all U2 fans have their own imagery they pair with certain songs, yes? My imagery for The Unforgettable Fire is very different from my imagery for The Joshua Tree. Depends where you were in your life at the time, too. I was 13 when I discovered U2, so obviously they made a huge impression on me, and will always have a special place in my heart.
this song reminds me of driving from san diego california to ensenada mexico back in 88 with my girl........man what a great time we would have in all the cantinas down in mex.....i agree this is one of u2's best songs.
You can hear Clayton plays bass two different ways in this, changing style in the "All roads lead to where you are" section of the song.Nice touch........
Listening to this is what I'd imagine having an out of body experience is like. It's haunting, mysterious, beautiful. It is the best U2 song ever - there I said it.
Maybe the most underrated and Unknown song written by U2. It´ very beautiful, especially the opening chords, the rythmic section, The atmospheric sound, etc
OK OK... he's a 'hunk'. But I still think this is one of the most beautiful songs in U2's collection. Can't think how many times this song has lulled me to sleep after a hard day with just the equalizers lights hopping up and down in the background.... and I'm a guy!! :-)
Had the EP WAiA, best record of the early 80s, this is such a fine, fine track. Really should be played at all of their gigs - rather than silliness like Pride ...
U2's hidden gem!!!...congratulations!!!. you are a true U2 fan if you have found this song...and as a true fan please slowly close your eyes at the 3:20 mark and relax..... at 3:30 U2 will take you to a place which you have never been before....lets the journey begins!!!
When U2 were the Radiohead of the 80s. Great tune, most of U2s best songs are found on b-sides. Recently, one feels they're not trusting their gut instinct and instead playing safe... but once upon a time... what a great band. Anyway my rant over....
I hate to bust up the party, but I don't think Larry Mullen played on this song. I am also pretty sure Brian Eno played bass on this song. Unbelievably beautiful song. I am a 40 year old guy who has loved U2 since I was like 12. I can do this song with a drum machine and a 4 track. I feel this was a test track for "The Unforgettable Fire", which is argueably my favorite U2 album.
One of the greatest song, that is made of the greatest band of all time !!! I agree with the fact that this never made it to a real studio-album. Can't understand why !! Anyway, another reason why '' Wide Awake In America'' is a small, but priceless album !
This would've fit well on the Joshua Tree, better than Mothers of the disappeared I feel. It has that late 80s U2 twang to it. Great little number, made all the better that it is so tucked away on Wide Awake in America.
It's almost a scandal why this never made any of the albums particualarly the Unforgettable Fire. One of my very favourite U2 tracks. Thanks for uploading this.
I adore this song, it's difficult for me to pick a favorite from u2, cause there they have so many extraordinary ones, like new years day, or more recently windows in the sky
No no no! I really am sorry. I have no problem with the fact that you are German. I know I shoudnt of said what I did. I was speaking in anger at the time and it was only afterwards I realised what a nasty thing I had said. And now reviewing my comment...I am sincerely sorry.

Oh dont say that. I dont hate German people. Im not that nasty. I mean theres a German kid at my college called Ralf and I get along with him fine. If anything I like him more than I like my British friends. You dont know how ashamed I am at my comment Kittichan... Im so f***ing annoyed with myself.
Well, unbelievable, that this song is a B-SIDE(!!!). Never ever listend to such a perfect song before. The guitar is at the end is...PERFECT. So intensive. Much better than these overrated Shred and Trash Kings.
4:03-4:19. Ohhhhhh I love that guitar! What a fantastic song. All I listen to all day, everyday is U2. They are musical gods in my opinion. Thank you for the upload.
Totally agree with you. What about minute 4:19 till the end. Oh my Lord! If you listen carefully you'll notice that the guitar and bass sound heavenly, absolutely amazing sound, something out of this world. An overall incredible song. Song's good throughout. Can not believe is so underrated. One of my favorite U2 songs, if not my favrorite.
Too right "locoluckyman". That guitar works so well wath that bass line towards the end. Next to "A Sort Of Homecoming"...this is easily my second favourite U2 song.
And yet again Rotaryfatboy and U2Fan have stolen words from me about this incredible band.
Hi U2, sorry for not replying. I was away on holiday with my family and recently got married too. My wife now realizes how deeply I am in love with this band. She likes them too now :)
Cheers (belated) HAPPY CHRISTMAS (and as me being muslim, to all muslim brothers A HAPPY EID) and HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL
Your welcome. It really annoys me when people slag off U2 when they are so brilliant. Makes you wonder what kind of music all the haters like. Thanks for the nice comment.
It does sound like a nighttime song; something ethereal about it. The theme about the unrealistic expectations we have in relationships makes it timeless.
My brother & I could never make out the lyric, "Seed is spilt; the bed defiled."
When I first heard this song... I would play it every night as I fell asleep....this was like my secret song from them...the masses would know most other song from U2...but only true fans would know this one.
I used to think of this song as my secret song as well... a song that, as far as I was concerned, I was the only listener. I had it on my Unforgettable Fire EP cassette and would listen to it in my Sony walkmen on overcast, misty days.
It's still one of my favourites, and yet, so unknown... yet captures the essence of ethereal, atmospheric U2 of the 80's.
i have been listening to this song about 15 years ago and still never ever get sick of it..and still listening to it...what a brilliant song...so dreamy so sexy and everything else..."all roads lead to where you are"
This feature of U2 of ending songs with music is amazing. Love Comes Tumbling,Heartland,Streets,With or Without, and others maybe (dont come to mind now). This ending sums up my life initially remembering and then strengthening when it gets to higher tones. One word....BRILLIANT!!!
I have (OK had) the Original EP and always thought those 4 songs were the best ever.... but especially this one. Friends who hear it always ask where they can find it and I tell them good luck... until now!
'Wide Awake in America' EP- The perfect four songs- you can listen to it over and over- so beautiful; the live version of 'Bad' is by far the superior to the studio version.
