David Tennant is undoubtedly one of the finest and most versatile actors ever to grace the world of the arts. He is absolutely brilliant in all he does, and Hamlet is one of my favourites. I simply love Tennant in all he does- a brilliant actor of all sorts :)
Why do you all have to make Doctor Who, and Star Trek/XMen Jokes?? This is neither. This is why actors get so upset, Tennant could do ten years at the west end as Hamlet, and one as Doctor Who. More poeple would know of his tenure as the doctor than Hamlet. Yikes. It's upsetting. You're doting on his former proffession, rather than this current, beautiful piece of work.
David in a suit...speaking Old English...being the sexy, angsty, and amazing Hamlet...mmm...yeee~ This is the version I wish my English teacher had shown us
She would dare not do that because none of the females would think about the play but instead on how they are inexplicably attracted to David Tennant. English teachers must think about those things.
Yeah unfortunately that's too true. Although my AP class was a bunch of lunatics that hated Doctor Who so I'm not so sure we would have had that problem. But still it's sad because this is the best rendition of Hamlet I've ever seen.
Heheheh I remember the first time I read this play, absolutely loving the almost unbearable tension...
Claudius is like, "SO NOW EVERYTHING'S FINE, RIGHT? YES? EVERYBODY'S HAPPY" and Hamlet's looking like somebody shit in his cereal. "Mothafucka, that ain't 'happy'...nephew's got his murk-face on, you need to stop trying to Touched-by-An-Angel his ass, he doesn't LIKE YOU"
We need to find a teenager who can do Shakespeare. The raw aimless unbridled anger of the young man hamlet is not scene, but David Tennant is awesome]
@cooliohooliokid - "A little MORE than kin and less than kind" - "more" because Claudius is both Hamlet's uncle and stepfather and "less" as he has "unkindly" married his mother and usurped the crown or simply that he does not think he is being genuine - this depends on ones interpretation. And also as Claudius has just referred to him as "our cousin and our son".
David is such a brilliant actor. It's not easy to pull off a Shakespeare role, and to speak in the old language. But he does such a fantastic job with it!
I absolutely love how expressive David's face is. The lines of his aging, even though he looks incredible amazing, make his acting even more interesting.
I miss that in the new Doctor, the life experience of David.
And I love Hamlet, I'd like him to be recognize not just for DW but for his amazing talent in general.
I can proudly say that in addition to being the second time I've seen Patrick Stewart in a Shakespearean production, the first time was in the flesh, playing Prospero in a dress rehearsal for The Tempest.
I don't understand what people liked about this. Take Claudius for instance. Do you look at him and think how this man is a liar, an adulterer, and a cold blooded killer? I'm not saying he should wear vampires teeth, but he has none of the facial and vocal tics befitting such a man. Stewart's Claudius just seems blank and amateurish.
@TheHandsomeCrab I can understand what your getting at, but I think he's more subtly cunning then downright crazy. I think he seems cold and manipulating because all his happy-happy talk is an act and that makes him to me even more evil. Anyway, each to their own.
@TheHandsomeCrab That's the point. He's not going to run around with blood on his hands is he. He's so smooth and manipulative that he managed to slip infront of Hamlet even though he's not the rightful King. It's the whole essence of his character. Surely you know the Lion King which is based on this play. Simba never suspects Scar as a child, and nobody questions Scar over Mufasa or Simba's death, because of his position in power.
@MrArturoui I don't think that Young Hamlet is rightfully king, as such. The title of king would often pass on to the King's son, but not necessarily. The King could name another heir, or the council could elect someone else. The line of succession wasn't as we know it now.
@Eruadhiel in the play Old Hamlet's Will is never mentioned or even made a point of. Therefore, automatically, Hamlet is king. But Claudius is a sneaky devil who married his mum. Making him King. And the line of succession is the same. The play mimics the English monarchy (Gertrude and Claudius like Henry VIII and Catherine/Aragon). It's partly a satire in that sense.
@1Amaya1 O.O (lets hope he dosnt see this other wise .....) My bad i asked my mum if she knew who it was she said nope so i assumed it was a bald cap My bad
One of the best scenes, however the only thing i have against it, is that since they're talking about Hamlet being in deep mourning and he goes on about why he wears dark clothes, as the costume designer i would have switched the white dress shirt for a black one. The same holding true for the pocket handkerchief. Because he looks dressed like anyone else. That would have made the scene make more sense.
I'm sorry, but I can never take Patrick Stewart seriously in movies like this. I keep expecting him to suddenly stop and say "Computer, end program." I watch too much Star Trek. =/
Wow. I LOVE Hamlet. I have been studying it for years and I have seen all, yes, literally ALL, of the adaptations available on video and DVD, as well as a few plays and read various versions, and I must say that watching Patrick Stewart play Claudius again was absolutely remarkable! The man is brilliant! He actually wrote an essay on how to play Claudius. The way they chose to end this particular version was exceptionally moving, as well. When he died reaching for Gertrude I got goose bumps!
This cast was brilliant, and Patrick Stewart was nothing short of amazing, and David Tennant, well, he was brilliant :) really really love the directing too!
Later on Hamlet rips one of the cameras out of the wall before beginning a monologue with "Now I am alone", which could support that idea, although I'm not really sure
The first published version of the play says Yorick dies 11 years already before Hamlet comes to his grave. The olater version it is 21 years. Hamlet is around 5-7 year old when he is carried on Yorick's back, meaning at the present time of the play, Hamlet is 18 according to the first version, and 28 according to the second version.
I still wonder why there is the difference in the years stated though. odd?
This is the best "Hamlet" version I have seen sofar.
Other versions, the actors portray Hamlet are all too old. Hamlet is supposed to be young around twenty because he has just returned from studying in England.
I love that Polonius is whispering to Laertes, very few version I've seen actually show the odd theatricality of the court and Polonius as the twisted puppet master...
Any Ucc students out there agree?
and so i don't sound too pretentious... David Tennant is very very pretty
Patrick Stewart is much better in this one than in the 1960's version... but I suppose that is because he has more experience in front of a camera than back in the day when he had hair =)
@Jitpring No, but I'm planning to compare the two portrayals of David Tennant and Derek Jacobi. I've already seen Jacobi in Cadfael and Doctor Who, and I know he's a very good actor.
@dwviolinist Excellent. And I can't recommend strongly enough that you watch him in I, Claudius, which in my view is the greatest miniseries ever. But be careful, it's the viewing equivalent of crack: Once you start watching, you can't stop! It's here on youtube. Start here:

Wow. Simply brilliant. David is the best Hamlet ever. He plays the moodiness perfectly. I could do with out the slicked back hair, though =p.
