  • This sounds like a steel string banjo, and I don't believe that steel string banjo came into fashion until well after the turn of the 20th Century.

  • @frettedstrings1 It's gut, actually -- the guy who makes these vids doesn't play with steel strings. They do have a unique sound, don't they? Bright attack like steel, yet softer, like nylons. I use heavy gauge nylons myself which give a very snappy sound when played hard -- check out my videos for more music in this style.

  • Your posture, the sound, the scientific facts, your clothes, everthing is so NOT old. try harder

  • I thought this was authentic, because it had no sound(because my headphones weren't plugged in) so I thought it was a real video, then I turned the sound on and was like "haha...no"

  • Nice to see people who have no sense of humour, make fools of themselves here with their comments. There is even one really stupid comment here, which says "s bull shit. I'm a lesbian and", what in the world being a lesbian has got to do with this video is utterly beyond me. & even the Bossy ones come out of the woodworks, to dictate to others what they should do & not do.THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEOS & SENSE OF HUMOR, MAN KEEP MAKING THESE VIDEOS, I LOME ´EM. FINE BANJER PLAYIN´ SON !
  • ok stop saying they didnt have sound in the 1800s they had sound films then they were just experimental and appeared in 1890s

and they had five string banjos long before the 1870s 80s 90s etc...

and yes they played three finger not scruggs style but still they played all kinds of styles scruggs killed banjo variety with his style because no one ever hears this wonderful music

none the less great playing enjoyed very much!!

    cheers

  • The real giveaway is the steel strings -- in the 19th century they would have been gut.

  • FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • Like this is bull shit. I'm a lesbian and even I can see this is like totally fake.

    Fuck you!

Next, how about a fake lessie banjo player from 1890 who pees in her petticoat while her LGF has her head up her knickers.

  • well its a shame he has to lie but its still good stuff.

  • Joel Sweeney ...NOT

  • Don't be a moron... he has several of these "films" posted here. He's just trying to keep this music from dying, not trying to actually convince you that this was actually shot by Edison. Just try to appreciate it instead of wasting your time to be critical.

  • People need to get a sense of humor. OF COURSE it's fake, it's just a lot cooler for him to play in what looks like an old movie, it sets the mood :D

  • This is not an Edison film i can tell you added a film effect on the video. Where is the film grain if it's an 1893 film. Actually i've researched the banjo player by edison on the internet and there is no banjo film made by edison. This video is fake.

  • I love the sound of the banjo, this obviously isn't an Edison film, but how it MIGHT have sounded back then.

  • Very good, that's exactly what banjo playing should be, fun. What is 'Hezekiah' playing?

  • The film is real, the music is dropped in for more of an impression. No one would watch this guy if there was no sound. Think a about it.

  • sound flims did not come about until late 1920's and filiming did notr come out until 1900 this is a forgery

  • @p1ckerings

It's not a forgery. It's a joke. A forgery at least fools a certain number of people. This only fools idiots, which doesn't really count.

  • films fro 1920's don't have sound,this is from 1929-1935 movies

  • @LUXITANIE films from 1920's - 30's didn't have good audio. Believe me this video is fake. If this film were from the 1920's - 30's then it would have grainy sounding audio.

  • @uncutfilm I have watched some movies from that period and they have a the sound quality like you said, the videos that have some better audio quality have date from 1935 till today.

  • @LUXITANIE I know but this isn't film from the 19th century, this video has been made by the user himself shot by a video camera.

  • Hes just making a creative way of showing music from the 1800s.

  • Yes of course the sound recording is contemporary. The oldest thing about this is the "joke" of pretending that the whole thing is authentic.

  • Don't care if it's really old or not - it's nice classic banjo style.

  • No doubt early primitive sound equipment was to record the music.

  • nice try but this is not a old video you did this like this year but good try they didnt have video then

  • **raises an eyebrow**

    1893 eh?

    haha, love your vids.

  • incredibly great .. Thanks , Guy

  • To make it look old, you should have added a dirt effect to the video, and it should have been recorded at 16 frames per second.

  • Why is the sound quality so good for a 116 year old film??

  • Because it isn't that old.

  • 116 years isn't old?

  • I mean the flim isnt old not the banjo.

  • Comment removed

  • These vids are so much fun to watch & listen to... thanks and please keep posting more.

  • well done boys!!

  • Ha Ha....

I liked the music and the "old time" flicker effect was way cool too. How did you get that in the vid?

  • Wow, this was great!

People on youtube are soooo gullible :)

  • in the beggining of the 20th the movies didn't have sound

    this is so fake

  • they didnt even have talkies until like, the 20's

  • GREAT tune, not easy to play. What tuning are you using on that banjar, there? Banjeau Chucque would have liked your style, suh.

  • Another fine work of art.

What a FUN and whitty video done in the old CREMONA style setting!

Some people just don't get it.

  • I've seen films from 1893

and this is not from 1893

I don't think they even had sound in film

    in 1893?

  • Not sure but there could be magic involved.

  • @oldcremona agreed.

  • Awfully good sound quality for 1893.

    An amazing find.

  • Oldcremona, A very snappy tune. Very enjoyable. thanks. Regards, J.

  • nice neck tie

  • Love it! Well done.
