I know I played this when I was younger because I remember crying after messing up the cartridge. This song is familiar waaaaay in the back of my mind.
"He's gone... it all happened so fast." ".........Yea..... so his farm....... no longer." "Hey, have another drink! This should be a joyful sending off." "That's right. It's no good to be depressed!" "Spring is beautiful with the cherry blossoms!" Dude, best game ever.
I'm so lucky I got to play this game as a kid. My friend sold me his copy for 5 dollars and it was the first Harvest Moon game I ever played. It was the best five dollars I ever spent.
I remember digging through all my stuff this past year when I was leaving college and I found this game. I played it for a bit and realized that as you got older, time moved faster (in the game). I just got completely overcome by this wave of nostalgia and sat at the menu screen for minutes listening to this song and remember sitting in my room in my parents' house playing this game for hours. It doesn't help that this song just sounds like the perfect track for time slipping away.
@hollipoison13 I don't like how they age your character and all the eligible bachelorettes, but won't age anyone else. I mean, you'd think the others would die, considering they started out older than you but then ended up being younger than you after a while. I liked Back to Nature the best, followed by this one.
listening to this music reminds me of when me and my sister would play this all the time as kids, I would wake up to the sound of her playing it, we would always tell each other about the secrets we found.... :(
yeah I got this game almost 10 years ago, and was by accident. Felt like it changed my life in a way. I disagree with you who think everything after 64 was shit, I enjoyed friends of mineral town probably more then this one, magical melody was fun, and save the homeland had a very good feel to it, with the music and the friendships you made, but yeah, no responsibilities and being able to play this all day was fun, it's been forever since I've played HM though, too bad for growing up.
god 0:00-1:03 is the best part for me. It's sad, but when the first time I played this I remembered the Sakura pedals falling off the trees and the townspeople were like, "I can't believe he's gone..." And I was like I didn't even start the game and there's drama going on... I'm going ti love this game, which in fact I did and now I'm about to cry because the song is just so beautiful...
omg! I just about started crying hearing this....i loved this game so much. the memories of playing this with my brother and friends. We would stay up all Saturday night playing this and then crashing in the middle of Sunday school. I wish I could go back to then. This is one awesome game!
I just unhooked my Xbox 360, found an standard def. box t,v and dug up my N64 that I have not played for 10 years. This game was still in the system from years ago. It's funny, I plugged it in and listened to this theme, hit start to view my save files, and they were all still there from years ago. My friends and I all made our own files since I was the only one who owned it at the time. One of those friends passed away since. It brought me to tears, happy and sad memories of rainy days pass.
ah... i luv these games. I'm so mad, I went out to by some, since i just found out that they had ones for girls (IM SO SLOW!!!) and I was so upset that i couldnt find one. I was looking for MFoMT, AnWL, and HM DS Cute.... I have DS, 64, and AWL SE, and just the best series EVER.
You should put up the Title Theme too, where it says the classic engrish, "Push The Start". Also the Town Theme and Mountain Theme were good, as were some festival themes.
This game is still by far one of the best harvest moons. In fact, I would say that from 1999- 2001 Natsume made the best ones of the series: 64, GBC 3, and Back to Nature (and Friends of Mineral town which came later was based on it). The ones they come out with now are alright, but they just feel recycled and stale.
i seriously couldn't agree with you more. 64 and Back To Nature were my all time favorites. I haven't played GBC 3, but i've played my fair share of HM's. (64, BTN, FoMT, MFoMT, G&B, DS, IoH, STH, AWL, AnWL, AWL SE, MM)
but none of those compare to the simplicity of HM BTN and 64 <3
I remember Marrying Karen and having the baby and I waited for sooooo long to see if that baby would grow older than a toddler......It didn't happen...at least not for me.
this is probably the best harvest moon ever. i dont know why, but the culture in 64 is better than any other harvest moon games and all the hidden secrest too!!
this is my absolute favorite non action game. hell, it even beats some of my favorite action games. i still play it from time to time.
i always loved that it had a sort of free play aspect while having a changeable storyline based on what you do. i must've played through the game so many times trying to get every last recipe and photo.
if you don't own an N64, go buy one and then try to find a store that still sells this game. i highly, HIGHLY recommend it
such a classic. its got that drab feel about it, the slow day to day life of a farmer. watching the sun go up and down every day, and having a good night's rest after a day of long, hard work.
I tried to give the series another chance at one point, and played one of the GameCube Harvest Moon games (I forget the title -- they make so fucking many now), and when you picked up an item, it increased your character's fatigue, much like using tools did. That pretty much says it all. The developers have no fucking clue what they're doing anymore.
yeah... that was Magical Melody, the worst in my opinion, but Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life is good because it's realistic and you go from Teen, to adult, to middle aged, to old man, to death, and everyone ages alongside you.
HM:DS is pretty good too, along with the new Tree of Tranquility, but ToT kinda got too advanced lol
@chakrashoes yeah, it made working so much of a pain in the ass. Ok i'm gonna go work for 5 minutes get tired go to bed, and then wake up and do it again.
@chakrashoes I personally liked A wonderful life.... after that though it was all bad.... one thing is for sure.... Harvest Moon games no longer hold any amount of charm
@uglypinkmoose I think that they should do a remake of this game, with all improved graphics, but everything else is the same. IMO this was the BEST harvest moon I have played to date, and I have played nearly all of them
@Thejester1314 ya or at least use the exact same mechanics....I would have to say this is my second favorite HM... Back to Nature is my all time favorite for sure.... the original was very good to though I consider the N64 version to pretty much be a remake of the first with improvements
@uglypinkmoose The only ones I never played where the ones for nes and snes, but I loved the town and the story in this one, all the other ones have pretty much the same story, you come and buy a ranch and start farming the crap out of it, at least this one had a slight back story to the ranch before you farm the crap outta it
@Thejester1314 hmmm the 64 story is pretty much the same as the original and Back to Nature....... the new games don't use that story though... they brought rainbows and fairies into the mix lol
@Thejester1314 I agree... in fact doesn't even seem like they try anymore.... I thought Save the Homeland was the last one to feel like HM... though they changed the game a lot... I liked it but it wasn't as deep of an experience.... A Wonderful Life was the last one I really liked... but it feels nothing like a HM game... still though I can respect it for what it is
@uglypinkmoose Save the Homeland was an amazing game for the most part, except how you could not play after you beat it, that was the only bad part. As for AWL that was a fun game as well, but ya it didn't quite feel like it belonged in the series, but it was still fun. I think Magical Melody would be a bit better if it stuck to traditional graphics instead of trying to put it into animal crossing style
@Thejester1314 I didn't like Magical Melody at all... I thought it had some good ideas but overall was an ugly mess that just wasn't fun to play... in fact I think the energy bar deal was a horrible addition to the series... every game has it now and I never liked it... I liked what Magical Melody was trying to do... they just missed the mark by a long shot... which is sad because on paper it should have been amazing
@uglypinkmoose the energy bar was there from harvest moon 64, and maybe earlier but it just showed your guy doing actions like wiping his head with a hankie. The thing that got me was the graphics, I have no idea why but they just bugged me in magical melody. If they had of thought it out and had a little more feedback and stuff I think it would have been a good game, but ya, they missed their mark by a long shot, or at least I hope they didn't hit their mark
@Thejester1314 energy was always present but the bar works much differently
in the older games you go through stages...as you said it shows your guy getting tired... you can memorize the stages and know exactly when to stop... the energy bar however doesn't work this way... it drains way to fast and how much is going to drain is often unpredictable....as similar as the ideas are they do change gameplay a lot... I hated the graphics as well...especially the dude with his big ass lol
@uglypinkmoose haha ya I bought magical melody cause it was like ten bucks and started it up and the first thing I noticed was my guys big ass...its bugs me REALLY badly... but ya I hate how even picking something up now makes your stamina bar go down, they should stick to the original game play mechanics, although I am interested in The Grand Bazaar, that looks like it might be okay
@Thejester1314 ya it makes him look like a goofy character rather than a cool little dude... I don't normally buy handhelds so I tend to avoid looking at the games on them ;D I have seen a little bit of Bazaar but not much
@uglypinkmoose I had friends of mineral town, and that one hooked me to hand helds, and sadly it was the best, the ones for DS aren't too bad, but not nearly as fun as friends of mineral town. The ones for GBC where pretty fun as well
@chakrashoes I kinda agree but you know I actually likes hm: magical melody for the game cube...but ya...all pretty much down hill from the 64...I LIVED for this game!
@chakrashoes LOL i think I remember this one...you can like expand the house and litterly take a dump and take a piss, it makes the sounds too. I found that to be so freaking funny at the time LOL.
@chakrashoes I know the comment is like a year old, but Animal Parade for the Wii is actually a pretty damn good HM game. I know someone who loved HM64 to death and said AP displaced it as her favorite HM game. Can't blame you for not liking A Wonderful Life though.
@mouserichi AWL actually got me into the series 6 years ago (7 in March-April). Only way I can play this game is through Emulator. And I admit, it's a great game so far.
That sucks, dude. I just found the game last night at my grandparent's house. (Problem is, I overplayed it so much that the game has a 50% chance of not working when I turn it on.) Honestly 64 was my favorite HM game. All the ones after it slowly started to loose the true spirit of the game in my opinion.
I lost this cartridge a while back, but spent MONTHS of my life glued to this absolute gem of a game.
One of the first games - along with Ocarina - that really generated a profound emotional experience, especially towards the end. I think my favorite moment was the fireworks show...
Oh god...

Thejester1314 1 year ago
@Thejester1314 ya it makes him look like a goofy character rather than a cool little dude... I don't normally buy handhelds so I tend to avoid looking at the games on them ;D I have seen a little bit of Bazaar but not much

@uglypinkmoose I had friends of mineral town, and that one hooked me to hand helds, and sadly it was the best, the ones for DS aren't too bad, but not nearly as fun as friends of mineral town. The ones for GBC where pretty fun as well
Thejester1314 1 year ago
@Thejester1314 ya and Mineral Town is just a port of Back to Nature on the playstation which is my favorite HM

All the ones after it slowly started to loose the true spirit of the game in my opinion.

really? i think HM is one of the very few series that actually stays good with each release.

HM Back to Nature PS1 was awesome same thing like the N64 one, but better.
HM AWL SE PS2 is a awesome too, but it have lame Festival and a crappy ending.

I used to play Back To Nature. Most fun I've ever had playing a video-game, haha. 6th grade was great.

I lost this cartridge a while back, but spent MONTHS of my life glued to this absolute gem of a game.
One of the first games - along with Ocarina - that really generated a profound emotional experience, especially towards the end. I think my favorite moment was the fireworks show...

Where'd you find this? Galbadia Hotel doesn't have HM64's music

Even ten years after playing this game I still have this theme stuck in my head.
It's a note higher in there but it is still on loop.
