  • the people there are probably like, "damn this is the best guitarist the world has seen"

  • It is not Duane's burst. Derek owns this 1959 LP. Duane's Tobacco burst is in the RRHF. His Goldtop is owned by someone else as well.

  • @Ratsonic. Derek is Butch Trucks' nephew not his son. His dad is Butch's brother.

  • every guitar player is a collector

  • Who would have thunk, Butches son the guitarist extraordinaire

  • @Ratsonic Derek is his nephew.

  • For anyone who cares, this is the guitar in the video:

    burstserial. com/gallery/main.php?cmd=album&var1=1959%2F9+1880%2F&var2=2

The video doesn't show the flame very well but the markings below the tailpiece are clear indicators.

  • lp looks gold top..

  • When every note counts!

  • So where is the entire song LOSER!

  • would LOVE to "see/Hear" this whole performance always Loved Loser anyone Kow where I could get it from?

  • All right who missed the like button? Because there is no way someone could not appreciate this!!!

  • amazing guitar slide.....

  • DEREK TRUCKS IS EASILY THE BEST GUITAR PLAYER THAT EVER WALKED ON A RATDOG STAGE. WEIR JUST COULD NOT PUT TOGETHER A GOOD BAND AFTER KINGFISH SPLIT UP

  • they're playing Loser

  • @grantbeavers thanks

  • he doesnt play a les paul very often but god it creates such a different great sound. does anybody know the song that they're playing?

  • Bobby ''ace'' could learn some slide work from derek because he never was that good of a slide player even though he taught himself onstage back in '79 and boy was that tough on the ear's.

  • GUITAR GOD!!! Can't wait for Thursday

  • Even with a different guitar and a little different sound... close your eyes and you know exactly who's playing.

  • Derek Trucks shreds it! Best video I've seen of him (not to mention I love this song).

  • @InfinityOE name of the song please!

  • @johnbeloe This song is Loser performed at Red Rocks on 8/30/2008 by Bob Weir and Ratdog featuring Derek Trucks, who played with the Allman Brothers Band later that night.

  • @InfinityOE

I guess there isn't any studio version with derek trucks?

or maybe proper audio from this live performance?

If you know anything, feel free to share :)

    Thnx...

I 've been searching on the internet to find this songs name for a long time.

  • @MariosTsak Oh no... I'm sorry I didn't specify. This is originally a Jerry Garcia song (off of his "Garcia" album), but was popularized when he and the Grateful Dead played it live. Bob Weir was the rhythm guitarist for the Grateful Dead, and Ratdog also only plays Grateful Dead related material. It just so happens that the Allman Brothers and Ratdog were on tour together.

  • @InfinityOE

Too bad. Great song! But this guy took the solo part to a whole other level. It sounds magical even through this horrible audio from this video, luckily it exists thought.

    thanks anyway.

  • @MariosTsak This video isn't the best quality, but I'll agree that this is one of the best solo's I've ever heard. If you don't mind me asking, what were you referring to when you said "too bad"?

Here's a link to the whole song if you're interested (track 4): archive.org/details/rd2008-08-30.c42-sto2.flac16 (((Much better quality than this video also)))

  • @InfinityOE Hey, this link doesn't work but I would love to download the track/whole show

  • @thenut8522 I double checked and that is the correct link so I don't know what to say. Try going to archive.org and looking up "Bob Weir and Ratdog 08-30-08 Red Rocks"... You should be able to find it.

  • he sounds better with the SG. this however is still godly

  • Comment removed

  • john mcain lookin ass in the background at the begining

  • That doesn't sound like his usual Open E Tuning. Does anybody know what it is?

  • @Pandolin11 he is in open E, hes using the bridge pick up which he almost never does, hence the sound with more highs in it.

  • @Danjd1 Thanks. I never noticed that. Haha.

  • That was beautiful. Kid kills it on any guitar just about. He has to be one of the most talented players, if not the, in the world.

  • Wish there were more vids of him playing the Burst.

  • Anyone know the name of this jam?

  • @jsl209 It sounds like a jam in Loser to me

  • @jsl209 Loser

  • Derek trucks Rules!!!

  • Derek sounds fine with this LP, I don't know why all the hate

  • defininitely Loser jam

  • 59 or not -this guitar doesn´t sound too good for me. At least on this vid.

Derek sounds much better with his SG´s!

  • Beautiful guitar, but I agree; The SG sounds better.

  • I want more of this video.... thank you so much for posting - I am addicted to this particular YouTube video.

  • sick fucken Deal. thank you Derek.

  • Thats his 1959 burst, such a beautiful guitar, and he deserves it.

  • how do u know he has a 59? thats great but he would of had to recently acquired it.

  • I know its serial number is 9-1880 and that it was on loan to him from Spencer Kirkpatrick, so I'm not completely sure if he bought it from him or not. Point is, thats a 59 burst, not a gold top like some people on here suggested. Really cool guitar!

  • @ferrarimk13

How are you able to tell the year?

  • @dahudge14 You can't really tell the year just by looking at it, but most 1959 bursts are easily recognizable because there are so few so most of them are pretty famous. It's pretty much the only Les Paul he'll bring out to play most of the time.

  • @ferrarimk13

But you can't tell by the color or something? Or are you just assuming that he's a badass, and he was probably gifted with a guitar given to badasses? I love the honey bursts btw :D

  • @dahudge14 i could tell by its color. Most 1959 bursts have unique finishes that could help you identify them (by player usually).

  • @ferrarimk13 i doubt he would play a 59" outdoors

  • @donnymiller1978 He's a guitar player not a collector, he gets use out of it even outdoors I'm sure.

  • @donnymiller1978 That place is out west and dry as shit what would stop him?

  • @ferrarimk13 Really, thats the best looking real 59 I have seen. Your saying thats his REAL 1959 burst? I believe he has one but thats perfect shape.

  • @willeng84 It's Duane's!

  • @jsl209 Really!!!! That guitar is a REAL 59' and is DUANE ALLMANS? I believe you its just in immaculate shape for its age.

  • Its incredible how far derek has taken slide guitar playing

  • Buddy of Sonny.. With Sonny one of the Best!

  • Gotta love the Goldtop.

  • that is clearly not a goldtop

  • I concur... its a honeyburst or teaburst, and i cant see any flame or quilt.

  • you can never have too many guitar players on stage i say.

  • Is he using the PRS amps?

  • yeah, looks like it

  • That looks like his PRS head right behind him.

  • notice how he plays the harmonic at 1:05. rediculous.

  • loser is such a sick song

  • I find it odd that on this song he plays completly on the Bridge position, where he almost exclusively uses the neck position on his SG.

  • @joebrassmonkey Due to their thin body and light weight, SGs can have a lot more bite and spank than LPs, sometimes you can make them sound similar to a tele. Derek's neck PU sounds on his SG definately have spank and bite if he's going for it, so I think he was going for a similar sound by using the bridge PU on the LP

  • I Love the security gaurd in the back..he look like hes thinking..Fuk me who the hell is this guy and damn can he play..I mean hell fire hes good.." lmfao ..Derek id obviously the man ..my Youtube disclaimer..you fuks. Come see us in WNC Mr. Trucks ;-) Medley

  • finger picking slide guitarist...hard to play like him I dont see why people are even attempting it..un less you can really play

  • does anyone know what tuning Derek uses? Open? Standard? does he switch tunings a lot? I like his style a lot and wanna learn it

  • He's using Open E tuning and usually stays there.

  • any other tips?

  • Well he almost never uses a pick, and to give certain notes that extra omph, he actually sort of rakes all the strings, muting all of em, except the one he wants to play.

  • He also plays slide

  • I think I figured that one out on my own lol :P

  • wait.. thats an original 59 burst?

  • Yea, serial number 9 1880

  • Hrm now this sounds alot more like when I play slide on my fender, although I see hes still using p90s but it doesn't sound as warm as his collection of SG's, can anyone explain why?

  • he's using humbucker actually. He has humbuckers on all of his guitars except for the supros and dano's he plays. On this LP, he's using the bridge pickup, which tends to sound brighter, instead of the neck, which has a darker, warm tone. He uses the neck pickup on his SG's more often, thats why it sounds a bit deeper with the SG.

You can't say that this LP sounds bad though. IT is an original 59' burst. =]

  • Do they make humbuckers that look like P90s or somethin? Its totally throwing me off i thought P90s are rectangular and humbuckers are thin (at least they are on my fender)

  • On your fender, more than likley, they are single coil pickups., unless you have seymore duncan hotrails. I'll PM you more information about them, differences and such.

  • Hey thanks man for clearin that up

  • he's using his bridge pickup in this one. He is almost always using his neck pickup so thats why it sounds a little different.

  • If I remeber right Duanes Gold Top was Refinished, and did not have the pickguard. I know the picture your talking about. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the other LP was Dickeys during late 1970-71.

  • We are talking guitars here, not submachine guns.

  • Looks like you had some real shit seats

  • 1959 burst

  • it's the first time i see derek with a les paul,

it looks kinda odd when your used to seeing him with an sg

  • when i saw him he played the sg and then a 1958 silvertone artist

  • he uses the silvertone and severa other danelectro guitars for his sit down set. Rumor has it this 59' LP is a loan. He's been using pretty extensively with the allman brothers band.

  • this makes ratdog listenable.

  • Yeah. I've seen him playing a lot of Danelectro guitars, and the National Airline guitars. They were built for the style that he plays.

  • Nice Paul! Im glad he doesnt use a Strat, those things have sustain of a banjo.

  • Anyone know if Derek is using Duane's old goldtop? I have seen a video of him using it with Susan Tedeschi before but I dont know if he was borrowing it or if he owns it.

One of my favorite dead tunes, its nice to see Derek really follow the melody here and stay away from too many blues licks.

  • Not sure on that, but Duane's ex-Goldtop belongs to Dickey Betts since his passing. Is that right?

  • You mean Duane Allman?

  • who else? :D I believe that that Goldtop Dickey uses up to this day, is the same Duane Allman used. Anyone knows if that's true?

  • I'm talking about this GT here watch?v=G1jpQu6qR1E

    SeemsDicky uses another one sometimes.

  • Dicky had the goldtop before duane Died. Duane traded his gold Top for the Cherry burst LP, then traded that one to get the brwon burst LP, which was his last before his death. I doubt that is the same LP.

  • I saw a picture of Duane posing with both the Tobacco and the Cherry LP on a table, so maybe he didnt trade them.. or one of them is someone else's guitar.. well doesn't really matter I think hehehe

  • This video should have more plays- it's such a good jam. What's the name of this song?

  • it's a grateful dead tune called loser

  • Derek Trucks is such an amazing player, Jerry would've liked this alot. Standing on the Moon.

  • why cant i see the video

    ANY GUYS UP? B8

  • lovin teh slide, teh vide, and the 59 :D

  • Derek also used to play a Washburn about 8 years. This was when he was sponsored by them I think or just a Dicky Betts thing for him at the time.

  • derek on a tasty les paul-1st class!!

  • This was a great night for music. Ratdog started and then the Allman Brothers tore it up. Gov't Mule and Umphrey's McGee the next night was just as good, if not better.

  • such a different side of his playing. amazing artist

  • When the lights shine on it the right way, you can see a lot of scratches on the finish. I'll bet that is an original 58-60 Les Paul... not to mention the tone kind of gives it away too!

  • thats a nice 59

  • you aint kidding, anyone know if he owns it now or just a loaner?

    as for the playing....

it's like he's playing a whole different instrument he's just so far out there

    great video.

  • Word going around the les paul forum says its a reall 1959 les paul and derek trucks owns it .

  • oh yes, amen, this rocks completely, i've never heard this song as beautiful, would have loved to hear him jam with Jerry doing this

  • thank you for posting this. i've been wantinb to see/hear dt on a paul for a long time..and i knew he was playing them more lately.

what an amazing solo...so soulful! perfect!

  • Good to see Derek using a Les Paul!

  • This is the first time I've ever seen him playing one.

  • interesting he's using the bridge pickup for "Loser"

  • it is he's said numerous times he lives on the neck pickup, to me, it sounds more like a pedal steel due to is nasaly sound

  • anyone know where I can download this show?

  • Great footage. I was row 33 for the show so I did not see much. But it was a great show.

  • loved the show, great time.
