DEREK TRUCKS IS EASILY THE BEST GUITAR PLAYER THAT EVER WALKED ON A RATDOG STAGE. WEIR JUST COULD NOT PUT TOGETHER A GOOD BAND AFTER KINGFISH SPLIT UP
Bobby ''ace'' could learn some slide work from derek because he never was that good of a slide player even though he taught himself onstage back in '79 and boy was that tough on the ear's.
@johnbeloe This song is Loser performed at Red Rocks on 8/30/2008 by Bob Weir and Ratdog featuring Derek Trucks, who played with the Allman Brothers Band later that night.
@MariosTsak Oh no... I'm sorry I didn't specify. This is originally a Jerry Garcia song (off of his "Garcia" album), but was popularized when he and the Grateful Dead played it live. Bob Weir was the rhythm guitarist for the Grateful Dead, and Ratdog also only plays Grateful Dead related material. It just so happens that the Allman Brothers and Ratdog were on tour together.
Too bad. Great song! But this guy took the solo part to a whole other level. It sounds magical even through this horrible audio from this video, luckily it exists thought.
@MariosTsak This video isn't the best quality, but I'll agree that this is one of the best solo's I've ever heard. If you don't mind me asking, what were you referring to when you said "too bad"?
Here's a link to the whole song if you're interested (track 4): archive.org/details/rd2008-08-30.c42-sto2.flac16 (((Much better quality than this video also)))
@thenut8522 I double checked and that is the correct link so I don't know what to say. Try going to archive.org and looking up "Bob Weir and Ratdog 08-30-08 Red Rocks"... You should be able to find it.
I know its serial number is 9-1880 and that it was on loan to him from Spencer Kirkpatrick, so I'm not completely sure if he bought it from him or not. Point is, thats a 59 burst, not a gold top like some people on here suggested. Really cool guitar!
@dahudge14 You can't really tell the year just by looking at it, but most 1959 bursts are easily recognizable because there are so few so most of them are pretty famous. It's pretty much the only Les Paul he'll bring out to play most of the time.
But you can't tell by the color or something? Or are you just assuming that he's a badass, and he was probably gifted with a guitar given to badasses? I love the honey bursts btw :D
@joebrassmonkey Due to their thin body and light weight, SGs can have a lot more bite and spank than LPs, sometimes you can make them sound similar to a tele. Derek's neck PU sounds on his SG definately have spank and bite if he's going for it, so I think he was going for a similar sound by using the bridge PU on the LP
I Love the security gaurd in the back..he look like hes thinking..Fuk me who the hell is this guy and damn can he play..I mean hell fire hes good.." lmfao ..Derek id obviously the man ..my Youtube disclaimer..you fuks. Come see us in WNC Mr. Trucks ;-) Medley
Well he almost never uses a pick, and to give certain notes that extra omph, he actually sort of rakes all the strings, muting all of em, except the one he wants to play.
Hrm now this sounds alot more like when I play slide on my fender, although I see hes still using p90s but it doesn't sound as warm as his collection of SG's, can anyone explain why?
he's using humbucker actually. He has humbuckers on all of his guitars except for the supros and dano's he plays. On this LP, he's using the bridge pickup, which tends to sound brighter, instead of the neck, which has a darker, warm tone. He uses the neck pickup on his SG's more often, thats why it sounds a bit deeper with the SG.
You can't say that this LP sounds bad though. IT is an original 59' burst. =]
Do they make humbuckers that look like P90s or somethin? Its totally throwing me off i thought P90s are rectangular and humbuckers are thin (at least they are on my fender)
On your fender, more than likley, they are single coil pickups., unless you have seymore duncan hotrails. I'll PM you more information about them, differences and such.
If I remeber right Duanes Gold Top was Refinished, and did not have the pickguard. I know the picture your talking about. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the other LP was Dickeys during late 1970-71.
he uses the silvertone and severa other danelectro guitars for his sit down set. Rumor has it this 59' LP is a loan. He's been using pretty extensively with the allman brothers band.
Anyone know if Derek is using Duane's old goldtop? I have seen a video of him using it with Susan Tedeschi before but I dont know if he was borrowing it or if he owns it.
One of my favorite dead tunes, its nice to see Derek really follow the melody here and stay away from too many blues licks.
Dicky had the goldtop before duane Died. Duane traded his gold Top for the Cherry burst LP, then traded that one to get the brwon burst LP, which was his last before his death. I doubt that is the same LP.
I saw a picture of Duane posing with both the Tobacco and the Cherry LP on a table, so maybe he didnt trade them.. or one of them is someone else's guitar.. well doesn't really matter I think hehehe
This was a great night for music. Ratdog started and then the Allman Brothers tore it up. Gov't Mule and Umphrey's McGee the next night was just as good, if not better.
When the lights shine on it the right way, you can see a lot of scratches on the finish. I'll bet that is an original 58-60 Les Paul... not to mention the tone kind of gives it away too!
the people there are probably like, "damn this is the best guitarist the world has seen"
kevinanthony87 1 month ago
It is not Duane's burst. Derek owns this 1959 LP. Duane's Tobacco burst is in the RRHF. His Goldtop is owned by someone else as well.

For anyone who cares, this is the guitar in the video:
burstserial. com/gallery/main.php?cmd=album&var1=1959%2F9+1880%2F&var2=2
The video doesn't show the flame very well but the markings below the tailpiece are clear indicators.
