@lisasimpson Nope, I now live in Georgia, since my company I work for decided to relocate its world headquarters from Ohio to GA. UGH! IDK why we dont understand that a tax increase is useful for all, when necessary, or why our President (and all the others involved) cant seem to understand how to manage a country for the people. Our generation is going to get all the BS from these older folks narrow assed minds. I'd rant, but then I'd sound stupid, because I'm very upset about all this.
@blaknoizee Oooh I'm from Ohio. Another wacky state, eh? My advice is take a deep breath or five and think about daisies and sunshine and puppies for a bit. We are so powerless to change things, at least in the immediate, so don't fret too much!!
@lisasimpson I'ma fret, because it's nonsense! And I personally like Ohio, since I've lived in KY, NJ, GA. But my ultimate locale is to be a NH resident. Live Free or Die baby!
Wow, what the deuce? I didn't hear anything about this when it happened. Don't know why. Even if it was only for a few hours, the fact that the whole state was shutting down is scary as hell.
And you think Michigan drivers are bad? Come to Wilmington...if you dare...
as much as it pains me.. I'm being left with no other choice but to leave the state... Michigan was home, but it seems Heir Granholm, and stunts like this one are only gonna multiply. The once manufacturing capital of the world is gone, and it's a damn shame. There was a time when you could have anything in the world made within 45 minutes of the intersection of I-75 and I-696... I still dont know what the Hell happened... and I'm sorry to have to leave...
I may be right behind you. Me and my wife both got laid off, there's no jobs here. We are looking to leave before our savings runs out. Hopefully we can find work in the SW.
I live in Michigan and I hadn't even noticed this. lol I only read/watch national news and I live in a resort area that thrives regardless of the state economy. Well thank God they got it sorted out!
Those in charge who are responsible for surplus spending and non-conservation of funds during economic hard times should be strung up by their nuts to make examples these political gangsters. We have the same problem in Jersey but no one seems to care.
OMG its economic meltdown, I hope they can salvage it before a total shutdown, starting an economy is like starting a cold reactor. Thousands of people will be effected. it will be like eire during the 80's.
It's not like were the only state that came close to a shut down. New Jersey had a WEEK LONG shutdown last year! Look it up and look up the history of Michigan, we are THE AUTOMOTIVE capital! If GM, FORD AND CHRYSLER are challenged then so are we.
I am from Michigan and no offense taken; Michigan is a socialist state. This whole event was a joke. Most people don't even know what "services" the state is providing. The Governor wanted her income and sales tax increase. The governor chose which programs to suspend during this impasse. Cigarettes and liquor? The state has successfully inserted itself in every transaction in everyday life and it's unacceptable. Plus, Michigan reps in DC are ineffective at returning our Federal Tax dollars.
The sales tax has been 6% for at least the past 10 years. They introduced a 6% service tax and a one percent increase in state income tax.
The history? Engler (the previous MI Governor) cut taxes or 30 times totaling $20 BILLION dollars of lost state revenue - compound that with increased competition in the auto industry, and the result is Michigan's economy.
About five or so years ago, the FEDERAL Government shut down, because they couldn't agree either. They did close all the Federal state parks. It lasted a few days.
Wow, 6 percent state sales tax. It's just 8.25 here in Texas. Of course we don't have that pesky state income tax though. So it probables equals out, huh? Well, except we're not closing our state. No state police. Well it's probably a good thing you can own a gun to protect yourselves.
I know that is serious but it's so funny "okay Michigan shut down all engines repeat shut down all engines" WTF? never heard diddley about it on UK news, strange so very strange >:(
geezzzz, i watch alot of news, and i didnt hear of any of this going on,, thx for the info,, and get while you can...next will be the gas stations,, oh wait, nevermind,, they are making a killin...lol
Gosh, Beccah, if it weren't for you, I would be clueless. Thank you, I guess. I am sure some of those big Ford execs will have to reach deep into their corporate pockets to undo the mess they helped to create, huh? I'm coming for a visit this weekend. Should be interesting by then.
This is crazy stuff Beccah, I hadn't heard of this, considering I am 2 hours from the border you think I would of, guess I've been out of the loop lately. I'm gonna flick on the Detroit news and get up to date. I hope everything works out, Be well, Tom.
Holy shit. This is actually true! Could this be the first of many states? Is this the start of another great depression? TAKE NOTICE: This is a direct effect of outsourcing. This is a direct effect of Big Money influencing politics.
I've never heard of anything like this. Do residents have to leave their homes? Do county hospitals shut down? Does the state break up and surrounding states adapt the land and residents? Wow. I'll have to read up on this.
Oh, btw. I quit smkoing. 3 days free now. Go J.R. =)
I used to live in Brighton Michigan but moved away about 5 years ago. When I lived there before the government shut down for a couple days but nothing really closed. I still went to school and cops still issued tickets.
Unfortunately it's much worse this time. Michigan needs to lay off the auto industry and work on bringing tech jobs in. They also need to cut many of their social services. You should be kind of excited though... this is the closest we're going to get to anarchy (not the pipe-bomb throwing kind so don't worry too much).
My initial thoughts were that it'd be a good time for an anti-war rally but by the sound of them revoking access to state property, it'd probably just end with a bunch of people pleading with Blackwater to not taze them... bro.
w..w.. what the F&%! I dont understand how this can be possible. And why isn't the Federal gvmt. stepping in to help? how can they allow sumthing like medicare or police to be unavailable. I am speechless
So so glad I'm not a Michigandan right now. No taxation without representation; what a good job you're all doing with our former colony. How proud you must be making the Founding Fathers.
I'm not one of the Founding Fathers so can't comment on that. I think it's screwed that money comes into so much. Hopefully you'll get through this crisis safely.
This happened in the state I live in a few years ago. Honestly/luckily, on a personal level, the only way it directly affected me was that I could not get lottery tickets (which may have been a good thing). The shutdown will probably be brief. It's more of a pressure tactic.
I like the scratch offs too. And I can tell you that they will NOT sell you anything, even the ones they have in stock. It will be a complete freeze until the state is back up and running.
I've seen it before at both the state and the federal level. It's how the executive branch puts pressure on the legislative branch...make the people suffer until they fix it, and the government really does save a few bucks because the employees never do get paid for those days they were sent home.

so this never happened before? it is strange, but from that list you read at the end, it seems like it's a "regulated" thing, like there was a law that said "in case there's no budget, the state shuts down and this is what you have to do". like they actually thought about it and legislated it.

their economy can't be that bad tho.. don't they build all the cars there?
I don't watch West Wing, but it's actually playing out in Michigan right now!!
Yes, we build a lot of cars, but the car companies are losing a LOT of money right now. And a lot of other industries are pulling out of Michigan with not a lot of jobs coming back in. Worst unemployment rate in the nation! :(
