  • i remember this part really well from when i was a child.....its the only part i remember really well actually lol

  • my favorite childhood movie, when i was little Unico's tranformation use to make all happy and i would cry!...lol

  • The Sphinx is the best goddamn character that has ever graced Unico, besides Kuruku.

  • i've missed that Trojan Horse like an old friend.

  • Am I the only one who thinks the Trojan Horse sounds like George Takei?

  • There's someone named Marten Ferret and Shorty Squirrel bickering in the comments... sounds like the plot of a cartoon movie to me ;)

  • Unico changing into a Pegasus is the best moment in an anime ever.

  • when and if i get keldeo in pokemon b/w, im soooooo naming it unico.

  • ok i dont get Unico's transformation he has a little black shiny nose but then it go's away, his ears resamble something like a monkeys.. then there horse ears, and his hair is short and red.. then its white and long??... what the heck?? >_<

  • "The Trojan Horse?" Yup, you'll learn about trojans when you are over 18 honey

  • Horses are notorious for being badly animated in a LOT of animation past and present... but I think the animation for Unico in his adult form is absolutely beautiful. Please would-be animators, take a lesson and stop ruining the horse in animation! Only other animation where it did the horse justice was The Last Unicorn and Spirit...

  • @hananokoe i havn't seen many other animations then those with horses in them thow.

  • is that baby sphinx a boy or a girl? can't make heads or tails lol.

    yep they're nuts but determined.

  • @benaniman1 the baby sphinx is a girl because she's the sphinx's daughter.

  • @benaniman1 I wanna say female. o 3o

  • I loved this so much as a child, and I still love it~ <3

  • but why can,t unico fight the magic

  • nice movie

  • But where is she going?

To the End of the Earth..

  • Everyone in this movie is selfish. "We have to save my mother and father" - forget the thousands of other people turned into Tetris pieces. The Nights reject couldn't bear to turn his sister into a Tetris piece because 'she is only a child', yet he had no reservations about the other children comprising the walls of the bigbad's castle. The Heathcliff extra doesn't seem to care about anyone but himself. We can't pardon the bigbad's selfishness because his agenda makes no sense. Unico? Unlikable.

  • @MartenFerret FartenMerret }:p haterizing poor Unicoz?!

  • @Sheilaaliens Unico's character underwent a complete 180 in this movie. Sure, the West Wind erases his memories, but being nice comes naturally to Unico. This movie forgot that, and so Unico doesn't even TRY to make peace with the bigbad... At least not until he was told kindness was the means by which one could KILL him. ...So then we wonder - is Unico being his nice little self, or is he genuinely trying to kill the bigbad? We don't care either way because we don't relate to either.

  • @MartenFerret Touche on the break-down, touche... I guess its a matter of what message you are willing to get from the movie, more than one over-all message can be perceived, some good and some sinister- either way you gotta admit, there are many layers to the Unico movies :D hella heavy once the child grows up and says "WTF was that crazy ish i was watchin?!"

  • @Sheilaaliens I respond to movies on a superficial level - I'm more concerned with how the story is told and how the characters develop. If I'm to care enough about a movie to 'look' for its symbolism, then the film has to appeal to me on said superficial level.

Had we (the audience) knew about Kuruku's plight, we might care about him. Since we don't learn his back story until 3/4 of the movie, we can't care; esp. seeing as the movie TRIES to be mysterious despite our need to know what's up..

  • @MartenFerret Mind telling me why your criticizing a kids film as if it were one made for adults? All that you've griped about so far are things the audience this film was intended for wouldn't understand or even care about. Take a hint from Roger Ebert: a film should be judged by virtue of its intended audience. UITIOM is a 1980s kids anime film. It should be judged according to the standards of kids films of its era and genre. IMO it holds up pretty well.

  • @ShortytheSquirrel And as we all know, kids aren't intelligent enough to appreciate good writing. I suppose that's why The Lion King failed.. Wait. Now, we both know that's wrong.

You're of the type who believes that if it's for kids, all it needs to be is tame and cute (so Mom can relax by letting the TV play babysitter). I'm of the weird breed which doesn't believe children should be talked down to by people or TV/movies.

  • @MartenFerret You claim to not believe in talking down to children, and yet that is exactly what you are doing! You presume that their standards for what may constitute a good film are not valid and that you are a better judge of good entertainment then they are. I have to reiterate that you are NOT the intended audience. Children are and if their standards seem simplistic or shallow to us, we shouldn't care because we're not the ones this film was made for. Let kids be kids.

  • @ShortytheSquirrel Your comment makes as much sense as this senseless movie. I think you're the one not giving the intelligence of children credit. You've devalued their standards to "Oh, look-it the cute unicorn! Oh, there's the mean kitty! Unicorn!" Kids can judge for themselves, thankfully. If they left it to you to make the decisions for them as to what constitutes good TV viewing, they'd be staring at a test screen.

  • @MartenFerret My whole point is that I am not judging the standards of children because they are obviously different from adults. If children want to watch something you deem "unintelligent" then they should be able to do so. It isn't up to me, you or anyone else to decide what constitutes good children's entertainment. They can do that on their own.

  • @ShortytheSquirrel You must be an awesome parent. So if your kids deem a triple-X-rated film as good entertainment, you'd get it for them? After all, they're a better judge of programming than you are.

  • @MartenFerret The intended audience for a triple-X-rated film (such a classification doesn't exist btw) is not children. UITIOM IS for children and children will ultimately decide for themselves if it is a good film because the film is made specifically FOR THEM. Seriously, how hard is this to understand.

  • @ShortytheSquirrel Fair enough. But then, how does one determine whether a film is for children? By the rating? Debatable, but we'll leave it.

So, I've lost my right to critique this film because it's a kid movie and I'm not a kid? Ok.

What about those who write material for kids movies/TV shows? I can certainly as I'm sitting here evaluate their efforts/skill (neither went into this movie) and determine thereby whether my kids SHOULD watch this tripe. My verdict? No!

  • @MartenFerret You haven't lost your right to critique anything. It's HOW your critiquing this film that is the problem. Film criticism is subjective. A film needs to be judged with its intended audience in mind. Film critics evaluate hundreds of children's films each year and the central question underpinning all of their reviews is "would a child like this"? They then go on to explain why/why not children would like the film. Secondly, you should let your kids decide what they like.

  • Comment removed

  • @ShortytheSquirrel In my household, the adults make the decisions as to what the children can watch. If a movie is extremely stupid/plotless/etc., I'm not buying it. Would a child like this?Sure! Would a child not like this? Of course!

Kids like stories and characters to make sense/be believable. At least the kids I know do.. Maybe the ones you know have lower standards?

  • @MartenFerret For someone who claims that children should not be talked down to or treated as unintelligent your methods seem to speak otherwise. Essentially you are saying in this comment "children don't know what they want so its up to me to decide for them". I couldn't disagree more. Let your children become their own film/TV critic. You might want to ask yourself the next time you go to buy a video whether you are buying for your own entertainment or for your kids.

  • @ShortytheSquirrel Very nice try. Very nice indeed, but unfortunately, I've a little more sense than to take your reply seriously.

    Let's analyze it:

I never said children don't know what they want, I said children (generally) tend to favor stories that make sense. If a grown man cannot make heads or tails of it, why is it worth considering?

My own entertainment? That would be Unico! XD I love making fun of tripe such as this.

  • @MartenFerret "Would a child like this?Sure! Would a child not like this? Of course!"

Seems to me this is saying children will like/dislike anything arbitrarily. Which implies they don't really know what they want. Unless you meant something else at which you can explain what you really meant.

"If a grown man cannot make heads or tails of it, why is it worth considering?"

Because it's not for a grown man, its for children. BTW, ever heard of a little story called Alice in Wonderland?

  • @ShortytheSquirrel The first bit means there's a fan for/of anything, including Unico.

You have to help your kids make decisions, seeing as it's your responsibility to mold them. They don't have to like the movies I choose for them, and I don't have to like whatever trendy kid flick they're expected to see. However, when it comes to obscure, odd films such as Unico (or controversial Disney garbage), I evaluate it before my kids do.

    ...And yes. Yes I have.

  • @MartenFerret I don't believe its my responsibility to mold them at all. They need to become their own man/women. I can certainly influence them but that is as far as it goes. They will make good/bad choices. I will give my two cents worth and then hope for the best. Children need to be left to grow up, not brought up. But that's my opinion on parenting anyway.

Then you know Alice in Wonderland makes absolutely no sense and yet it is a children's classic. Disney controversial?

  • @ShortytheSquirrel We're stalemate. Been there, in fact.

Alice in Wonderland made sense in that it didn't (which was the point - Carrol had a penchant for logic, syllogisms, and the like. The Disney film didn't translate the idea well.

...We're not discussing Disney. Not here. You can PM me if you want to, though

  • @MartenFerret You could just explain how Disney is controversial. To me they're the 4kids of animation companies in that they go out of there way to sugar coat everything. Bar "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and some sequences from their earlier films, they're far from controversial imo. Heck, Astro Boy, another Tezuka creation (who is also creator of Unico) is more controversial than Disney ever was. I'd like to see some examples of Disney's controversy then we can discuss them via PM.

  • @ShortytheSquirrel Sending you a PM.

  • @ShortytheSquirrel User shortythesquirrel has enabled friend lock. You will not be able to send messages to them unless they add you as a friend.

Nice try. I'm not your friend, nor will I ever be.

  • @MartenFerret Friend lock is used so conversations can be kept private. It has nothing to do with real friendship. We both know nothing about each other. Don't be so naive.

  • @ShortytheSquirrel I won't friend you on principle. Anyhow: Scott Johnson. I can't stand that man, but he raises some questions about Disney and its ethics/morals. He has videos here. I cannot link them through comments.

  • @MartenFerret Principal? Disney is fluff. Much of its morality/ethics relies on well meaning but clichéd platitudes. How is that controversial? The only Disney film to broach complex moral issues is the Hunchback of Notre Dame. In my experience most people who find questionable material in children’s films are actively looking for it which defeats the purpose of being “offended” in the first place. Though all things considered, the morality police never were very rational to begin with.

  • @ShortytheSquirrel Then you don't wish to discuss it? Fair enough.

  • @MartenFerret If you can give some examples of questionable content in Disney films then I'd be willing to analyze them and see if they hold up.

  • @ShortytheSquirrel You realize you're in a trap, right?

  • @MartenFerret What I realize is that your avoiding backing up your claims. Just post the comments here. If you have more to say then the character limit will allow then just post multiple comments. Or you could just swallow your pride and friend me so we can discuss the issue at length and in private. You can always un-friend me later.

  • @ShortytheSquirrel I'm not avoiding anything. You adopted the Disney topic from oe of my comments in which I referenced it only for emphasis. You grew weary of Unico, which is supposed to be the topic of discussion.

You say it's a kid's film, therefore only the kids can evaluate it on the level it needs to be evaluated. I disagree. Nothing left to say.

Disney: I very likely have different standards than you do. If it's wrong to me, it my not be to you. Non-argument. Relativism back at you.

  • @MartenFerret I never said adults could not evaluate children's films. As I said, film critics do this on a regular basis. What I DID say was that as adults, we need to evaluate children's films with their audience in mind. You've made this same mistake twice in a row now even though I've already corrected you on it.

The claim of questionable content is not subjective. The content of any film is governed by its rating, which it either complies with or it doesn't.

  • @MartenFerret Cut her some slack. It's only natural for anyone to think about their own loved ones first and foremost, especially a child. I'm sure she wants to help the other people too.

  • @Wright805 I'm not that generous. ...I'm also not reliving my critique of this movie. Further posts will be read, but not replied to.

  • Sphinx sure is funny saying "yaba! yaba!" anyways Shery is so brave that she will not give up for she is going to the end of the earth to find this horse but its a very long way and Shery doesnt want Unico to suffer. But Unico doesnt want Shery to suffer either for he transformed into the beautiful Unisus to get get there in no time ^_^

  • Thanks for the post.

  • "Am I Really that filthy?"

"You bet you are. You're disgusting!" Lol

The little sphinx sure has a mouth on her, but one can't help laughing at her frankness. The inflection in that line is just priceless

  • Hahaha :-)

  • lol, looks like Murakami's art XD

  • wow i haven't seen this film since i was a little kid this is probably the best anime I've ever seen in my life. I'm going to order this on amazon as soon as I'm done watching it.

  • Heh...my mom never liked Unico because there was "too much yelling" in it. I can see what she means now, watching this 22 years later :p

  • sphix, unicorns, trojen horses what else xD

  • the golden age of anime.

  • omg, puppets walking into the ocean, and "walking to the end of the earth", i think after I was done looking for the first Unico, i was searching for the 2nd Unico as well. I didn't know what movie from my memories i was looking for but i think this is it. =D

  • Unico turned into The Last Unicorn.XD

  • Heh, the little Sphinx got washed up on shore a couple times, why does that say about her?

  • I like Unico better in his pegasus like form

  • @MenrowSpirit

I do too. Why can't he just stay like that?

  • One of my favorite scene3s from this movie, just classic :)Wish I could have an adventure like this :)

  • how much mythology are we going to go through?

  • Boy, that Sphynx is a B**CH

  • Thank you for sharing this It's one of my childhood favs!!!

  • when I was a little kid I allways thought that the end of the earth allways existed.

  • Haha, I'm so happy I've finally seen all of Unico. I never got to see this as a child but even so I love it now and I'm tellin all my friends about it. I just love the Baby Sphynx (Sorry, I forgot her name). I'm just so sad for Unico.

  • ah the memories, thanks for the upload, so nostalgic, a pretty great anime for being an 80s dub, while some stuff ended up being cheesey the way some scenes were handled leaves them as beautiful as the original like the scene where Unico is flying.

  • So Koruko used to be a puppet? Oh the Irony!

  • lol @ 6:10

"Cherri: Why is there so much old junk here?

Marusu: Because it's the end of the Earth!... All the things that nobody wants gets washed up here!

*Marusu promptly gets washed over by a large wave* "

Hahaha, never really caught that in my childhood days watching this. :)

  • You know...in retrospect...it would have been faster to just wait for the sphinx to come home from visiting her friends than to walk for years and years to get to the Trojan Horse. Just saying.

  • It is absolutely amazing, and makes me almost teary-eyed that Unico changes when someone really loves him, and he really loves them. Even more so to think that he is constantly moved from one place to another and forgets everything that happened. All because the gods have a bee in their bonnets about his gift to make everyone around him happy. I love these films, thank you so much for posting them!

  • Well his powers are fueled by emotion, although I don't get how he changes into a unicorn-pegasus; I always thought unicorns had just horns and were magical, and pegasii were the ones that could fly... but whatever.

And there in lies the juxtaposition for multiple stories in the Unico universe, even though it is unfair that the little guy is given sitcom amnesia and is forced into multiple adventures, sometimes similar to the last, it proves to be very entertaining.

    Tezuka was a total genius.

  • "We're in trouble Sheri."

    NO. YA THINK? :P

  • Well, now I know. If the Sphinx-Who-Knows-Everything is not available to answer my questions, I should try the Trojan Horse-Who-Knows-Almost-Everything.

  • This movie is not a "bed of lies".. Unicorns can fly..Pegasus is a descendant of unicorns..Check your mythology. And many thanks to swaswj for posting Unico.. I absolutely love you for it, granted that this cartoon gave me nightmares as a child and is totally freaky now that I am adult. Thank you for posting it.

  • in the first one unico could talk when he was big, so why doesnt he tell her he is unico?

  • 2:49 - 3:30 is the only part of this movie I remember; since I last watched it when I was only 6 years old xD

  • i love it!!

  • How the hell does Sherry know when they've reached the end of the earth? Has she ever been there before?

  • As much as Marusu talks, I'm sure Cheri got the *whole* description as passed down from the Sphinx to her daughter.

  • Yes, it does seem like the Sphinx's daughter probably gave her the whole story, after all, it was a long ride.

  • Unico looked really weird when he was transforming in this movie, not graceful like the first Unico movie

  • I agree.

  • I agree.

  • Yahoo! First to comment. At this part, it just seems like Unico and Sherry are on a wild goose chase. The Sphinx's kid is very annoying.
