I love AMD, have an AMD Phenom 9950 as we speak.but IMO thy still need a chip thts just completely mind blowing to compete w/ the Intel i7.Thy need to really investigate a completely new way to bring this chip to life, such as research into new materials and manufacturing techniques that will make more efficient chips that perform better at equal clockspeeds..aka Intel's Nehalem.But thy cant jst make a Nehalem imitator,they need to start from scratch and build a competitor w/ 0 Intel influence.
AMD is working on its own Fabrication plant (FAB2) and when it is built and running, they will be ahead of the game over Intel. Currently AMD and Intel sub out their processor wafer making to Fab plants around the world, Fab 2 will be the first "Processor Company" owned plant, meaning they can exclusively work with AMD and not worry about Intel. Ill prolly sell this 9950 on eBay for $50. Like you said, the Phenom II will drop right in this AM2+ board and the price/performance ratio is sweet even without overclocking to 4ghz. The primary reason I went AMD instead of Intel is the constantly changing sockets Intel likes to ambush people with. Plus I wanted maximum compatability with the 4870x2. I plan to pick up a second 4870x2 when the Phenom II 940 hits the market.

Intel pwns AMD from every angle. I've owned 2 intels and 3 amd's. It's sad really sad actually because AMD was so good for so long but all of a sudden for almost 3 years AMD can't keep up. I have two intel systems- and intel E8500 and Q6600 and both outperform any amd quad or dual- even with overclocking. PLus the intels seem to run way cooler allowing me to have my E8500 at 4ghz and my Q6600 at 3.825ghz both being air cooled. I sincerely hope AMD manages to rebound or they're history.
If it weren't for AMD Intel would still be making bad cpu's that cost a lot. Remember the days when AMD dominated the cpu industry, but then Intel had to copy off of AMD. The AM3 socket is for DDR3 support. DDR3 is taking over.
The AM3 CPUs will have an IMC compatible with both DDR2 and DDR3. The AM3 CPU will slot into an AM2 board just like AM2+ CPUs are backwards compatible. However, AM2/AM2+ CPUs will not work with the AM3 motherboard.
And like he said, Intel still has pins, just in the socket instead. AMD has socket F land grid array, they'd use something like it if there was a point. I don't think I've ever bent a pin on my CPUs.

AMD are now a damn sight richer than they were thanks to being bought (kind of) by a very rich international consortium. If they had adverts on TV there market share could raise dramatically. I personally think deneb chips will be better value than i7 because of overclocking potential, yeah intel chips are better now but AMD will be better value in the future.

Ill prolly sell this 9950 on eBay for $50. Like you said, the Phenom II will drop right in this AM2+ board and the price/performance ratio is sweet even without overclocking to 4ghz. The primary reason I went AMD instead of Intel is the constantly changing sockets Intel likes to ambush people with. Plus I wanted maximum compatability with the 4870x2. I plan to pick up a second 4870x2 when the Phenom II 940 hits the market.

I agree though the Shanghai will be great for one reason that it allows AM2+ boards to run it with DDR2 memory.

The 9950 is Awesome, i have one and exept the TDP it's equal as a Q6600 !
The Deneb at 3.0Ghz should have a TDP under 125W (140W for the 9950@2.6Ghz), with a real performance gain.
That's sound like a salvation for AMD.

Intel pwns AMD from every angle. I've owned 2 intels and 3 amd's. It's sad really sad actually because AMD was so good for so long but all of a sudden for almost 3 years AMD can't keep up. I have two intel systems- and intel E8500 and Q6600 and both outperform any amd quad or dual- even with overclocking. PLus the intels seem to run way cooler allowing me to have my E8500 at 4ghz and my Q6600 at 3.825ghz both being air cooled. I sincerely hope AMD manages to rebound or they're history.

If it weren't for AMD Intel would still be making bad cpu's that cost a lot. Remember the days when AMD dominated the cpu industry, but then Intel had to copy off of AMD. I'm not attacking AMD, I honestly prefer them and their business tactics overall, its just that for their processors at this current time, they are being out performed by Intel generally. Just like AMD did in the AMD Athlon 64 bit era, when they first came out. I'm sure AMD will retake the performance crown one day!
And I agree with you, anyone who buys a $1500 CPU has major problems ;)

i have an AMD 64 X2 4200+ its a great cpu
ok it's not the firsted but it's so cheap and can be overclock quite a bit..
i would like to get the X4 9850 some day soon yes ok i would love an Intel Q6600 and overclock the hell out of it but Intel is more momey and there mobos say for a good overclocking one £150 + and most use DDR3.

The AM3 socket is for DDR3 support. DDR3 is taking over.
The AM3 CPUs will have an IMC compatible with both DDR2 and DDR3. The AM3 CPU will slot into an AM2 board just like AM2+ CPUs are backwards compatible. However, AM2/AM2+ CPUs will not work with the AM3 motherboard.
And like he said, Intel still has pins, just in the socket instead. AMD has socket F land grid array, they'd use something like it if there was a point. I don't think I've ever bent a pin on my CPUs.
