At the time (remember LIVE TV) this was a big deal.
Bill Grundy was GREAT, not at all a fool - he had a brilliant, ironic style, and could deal with politicians and the like simply because he was smarter than them.
On this occasion, thankfully, he (sort of) lost it. The result - an unforgettably revealing insight into the actuality of that time.
Thatcher arrived in '79 and the Pistols went to Heaven (jk).

They represented the end of Britain as a civilised country, And of course their manager was a fucking Jew..Malcolm McLaren!...anyone still in doubt as to why Germany got rid of their filthy Jews?

i like the fastidious disgust with which john lydon pronounces the word "drunk" when describing grundy. a bit unfair, considering the pistols were, by their own admission speeding off their heads. still, grundy was being a cunt.
It's a myth that this was a seminal 'punk' moment. As someone who grew up in seventies Britain, Steve Jones bravado is more akin to a seventies hooligan, a boot boy, a 24 carat yobbo than a punk. Look at the punks in the background, all sheepish, coy or quiet. Rotten muttering nervously under his breath. No! The earthquake that followed was created not by some ponced up art students and poseurs but by the uncouth yob in their midst.
It's high time that the surviving 'cast members' were reassembled to recreate this important piece of media history. The placement of key characters within an accurate studio reconstruction of the 1976 setting should be refilmed, with stimulating discussion of the events afterwards. Bill Grundy is unavailable, but a Tory MP or Brian Sewell could be brought in to take his place. The views from Lydon, Sioux, Jones, Matlock, Severin and the others in 2011 on this subject would make riveting TV.
you just can`t over-emphasise how this one interview changed the face of music in Britain for ever. I was 17 at the time; I came home from my tedious job, had my boring meal and plonked myself down in front of the tv for another night of rubbish tv. No-one EVER swore on tv, and as I watched the whole thing unravel in front of my eyes I was deeply impressed. These were just a bunch of drunk kids playing up to a rubbish presenter (who never worked again). I loved it.
Rotten should have gotten his boney ass out and done a steaming great turd right in Grundy's face------it would have been hilarious! [if not for Grundy].
@rabsmiff:We can see now, what kinda bastards parts of the media were+are+when having to watch the "show" of the Murdoch father+son broadcast on our German TV evening news, i wish British parliamentary investigation committees had more rights to punish such assholes like the Murdochs, who are just a greedy new-rich illiterate family with the "behaviour"of the scum where they come from.
I am "sorry for your loss" of News Of The World" in Britain and hope this will be a warning to other tabloids.
@Useless2112 He's trying to be ironic but Grundy fails because he says " by comparison" and that's an incorrect statement. You should read up on some of Richards' antics, makes the Pistols look like clean cut lads.
Interesting to note....Bill Grundy never worked again....The Sex Pistols however still have one of the greatest and most influntial albums in history to their name!
What a bunch of pseudo arty-cool-I don't give a fuck but I look like a rude punk rocker-guys... The pistols were a fuckin' joke; a bad British version of Richard Hell & The Voidoids.
@jino666able Yeah, It meant that something honest & original became stupid, fashionable & commercial because of those "rude punk kids". I love the bloody pistols, but they were just like The Monkees or the Troggs compared with Richard Hell, Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers, Wayne County, The Dictators or even Vic Godard & the Subway Sect... PiL was much better. Cheers cunt!
@johnniehell THE SEX PISTOLS never meant to make PUNK fashionable ,it just got out of control like most original things do. They were a perfect flip off to society and critics, I don't say it wasn't on purpose, but to compare them with THE MONKEES (corporate fake pop band) is just stupid :/
This band made one album, 30 minutes long. Influential perhaps, but they didn't last. How can you last if your emphasis is the art of being offensive. Dialog: "What if other people like Mozart and Beethoven" answer, "Well that's their tough shit." Meaning....what if other people like talent? Answer: (fill in the blank)
@dddolllyyy John Lydon, Steve Jones, Glen Matlock and Paul Cook (front row.) Steve Severin (bassist Siouxsie and The Banshees, Simon Barker, Simone Thomas and Siouxsie Sioux (back row.) Bill Grundy, pissed in his chair.
@LedZeppelin827 I think he was referring to the fact that the rolling stones originally wore suits, compared to the swastikas this group is blatantly garbed in.
sid snot and the rest of them facing up to grundy like anyone cared decontruction future susie sue no sensce of Amerivan Indians, they'd had several of 'em up against the walll somewn=here , once............apparently. They fired him after this
Check you all slagging of the fucking sex pistols without the sex pistols half the bands you see nowadays wouldnt have been formed. Ever heard of the clash? Yeah then you might not know no sex pistols no clash. ,And anyway Bill Grundy want very respectful eh.
the interviewer seemed pissed off at the pistols to begin with. no wonder the band picked up on bills mood and gave him salt for salt. lucky he didnt get flattened by the blokes.bloody dirty old man.com
When Grundy says 'oh shit' - hilarious. Head in hand, probably knew that was the end of his career right there, poor bloke. They're being childish, sure, but he's stirring them so fair play.
@coach9087 there not, they just put a swazstica (cant spell it) on there arms because thier rather rebellious. in nazi germany, they would be sporting the british flag. or the star of David... but then again, there not jewish, nor being particually prosecuted :P
@coach9087 Bad Brains lead singer HR was known to be rocking a swastika t-shirt in a bunch of their shows. Google them and you will realise how far that symbol had come from its nazi roots when being used in punk rock.
Aid wasn't in the band yet. Rotten is not a sell out if you actually looked into to it he only did imade the butter ad to get money for the pil tour and he said that himself.
only reason he did it is so he culd go on tour with pill so people like me tht actualy are intrested in the music can go see him coz he thinks live music is great
@trooperJac It shouldn't be forgotten what it in inspired. Great stuff like Crass, came out of this declaration. If Rotten did not fully understand or grasp what Reid, Westwood and Maclaren were feeding him, then at least it got others to sit up. I agree, Rotten is tedious but for 5 minutes he had something. I love that 76 interview he did where he declares that he does not need a mansion in the south of France. As it turned out, he was thinking more about a mansion in LA!
You've missed the point along with eleven other people. It seems like nothing to us now but this was the youth speaking out against social conformity in Britain. These boys re-purposed rock as an ideological weapon & they changed youth culture, especially in the music world so who gives a moo if he's selling butter!?
The ironic thing is, If it wasn't for them, you'd have still found something like this shocking!
@coopsacola Yeah I guess so - it looks tame by today's standards. It's easy to forget that things change.
I remember watching This is England, there's a scene where the young kids mother walks into the throng of the gang to tell them off and I'm thinking 'jeez she's gonna get killed here'. So what happened next surprised me but then I remembered youths were different back then.
Was it a change for the better though? Seems like most people are cunts nowadays!
Well in the case of music I would definitely say so. There was so much cool stuff came from this band - the Manchester music movement for instance. Watch the film 24hour Party people, you'll see what I mean. I understand what your saying about the 'cunts' though but I don't think you can hold the sex pistols responsible, more to do with 'happy hardcore' I think!
@coopsacola I felt that your comments were eloquent and quite true, but I'm especially impressed with your for coining the phrase, "Who gives a moo?" I'll have to use that one...
They weren't hippies or Communists- they didn't "sell out" because they didn't have an ideology that was against making money for themselves. They had a product, they wanted to sell it through shock value. Only 1 person ever had said "fuck" on British TV before that point- Kenneth Tynan in 1965. The Sex Pistols said it three times in 3 minutes. They did what they wanted to do, which was for the times, very shocking.
Can you imagine this on American TV at a 6-7pm show in 1976?
This is the best fucking moment in British TV, second to none. Bill Grundy deserved to have his sorry ass kicked by Steve for trying to hit onto Siouxsie. Fuck EMI Records for kicking them off the label after this interview, their loss - Virgin were laughing all the way to the bank but ironically they are now owned by EMI. Ahhh, to be in the music world..... :)
@classicrockhead1969 Dear, The Ramones where influenced by The Stooges & New York Dolls who where the precursors of Punk... Sex Pistols ruled, Ramones where more commercial!!
Fukk Ramones their music where funny and Punk is not supposed to be funny, is No Fun, antisocial, anarchist, angry, chaotic, anti establisment, decadent, no future...
@ThePENON nah nah, thats the sex pistols youre thinking of. although much of punk was a facade, totally fake. and that goes for the clash and the pistols, once you ignore the punk stuff you find the clash are a brilliant rock and roll band, and the sex pistols were.. well, nada.
@ThePENON traitors? hey man that hurts! ambiguous? so what. they dont owe anyone anything, they dont have to have a mission statement. and if anything could be classed as ambiguous it would be the shock tactics of the sex pistols. motives behind wearing a swastika anyone?
@classicrockhead1969 Punk was actually started in 1963 by The Kingsmen with "Louie Louie", the first rock song to get banned by radio. The Sex Pistols simply made it cool and okay for pop kids to like in the UK in the 70's.
@cyborghana you're right. They are really a cariacature of what punk really was. Green Day have now turned into a daytime AOR band for those who like Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac and the Doobie Brothers.
you dirty fucker

@trooperJac It shouldn't be forgotten what it in inspired. Great stuff like Crass, came out of this declaration. If Rotten did not fully understand or grasp what Reid, Westwood and Maclaren were feeding him, then at least it got others to sit up. I agree, Rotten is tedious but for 5 minutes he had something. I love that 76 interview he did where he declares that he does not need a mansion in the south of France. As it turned out, he was thinking more about a mansion in LA!

The sex pistols huge sell out was disappointing, yeah, but you have to realize how revolutionary they were. Besides, their music was great.

You've missed the point along with eleven other people. It seems like nothing to us now but this was the youth speaking out against social conformity in Britain. These boys re-purposed rock as an ideological weapon & they changed youth culture, especially in the music world so who gives a moo if he's selling butter!?
The ironic thing is, If it wasn't for them, you'd have still found something like this shocking!
coopsacola 1 year ago 34
@coopsacola Yeah I guess so - it looks tame by today's standards. It's easy to forget that things change.
I remember watching This is England, there's a scene where the young kids mother walks into the throng of the gang to tell them off and I'm thinking 'jeez she's gonna get killed here'. So what happened next surprised me but then I remembered youths were different back then.
Was it a change for the better though? Seems like most people are cunts nowadays!

@trooperJac

Very well said

@coopsacola also, john lyndon spent all of the money into reforming PiL, another fantastic band

Can you imagine this on American TV at a 6-7pm show in 1976?

grundy. more like grungy. he looked he was one fucking ignorant bastard who needed kicked in the face.
DrSquidley 1 year ago
This is the best fucking moment in British TV, second to none. Bill Grundy deserved to have his sorry ass kicked by Steve for trying to hit onto Siouxsie. Fuck EMI Records for kicking them off the label after this interview, their loss - Virgin were laughing all the way to the bank but ironically they are now owned by EMI. Ahhh, to be in the music world..... :)

@ThePENON i AGREE THAT tHE cLASH ISN'T REALLY PUNK, BUT tHE rAMONES INVENTED PUNK, tHE pISTOLS PERFECTED IT.
classicrockhead1969 1 year ago
@classicrockhead1969 Dear, The Ramones where influenced by The Stooges & New York Dolls who where the precursors of Punk... Sex Pistols ruled, Ramones where more commercial!!
Fukk Ramones their music where funny and Punk is not supposed to be funny, is No Fun, antisocial, anarchist, angry, chaotic, anti establisment, decadent, no future...
ThePENON 1 year ago
@ThePENON not supposed to be funny? what are you joking? for one, sex pistols lyrics are often funny

@louiecostello yEAAAH!! I iagree, you 're right, you 're right, but anyway the Sex Pistols were "The Best"
ThePENON 1 year ago
@ThePENON nah man, you're confusing the sex pistols with the clash there
louiecostello 1 year ago
@louiecostello The Clash naaaaah Fukkin commercial Clash!!
ThePENON 1 year ago
@ThePENON nah nah, thats the sex pistols youre thinking of. although much of punk was a facade, totally fake. and that goes for the clash and the pistols, once you ignore the punk stuff you find the clash are a brilliant rock and roll band, and the sex pistols were.. well, nada.
louiecostello 1 year ago
@louiecostello Sorry but I don't want to talk more with traitors!! The Sex Pistols were unique and unparalleled, The Clash were ambiguous shit!!
ThePENON 1 year ago
@ThePENON traitors? hey man that hurts! ambiguous? so what. they dont owe anyone anything, they dont have to have a mission statement. and if anything could be classed as ambiguous it would be the shock tactics of the sex pistols. motives behind wearing a swastika anyone?
louiecostello 1 year ago
@louiecostello Hi there. Says on Siouxsie's wikipedia that she worn one once to shock the bourgeoisie.
clayguy33 1 year ago
@classicrockhead1969 Punk was actually started in 1963 by The Kingsmen with "Louie Louie", the first rock song to get banned by radio. The Sex Pistols simply made it cool and okay for pop kids to like in the UK in the 70's.
fatpizzaman 1 year ago
@fatpizzaman that music in the 60s was called punk, but it bears little relation to the punk from london in the 70s
louiecostello 1 year ago
This is a real punk band. Unlike green day and blink 182. Damn I hate those bands,
cyborghana 1 year ago
@cyborghana you're right. They are really a cariacature of what punk really was. Green Day have now turned into a daytime AOR band for those who like Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac and the Doobie Brothers.
