I think it is a sign that the Don is overdoing it when Leporello's scream overlaps with his. I'm not sure who won for the Don... That was a pretty bad one from Raimondi, I have heard better from him. I think Leporello goes to Karl Christian Kohn for no attempt. He's just like "oh."
For some reason it seems that I cannot post a link in reply--but there is one great ROH production that someone has posted bits of, as well as the one he did with Feruccio Furlanetto as Leporello.
I completely agree about Furlanetto, but I just don't think Ramey is dynamic enough. He has a gorgeous voice, but he can't act! And I think that really shows in his Don--particularly the scream.
I would like other performances, but I grew up with Ramey as the Don, before that it was Richard Stilwell on the Amadeus soundtrack. Your first leaves a bigger impression.
Speaking of Amadeus, I wish I could see the full opera by the cast who was on the Amadeus soundtrack.
@gamgee87 I don't know...I think Ramey has a very aristocratic bearing though I agree he's a little "stiff". I place the musicality above the physicality...but everyone has their preference which is one of the things that makes opera fun.
Cesare Siepi and Otto Edelmann, here. However, I think Thomas Allen gives a truly blood-curdling scream on Haitink's set, whereas Yurisich on the Norrington recording gives the best Leporello scream I've ever heard. Both Weisser and Regazzo (Jacobs) are really great, too.
Gilfry is the best; he sounds genuinely horrified. Siepi is too melodramatic. Kohn's Leporello sounds bored. The screams in the last two are fine but the tempi are way too fast for the scene to sound convincing.
Ooh, this is a tough one! In my opinion I think its either Siepi or Gilfry, but both have a completely different feel. Gilfry sounds horrified, while Siepi sounds like he was just gutted. Both are good though. . .
When I saw it at the Met yesterday with Schrott and D'Arcangelo, the staging for this scene was pretty disappointing, but the screams weren't! Schrott sounded like he was saving his voice for the whole opera until he realized he was about to go to hell, and finally his scream was terrifying and reak. And D'Arcangelo actually shouted/sang "NOOOO" in the same ringing bass voice as a pitch, but it worked so well. Also BTW, no one beat's Ildebrando's "Dite di no!" He sounds genuinely horrified.
No contest... Gilfry & D'arcangelo. I will even go so far as to say that Gilfry is perhaps the greatest Don Giovanni of all time. He (Gilfry) captures his (Giovanni) essence, his impulse with such clarity that I'm sure, even Herr Mozart would agree.
Well, I think the best here is Peter Mattei--it sounds the most like a real scream. But I think Thomas Allen in the Conlon conducted DVD has the best scream. It is a real scream, but very defiant. Then Feruccio Furlanetto as Leporello also has the best Leporello scream, because he sounds pathetic and scared.
The first DG I ever heard was the Furtwangler Salzberg Fest recording, so I've always thought Siepi was the best... And after hearing the competition here, I STILL think so!
IMO this "CageMatch" shows the advantage of a contrast between Giovanni and Leporello's reactions - some of these show Leporello merely repeating Giovanni's "dying fall" of a scream, it's almost comical ("Is there an echo in here?")
If ever I hear a scream to surpass Siepi's, you'll be the first to know. Thanks for this!
Best operatic scream I know is Gwyneth Jones as Desdemona on the Barbirolli recording. Resnik comes a close second on the Solti Elektra, though of course with recording they could always have scream doubles!
The last one was the best, I think. I liked Siepi and Fischer-Dieskau's gutteral screams, and Edelmann's sounded too musical - like a pitch instead of a scream. Van Dam did the same thing, but it was just enough. Christian Kohn's was just awful...no emotion at all.
Siepi, è il miglior don giovanni della storia dopo pinza.(che però a me non piace)

How fantastic to be able to compare them! Haha, thanks for posting this. Number 1 and 7 were my personal favourites here.
I am a fan of a really good scream on this ending though. One of the best I heard was Thomas Allen in one of his many many productions.

@greatwarcate - on disc, Thomas Allen's scream is a million times better than any hear here!

Siepi wins it for me. If I was being dropped into a pit of whirling flame, that's how I would scream.
evilsushix 3 years ago
Cesare Siepi gets my vote--he did the raw, terrified bellow at the end where some of the others more or less just sang a long sliding note.
Raimondi sounds like he was dropped into an unusually shallow Hell.

lol, yeah: not much of a drop!

LOL ahh. The final scream on the Amadeus soundtrack is my favorite of all. it sounds more like they are falling into hell.

I like it when they sing identically with the trombones.... like the last sample... but that performance didn't persuade for me =/

As for Don Giovanni the win goes to Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and for Leporello Van Dam is definitely the best

If you wanna hear a bloodcurdling scream. Listen to Thomas Allen's Glyndebourne recording. It's pretty spinetingling.

PS: The WORST ever is Bryn Terfel in the sound recording with Renee Fleming. He just sings the note with no expression whatsoever!

For the DG's, I am convinced that Gilfry, Siepi, and Mattei have the best death screams.
As for the Leporellos, either D'Arcangelo or Cachemaille. Both of them contain the explosive intensity in their screams.
