Photoshop for non-student : $ 1000 freaking bucks
Gimp: FREE
Photoshop is superior, it's a professional software, but it comes with his ridiculous price.
GIMP can do the job well done if you need to crop or modify your pics, but for someone like me, used Photoshop for years, i will prefer Photoshop. But now, i am reduced to use GIMP because i had to change my HD, because my old HD broke with my d/l version of Photoshop CS3 setup.exe with my serial and i didn't back it up. lol. =(
Gimp has a better interface with components separated into different windows especially if you have multiple monitors. The one major thing it needs though is a layer effects that is compatible with photoshop. Photoshop needs a Linux version. Several tools that need openGL don't work in a virtual machine even though the VM runs furmark full screen no problem.

It only costs that much because Adobe holds a monopoly over the software market so they can raise prices to however high they want. Most companies refuse to use Gimp because it's free and they want to seem professional by using software that has a huge price tag. It's the same reason that no companies use Blender.
Photoshop is overpriced as hell they would make more sales if they made it 100$-175$ But you can pirate it or re-download it every month after it runs out but you have to re-install your computer or completely erase it.
I am in the UK and photoshop cs5 is 545 pounds on sale. That is like 845 dollers in US money. If you can get it for 500 dollers in the US then that is cheap compared to Europe.

A very articulate and professionally presented review. I've been using Photoshop for the pc, but I'm interested in trying Gimp, mainly to see how good it handles with digitally photo manipulated work.
the difference: 1.The GIMP -free and fast download -awesome -i guess no body would pirated these software -hmm..not waste my money -who care about professional or not, it still manipulate the images 2.Adobe Photoshop -cool and awesome -more stylish than gimp -used in many movie effect -popular and known well in many country -cost 3 or 5 GB of your hard disk -made a worse lag for scumbag notebook -and the worse part, easy to pirated and easy to infected by viruses!
Go GIMP! Think about it....a free online program vs. a HUGE corporation? Really like David and Goliath. How funny that Adobe might be even a bit threatened by the popularity of GIMP. I don't know if they are but, who knows?
thats eazy if you use gimp and paint .net you have Photoshop LOL
Photoshop is the great fake tool on the planet , you can spot fake artwork that is done in Photoshop all the time ....and not only that they never take there own photos they are all ways from the net ...many they have Photoshop dont know how to use a camera LOL , cheat tool , but if you ask me there is no best photo program they are all the same
Gimp is a free opnesorced software for regular people, while PS is for regular-profesionals users, and it cost a lot of money. There you have it, å quick review :P
I don't know who are the most snobbish, those Apple bastards or these Photoshop extremists, The bottom line is this, there's nothing that's done in Photoshop and i do mean nothing that i can't do in Gimp, and ism not even going to touch on the whole "free" thing because the only reason so many people have Photoshop is because they're a bunch of thieves and crooks, I'm not stealing anyone stuff no one pays for Photoshop and until you do your have the right to make comment on the subject thief.
@TheLastGreatOne I bought PS but I got a huge discount because I am a student(kinda funny though My major is in engineering) I agree apple fanboys and PS nazis are douches but there are things you can't do in GIMP that you can in PS as of now. I'm a fan of both and I know the Linux community I'm so fond of will eventually bring GIMP up to PS's level in terms of features and many other areas. GIMP is great software. For most people GIMP is all they will ever need.
@TheLastGreatOne Oh and not everyone is a thief on here. Their are students and people who have PS elements(stripped down PS) I have a copy of elements that came with my Wacom....I never installed it. But yea you can not...well you can obviously...ok that statement that no one pays for PS is false. I did and I'm sure some pros who paid for it(or got it through work) came here to read the flame wars or start some. I came here to read the flame wars...but got sucked in O_O.
@EmbracingMyInsanity I wasn't referring to everyone, a lot of the gimp slanders didn't pay for their copy but they're the ones doing all the talking and the other half suck at being an artist they just jumped on someones bandwagon and rode it. come on you have to admit it's not the pros doing any of the talking that's my point if it were i wouldn't have a problem because they really know what they're talking about.
@TheLastGreatOne Yea it is just a bunch of fanboys talking crap.btw thank you @ allthefanboys you didn't help the point I'm trying to make lol. I'm just saying in the industry Adobe CS=the standard but as for individual pros Yea they may prefer GIMP. There is nothing wrong with GIMP while lacking in features compared to PS those features are moot to some Pro Artist. and when I say "standard" I don't mean it's law or something. I hope I haven't been coming off as a fan boy O_O
@EmbracingMyInsanity don't get me wrong PS is an amazing piece of software and it is better then gimp i'll admit that but Gimp doesn't mean that Gimp sucks and a piece of junk like they say it is Gimp is good in its own way, Gimp is Gimp and PS is PS .
@TheLastGreatOne Oh no dude I never said GIMP sucks. I like GIMP I've used Linux (and windows) since junior high. If you draw (like a Comic Artist). All you need is PS elements (which comes with almost any Wacom tablet) and GIMP. Most of the stuff that you only get in PS is for professional photographers. You can be a Professional artist and use GIMP. I myself use GIMP and Photoshop. I'd use PS elements but I'm just used to PS pro's UI(UI=User Interface for the normal people).
For basic use: Gimp. For professional use: Photoshop. I didn't experience GIMP's GUI very user friendly because of the 3 different windows, when photoshop has basicly one solid window. And GIMP misses some basic tools for making vector graphics. And last time I used GIMP, I didn't find any way to lock layers. Hide, yes, but lock, nope. And photoshop hass adjustment layers and easy way to controll layer effects etc. But I dont mean that GIMP is bad, definetely worth of trying! Its free!
@joona1992 That is how you take it. Gimp is very easy for me to use, probley because im more familiar with it but PS looks very complicated but now that how you say it i might try it out sometime.
@joona1992@joona1992 I agree PS is the industry standard. So if you are wanting a career in the field you need to learn PS. OH! adobe offers an 80% discount to students&instructors all you need is a valid stuent ID or copy of transcript and photo ID.sorry went off topic. But yea I use several different editors depending on what I am working on or if I need a certain tool or its just easier to do on the other...all depends. Most people will only need gimp...or Corel or something
@EmbracingMyInsanity sorry i disagree on the part where you said ( PS is the industry standard. So if you are wanting a career in the field you need to learn PS) <--- false info thats NOT true, for one thing i'm a graphic designer i use gimp all the time..i used PS side by side to see which is better...gimp hands down, i am getting paid from others doing their banners, templets, buttons and alot more using gimp i'm a pro at it. if one is a pro GIMP the other PS...Gimp wins.
@zeustruth I also use GIMP A LOT. I'm a Linux user as well as windows( I have majored in graphic design and I'm working towards a degree in engineering as well...huge geek here) but when talking about the industry standard PS is the standard as in more designers on a professional level use it be it because it is what their employer uses or personal preference. PS is more versatile than GIMP but with a HUGE price tag. I'll concede that if you are talented enough GIMP vs PS is moot.
@zeustruth Also PS has a huge learning curve it takes a lot of effort to use PS to its full potential. And as an artist why would you limit yourself to one piece of software? I use photoshop paintshop(on the rare occasion because somethings are easier) and GIMP. Each for various tasks. If I'm sketching/inking prefer PS. If I'm doing banners, icons, buttons, etc. GIMP(in Linux) or PS depending on what I feel like. *shrugs* In the end it is all personal preference.
@joona1992 You can lock layers, there is a chain thing and when it is on it locks it, and any brush you want from photoshop you can import into GIMP, but the three windows... I agree :)
if you think about it, PS has all this money for a program thats not too far ahead of gimp. however if gimp charged that much, the guys who make it could quit there jobs and probably use the money and time to make something better then PS.
I always get lost when following tutorials. I follow them to the T yet something's always different like a setting's missing or something and I can never follow along.
Too many tutorial folks leave out small details but there are no small details.
FOR ME... PHOTSHOP IS BETTER. :D IT HAS MORE TOOLS AND MORE STUFF. YES, IT IS A LITTLE HARD TO USE BUT ONCE YOU KNOW HOW TO USE IT. PHOTHOSHOP IS VERY EASY :D. YES, PHOTOSHOP IS EXPENSIVE .. BUT THERE ARE PORTABLE VERSIONS OF BOTH PROGRAMS THAT ARE FREE.. :D.. I HAVE THEM BOTH AND. I LIKE TO USE BOTH PROGRAMS,, BUT AS I SAID PHOTOSHOP IS BETTER. :D
I think the answer is Gimp. Gimp is easier, faster, free, and Open Source. There are also many ways you can use Gimp. Honestly, I think Gimp is just as powerful as Adobe Photoshop.
For amateur photo editing, i think gimp is better, you won't need all the features of photoshop only to make "cool pictures". I think you only need photoshop if you are an professional photo editor.
Another advantage of Gimp is that the future releases are free too. In 3 years, you may need to upgrade your photoshop, and the newest version is always very expensive.
I assume everybody is underestimating Adobe Photoshop ... Photoshop is the best winning photo editing software and everybody saying it sucks ? Can't believe ... with Photoshop , there are many plugins , fonts , brushes , animations available which beats GIMP. Many people using Photoshop gets greater results than in GIMP. I would rather myself prefer Photoshop.
i HATE photoshop e.e i once got it for like 45 days or something for free (yay) cause i heard its good well i couldnt even DRAW on it! either photoshop sucks or i dunno what a laptop is! gimp is free and easy so ya gimp is infinity times better
P.S. i think pplz who r pro on photoshop and make grass is good and i can make grass JUST LIKE THAT on gimp! and im not even close to being a pro! all i needed to do is download a few brushes and voila!
im a web/graphics designer, and i use both for commercial use, both has pros and cons... sometimes i do have to use both for the same job to get that perfect quality, especially in font rendering, that is where gimp usually comes in for fine detailed top quality, yet PS to add the detailed effects...
Myself (as a linux user) I only use gimp for quick editing, and stylizing my desktop.
ie: icons, panels, etc. It works nicely for that.
For real photo editing/retouching, I stick to CinePaint (which also has a flipbook feature, perfect for composited/layeyed animation - that will export with Alpha background too - which is handy!).
then i run Photoshop in VMware for the photoshop specific stuff i may require.
there really is no "true alternative" to Photoshop, unfortunately...
great videos, I do have a comment or two on the whole PS vs. Gimp.
the only application that i know of that is open source that can even handle the high-end formats that Photoshop does, is CinePaint. (gimp only handles 8bit unsigned images, does not properly handle color profiles either, and is useless to any professional).
Photoshop is an extremely powerful & precise tool, it's functionality is nearly limitless. GIMP I see as a watered down photoshop alternative. It lacks photo filters, a book list of regular filters, and RAW imaging. I am a photographer on a possessional level so precision and power is extremely important to me, anything less makes me look like an amateur in the business. However, I have lynux installed on my laptop and I have no choice but to use GIMP at times. With lots ore effort I get by
@Benjamin568 One reason explains both your problems: you computer blows. Get a job and upgrade your 70's hardware and enjoy the sheer power. For me and many others it takes no ore than 15 mins to install photoshop.
i guess gimp is the best. Its free, light of its size, easy to install and fast even for low pc. As i can see, the features between gimp and photoshop doesn't really have such a different. Photoshop is just a famous software and commercial, so it doesn't mean you must choose photoshop as the best.
Gimp is free&open. You can edit a lot. There are all kinds of plugins and stuff. There is the shortcut editor which seems to be useful.Gimp is getting better and better because each one can help developing.
You can also ude gimp on Linux which seems impossible for PS now.
Photoshop isn't free and isn't open.
There are some plugins, lot of brushes&stuff.
Photoshop is faster than Gimp,a lot more pro and there are a few thing that Gimp still doesn't have.Though PS is a pro program and you can make H
in fact. we can do that in a single click, on the side is a mask tool called alpha strength, and we set it up to how much we want to, can you outline images into multi-coloured lines in a single click? with highlights around the main areas?
@rockytandy2 wow there is a faster way of doin that is photoshop cs5 extended photoshop much bttr watch his latest vids he Gimp Knows How even admitts that he uses photoshop more watch his lates videos!
I've been running Ubuntu for the past 4 years as my primary OS. Since the only decent IM program available on Ubuntu is GIMP it's been stuck on my system for a very long time. But I always go through the painful process of installing Photoshop on Ubuntu.... You have no idea how hard it is to get Adobe running on Lynux and yet I spend the hours doing it, why? Because GIMP never has compared, never will compare to the professional precision and power of Adobe. "You get what you pay for"
@usmansharifmicky i don't like to crack; i don't like that everybody think the same way; i don't like that we are forced to accept one tool; i don't like to get a thing if i don't need it; i like people looking for new things; i like people giving time for other people; i like to learn; am i so idiot?
Just to add the fact that with scripts, python and all other plug-ins. You could probably make gimp run an endless amount of actions. It is all up to the programming users. Gimp is upgraded and made with more features by the users. Which means if you know what you are doing with it the possibilities are endless. An open ended program design or a corporate created program that locks you into there idea of the way things should be done?? I
Not even a good argument. Gimp over Photoshop. Might as well add Linux vs windows. Windows vs Mac. Everything is just a tool. (much like this kid) it all boils down to what you the user can do and what you the user wants the end result to be. A means to an end. Just like my attention to this video.
@codegoddard actually, all of those you mentioned photoshop can do. in fact photoshop CS5 can even make fine selections of fine hair sticking up on the edge of the head.

Wulza 4 months ago

I don't know who are the most snobbish, those Apple bastards or these Photoshop extremists, The bottom line is this, there's nothing that's done in Photoshop and i do mean nothing that i can't do in Gimp, and ism not even going to touch on the whole "free" thing because the only reason so many people have Photoshop is because they're a bunch of thieves and crooks, I'm not stealing anyone stuff no one pays for Photoshop and until you do your have the right to make comment on the subject thief.
TheLastGreatOne 7 months ago
@TheLastGreatOne I bought PS but I got a huge discount because I am a student(kinda funny though My major is in engineering) I agree apple fanboys and PS nazis are douches but there are things you can't do in GIMP that you can in PS as of now. I'm a fan of both and I know the Linux community I'm so fond of will eventually bring GIMP up to PS's level in terms of features and many other areas. GIMP is great software. For most people GIMP is all they will ever need.
EmbracingMyInsanity 3 weeks ago
@TheLastGreatOne Oh and not everyone is a thief on here. Their are students and people who have PS elements(stripped down PS) I have a copy of elements that came with my Wacom....I never installed it. But yea you can not...well you can obviously...ok that statement that no one pays for PS is false. I did and I'm sure some pros who paid for it(or got it through work) came here to read the flame wars or start some. I came here to read the flame wars...but got sucked in O_O.
EmbracingMyInsanity 3 weeks ago
@EmbracingMyInsanity I wasn't referring to everyone, a lot of the gimp slanders didn't pay for their copy but they're the ones doing all the talking and the other half suck at being an artist they just jumped on someones bandwagon and rode it. come on you have to admit it's not the pros doing any of the talking that's my point if it were i wouldn't have a problem because they really know what they're talking about.
TheLastGreatOne 2 weeks ago
@TheLastGreatOne Yea it is just a bunch of fanboys talking crap.btw thank you @ allthefanboys you didn't help the point I'm trying to make lol. I'm just saying in the industry Adobe CS=the standard but as for individual pros Yea they may prefer GIMP. There is nothing wrong with GIMP while lacking in features compared to PS those features are moot to some Pro Artist. and when I say "standard" I don't mean it's law or something. I hope I haven't been coming off as a fan boy O_O
EmbracingMyInsanity 2 weeks ago
@EmbracingMyInsanity don't get me wrong PS is an amazing piece of software and it is better then gimp i'll admit that but Gimp doesn't mean that Gimp sucks and a piece of junk like they say it is Gimp is good in its own way, Gimp is Gimp and PS is PS .
TheLastGreatOne 2 weeks ago

Its free!
joona1992 7 months ago 26
@joona1992 That is how you take it. Gimp is very easy for me to use, probley because im more familiar with it but PS looks very complicated but now that how you say it i might try it out sometime.

@joona1992 @joona1992 I agree PS is the industry standard.
EmbracingMyInsanity 1 month ago
@EmbracingMyInsanity sorry i disagree on the part where you said ( PS is the industry standard. So if you are wanting a career in the field you need to learn PS) <--- false info thats NOT true, for one thing i'm a graphic designer i use gimp all the time..i used PS side by side to see which is better...gimp hands down, i am getting paid from others doing their banners, templets, buttons and alot more using gimp i'm a pro at it. if one is a pro GIMP the other PS...Gimp wins.
zeustruth 3 weeks ago
@zeustruth I also use GIMP A LOT. I'm a Linux user as well as windows( I have majored in graphic design and I'm working towards a degree in engineering as well...huge geek here) but when talking about the industry standard PS is the standard as in more designers on a professional level use it be it because it is what their employer uses or personal preference. PS is more versatile than GIMP but with a HUGE price tag. I'll concede that if you are talented enough GIMP vs PS is moot.
EmbracingMyInsanity 3 weeks ago
@zeustruth Also PS has a huge learning curve it takes a lot of effort to use PS to its full potential. And as an artist why would you limit yourself to one piece of software? I use photoshop paintshop(on the rare occasion because somethings are easier) and GIMP. Each for various tasks. If I'm sketching/inking prefer PS. If I'm doing banners, icons, buttons, etc. GIMP(in Linux) or PS depending on what I feel like. *shrugs* In the end it is all personal preference.
EmbracingMyInsanity 3 weeks ago
@joona1992 gimp beats PS hands down no contest.
zeustruth 3 weeks ago
@joona1992 You can lock layers, there is a chain thing and when it is on it locks it, and any brush you want from photoshop you can import into GIMP, but the three windows... I agree :)

if you think about it, PS has all this money for a program thats not too far ahead of gimp. however if gimp charged that much, the guys who make it could quit there jobs and probably use the money and time to make something better then PS.

Myself (as a linux user) I only use gimp for quick editing, and stylizing my desktop.
ie: icons, panels, etc. It works nicely for that.
For real photo editing/retouching, I stick to CinePaint (which also has a flipbook feature, perfect for composited/layeyed animation - that will export with Alpha background too - which is handy!).
then i run Photoshop in VMware for the photoshop specific stuff i may require.
there really is no "true alternative" to Photoshop, unfortunately...
triplesquarednine 10 months ago
great videos, I do have a comment or two on the whole PS vs. Gimp.
the only application that i know of that is open source that can even handle the high-end formats that Photoshop does, is CinePaint. (gimp only handles 8bit unsigned images, does not properly handle color profiles either, and is useless to any professional).
CinePaint handles 16bit Unsigned integer, 32bit IEEE float, 16bit fixed point.
In Linux anyway, it is the best choice for retouching of both film and photos.

Benjamin568 10 months ago
i guess gimp is the best. Its free, light of its size, easy to install and fast even for low pc. As i can see, the features between gimp and photoshop doesn't really have such a different. Photoshop is just a famous software and commercial, so it doesn't mean you must choose photoshop as the best.
azmilarash96 10 months ago
Gimp is free&open. You can edit a lot. There are all kinds of plugins and stuff. There is the shortcut editor which seems to be useful.Gimp is getting better and better because each one can help developing.
You can also ude gimp on Linux which seems impossible for PS now.
Photoshop isn't free and isn't open.
There are some plugins, lot of brushes&stuff.
Photoshop is faster than Gimp,a lot more pro and there are a few thing that Gimp still doesn't have.Though PS is a pro program and you can make H
