hey-partly becaulse of you i also bought a banjo-mine was in pieces though-put it back together-its an old global-nice now-im from wisconsin -usa-i know what a dabbler is-i fixed a violin and mandolin and quite a few guitars-wtf is a modicum though? damn these banjos will grown on you-check out meanmary80
You could also check out some stuff by the jazz banjoist, Bela Fleck. That man is a VIRTUOSO! I haven't learned any of his stuff yet, but I really hope to at some point! (I'm mainly a guitarist, bassist, violinist, ocarinist, pianist, drummer, and a dabbler of other instruments lol)
@GreenbeeN8 One who dabbles. In this case, it means that I don't really play certain other instruments to quite a proficient level, but I sort of have a small modicum of expertise with them.
Foggy Mountain Breakdown is a tough one, but it sounds awesome. I'm a beginner banjo player myself and I've sorta been working on that one.
Others are:
Shuckin' the Corn
East Bound and Down (by Jerry Reed)
Man of Constant Sorrow
Dueling Banjos (I'm sort of working on that one myself :P)
There are many songs by the modern all-female folk group, Katzenjammer, that has banjo. It's mostly chords, but it's still fun =) Check out their song, Demon Kitty Rag, I recently learned it and it's REALLY fun!
@thebailster5@thebailster5 it definitely did. 100 pounds on my asshole. i just kept pounding that dildo. oh oh oh oh uh uh oh yeah oh oh pound me pound me oh oh oh
well cripple creek is probably the easiest to begin with for a 5string banjo :)
Really depends on what songs you really like (atleast it was like that for me anyways, couldn't learn a tune if I didn't like it). Good luck with the picking!
Started out with a 5string myself, but went over to a 4string tenor banjo as I found out I liked irish tunes more :)
That is lovely, I love the sound of a banjo, probably partly becuase of my southern up bringing ( well, Texas anyway) and becuase I find it so entertaining. I want to learn to play both that and the autoharp as well. :D
I agree with artistfood, Frailing is a great style, its how i play. check out patrick costello. he has an amazing amount of videos and FREE books on how to play frailing style. gis username here on youtube is Dobro33H. DL a copy of the How and the Tao of Oldtime Banjo. there are links to his website on his profile.
Hi olehippy! It's finding the time to practise that I'm struggling with! Maybe I should quit my job and become a struggling young musician...? hehe :)
Thanks! My friends say I talk really English on these videos but very Welsh in real life - I have no idea why!
You should deffinately try the banjo - it's great fun and judging by how amazing your bass playing is I'm sure you could do amazing things with a banjo.
Hi Amy thats great! I've always wanted to play the banjo,I've never even tried one! But you started playing just what I was going to suggest (theme from 'Deliverance')looks like you're already getting the hang of it! I look forward to hearing you play. I also have Windows Vista, and I empathize! When I got my new PC I basically skipped as much of the Vista applications that weren't absolutely necessary. Took a while though, and I had to add a 'Firewire' for video uploads..Good luck!
You should get yourself a banjo and have a go. I'd never played one before but you get used to it after a while. I'd love to hear you jamming on the banjo - that could be interesting!

The first three songs I learned were,
Cripple Creek, (but it looks like you've got that)
Drunken Lullabies by Flogging Molly,
and if you go to google and search
"Broken Camera" by Andrew Landon
you can figure it out by ear, it's a fun song to play
(P.S., if you start to like the song and listen to "Andrew Landon", keep in mind that he is not a real musician, only an audio pirate!!!)
Good luck with the banjo and have fun
:)

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll get more practise in when I find time :)

I`ve always wanted to play some day on banjo, but I`ve never had any on my hands ;|
But it`s not important ;)
Important is that You`re very interesting person, who can enjoy by playing and singing. And thats the reason why music is so magic!
Ps. You`ve got likeable English accent ;>
Greatings!
