  • I have used a 58 to hammer nails... I'm not kidding.

  • Hi") I would ask you about the differences between Shure SM58 and Beta58, what can you tell about it? (except the cost and strength)

  • To get really technical, the XLR doesn't power the Shure.. the Shure powers the XLR.

  • Great vid! Simple, to the point info.

    Thanks,

    Al

  • great review, except for the shirt! (joke) manu fan here. keep it up!

  • Every musician should have an SM58. Rock solid reliable, great sounding and they last forever.

  • this mic is goodif i have only active speakers?

  • Does anyone know a good mic under £100 or $165 that is good to record with and use live :) ?

  • @sirlazyharry uhmm SM 58.. :D

  • Comment removed

  • Amps that work well with it ?

  • I do tech crew for our school and we have 20 of these SM58's, they are absolutely brilliant, great if dropped, they are pretty much indestructable. Although, it requires you to pretty much be kissing the mic to hear them very well and you can get a LOT of feedback pretty easily. Great sound quality, would definately reccomend them.

  • i have a usb pre-amp would that be good to record with this mic?

  • I've got an old sm58 for my vocals but I'm looking for something a bit more 'live' sounding

    any suggestions?

  • what mic is best for someone who wants to record singing covers on a computer and upload them to the computer, and maybe include some guitar somewhere down the line.

  • why did you spit in the grill?

  • @kittykatro He didn't :P he was showing that the letter P sends a lot of wind into a mic XD

  • It should be okay if I'm plugged into an interface then right?

  • HI, YOU INFORMATION IS GREAT!! YOU SHOULD HIGHER THE VIDEO BECAUSE YOU HEAD IS PARTIALLY CUT OFF AT CERTAIN TIMES IN THE SHOW.

  • Hello, I was thinking of purchasing this mic. I have a mini studio at home in my bedroom with my desktop computer. I have an area fenced off with blankets and other padding. I don't have a mixer or an EQ, I have used audacity but am considering upgrading and investing in Pro Tools. What would be a good Mic for me at 100 dollars or under?

  • what are some other mics along this price range (give or take. i mean cheaper would be awesome but i mean a couple more bucks well spent wont be a big deal..)

that could be good for live performances?

im a vocalist and a beatboxer and use loads of effects pedals and goodies, so what would suffice? doesn't behringer make some decent ones too?

  • @ahffk behringer has all its stuff made in China.

  • Hi there, my mum just bought a 5.1ch Digital Speech Control Amplifier (AMP-510USB), and i just realised that there is where i can plug a mic into, so am wondering wether if i bought a shure sm58 it would work. Can anyone help?

  • Hey can you use this mic for computer as will, like it ain't USB right? I think "XLR" they call It by the way can you even connect this Shure SM 58 microphone onto a computer because I need to connect this mic onto Cool edit pro for recording, Any help? Thanks!

  • I have a Pod x3 Live Effects pedal...You said it would be hard to record to computer but the Pod has all that EQ stuff and what not. Will it work before I buy I'm just ery curious as I don't wanna blow 60$! Thanks

  • Could it stand scream while recording?

  • @Cheatman97 - yes, no problem

  • What do you think about Sennheiser e835?

    Don't you think it's better?

  • I know i am bringing the wrong microphone, I wonder, regarding the SM57, i noticed the SM58 has a metal protection around it, but that it underneath it looks like an SM57. I just wonder, is it worth spending money for this protection for an SM57?

I also wonder if you know if older dels of the SM57 look/Sound different compared to the newer ones? :)

    Thank you!

    /Elias

  • @Tombking2 - they both use the same capsule. [inside parts]

there will be no difference from an older SM57 [or 58 for that matter] to a new one.

  • sm 58 or sennheiser e935 or e945 for live stage gigs, male vocals?

  • I want to get a good microphone for recording my voice into the computer.

I was thinking the Shure SM58 and a blue microphone icicle.

Would that be a good investment? Since I am just getting started or should I go with something like the Samson G Track or COU1?

  • Are there any other differences between the SM58 and the SM58S besides the on/off switch?

  • I have an SM58 and am recording through an XLR M-Audio USB interface into Logic on my Mac. Is there any way I can get a better quality of sound? How about processing? Aside from EQ, what can I do to make my dynamic mic sound a bit closer to a condenser? Thank you :)

  • The SM58 is fine going direct to a computer as far a signal level goes. Boost the damned volume on your computer. Is it the best way to go? No but it will work if you are on a low budget and just making demos.

  • for recording rock vocals, i think rediculiosly high end condensers sound almost too good. you listen to it, and you're like "nobody's voice sounds that smooth." Just grab a 58 and you're set. 58s and 57s have been used on so many more huge name records than ppl realize. U2, RHCP, Michael Jackson. All cheap Shure dynamic mics.

Now Pop and such is defferent, of course.

  • what should i use for my radio show?

  • You need phantom power via a preamp/audio interface when going into a computer

  • hey i was wondering how good is the microphone to record a song?

  • best microphones they been around for years.

  • i just got the sonar home studio version 7 xl by cakewalk and a shure sm58s. i need a usb adapter to hook my mic into my pc but your saying that i will also need a mixer for this to work?

  • you only need an interface between the mic and your pc...the rest you can do with the Sonar LE...

  • thanks man. i looked up the info a week ago when i got my package

  • nice review. Could you plz make a review about shure pg58. It is a mic that is just a little lower quality than a sm58 but it cost a lot less then sm58.

  • 58 is the mic for Live playing. If you're VERY picky there are better sounding Dynamic mics out there But the 58 is a good compromise between price, build, Even sound, and other things that make a Live mic (built in pop guard and Cardioid pickup pattern) Better sounding Mics might not be as resilient or handle plosives or Feedback. as well.

  • try and get beta 58s now, they are a bit better than normal 58s imo

  • "If you don't plan on recording often"?? what do you mean/what does he mean ?_?

  • @dUJARAH7 he means that this mic' is for mainly live/stage use, but if your recording your beter off with a mic more sorted for the job.

  • ok thanks

  • 5 star for the shirt

  • ok im a microphone noobie im just wondering would this microphone work if it is plugged into a bass guitar amp?

  • yes we do it all the time.... prolly could get better sound but hell it works

  • Is That A Recording Mic

  • do people need a mixer for a garage band?

  • Hmm is this mic good for screams? the price is nice :D

  • its good for all vocals for shure... lol uber pun

  • i don't mean 30£ about a new one...

i've heard those rumours as well...

I mean about used ones from reliable ebay users....

  • Wait so I can't plug this in to my computer and record like that?

  • you can find them in ebay for even 30£... That's a steal! XD

  • eNikoltsios Genuine Shure SM58's are around £95 - Those £30 steals are fakes, made to look like the real deal. be suspect of anyone selling brand new one's less than around £70. IF you buy from Shure's approved list and buy in bulk you can pay about £50 a mic.

  • Does this mic work with computers? for skype. vent etc?

  • yea you just need an adapter.. i have that and a sennheiser e-935. sennheiser is better but costs more

  • yes, ive done it but you need a audio interface like a m-audio fast track pro..

  • P or SH sounds will not damage dynamic microphones as said in the video. Even if there was no ball grill and you were talking directly into the diaphragm, there would be no damage. These things are indestructible. Well, Shure mics anyway.

  • Exactly right. The mic is designed to take sound vibrations, and convert them into a signal. The strength of that signal can damage the mixer if the gain is too high but not the mic itself. Otherwise you would have to store the mic away from loud noise (a band playing for example...) which is nonsense! The damage that can result from not having the filter would be from moisture entering the microphone from your singing, which shortens the life rather than immediately damaging the mic.

  • hey guys im thinking about buying the sm58 but i do screaming/singing.... does it work good for screaming and singing?

  • No, get a condenser mic instead. This type of mic uses a big fat coil to pick up sound, which is very hard wearing, but you miss out the treble detail. Condensers use a thin film. If you're not recording though, and just using it live, no-one will notice the difference, but them you probably don't need your own mic anyway.

  • Hell yeah.

  • yea! get a sure for screaming...there da best

  • Cool, thanks I was wondering this, I plan on buying one today for my covers, I kinda want to record with it too, is it gonna be ok for that? Even tho the guy said probably not? lol.

  • i think it would be fine, but im no expert haha.

  • Thanks man.

  • no prob

  • abr's amazing btw but ya it works great for screaming as well as singing

  • hey guys ive got an sm58 and i was recording something simple with garageband the other day but i noticed that wen the voice didnt seem to blend in with the beat (it was a rap song)

so i decided to put it further away from my mout but the i cudnt hear myself properly!!

so wot do u guys think i shud do?( i saw on the web that the Imic makes a lot of difference)

    thanks

  • a condenser mic

  • Hey guys. I'm looking for a good microphone for Metal-singing in the like of Trivium, Pantera etc. You know, shouting-clean vocals. I was looking around at found this one which seems to be a nice microphone at a very affordable price. But is this mic any good for Metal-singing? Does it keep the clarity when you shout out loud right into it, etc. ?

  • yess mannn...i just got it...even though i rap its really amazingg :)

  • this is probably good cause i know kurt cobain used it on his last recording and it has some screaming so im thinking it could handle it .

  • How About The JEFE AVL 1900ND ,Is It good for hip hop and rap stuff

  • Do you have one? I used to have one but gave it away a few years ago. Now I tried it again and it's perfect for me live on stage, way better than the sm58 (for me that is, can't tell for anyone else). I can't find a online shop to order one (or more) and get it send to Europe (NL). If you got any contact/shop or whatever, can you help me out? I really would appreciate it,

    thanx,

    Hans.

  • Why not record with one? The 58 sounds better than most of the cheap Chinese condensers out there. If you want more high end get a 57.

  • is this a good mic for metal vocals? and screamo?

  • yes most screamo band use these live.

  • Its a rare sight to see an american wearing a england rugby shirt :) nice review mate

  • hey so how about the beta version. what do you think about it?

  • awesome review...but i need something to record with

  • Get the Electro-voice Cardinal.

  • I was thinking about buying this mic, I'm an independent artist and I produce music on my computer, but I don't have a lot of money, is this a good choice for me?

  • absolutely, IF you have a mixer or some way to boost the signal AND eq... if not i think there are other mics that are better bang/buck

  • @lifeMac yes, the mic really is wonderful!

  • @lifeMac you only realy need a tube amp witch can be obtaind for arround £20 -£400 GBP the more you spend usaly the better sounding your track will be hope i helped joe

  • thanks for the info very informative straight forward...

  • I've been reading all over the Internet where the AKG D 5 Supercardioid Dynamic XLR Mic seems to have a leading edge over the SHURE SM58 XLR Mic for the exact same price of just $100. + The AKG D 5 is a much newer 2008 Model & has newer technology as well. More up-2-date than the Shure SM 58 they say in terms of better technology for a little better edge over the SM58 type w/performance. I'd like to see a video like this one in comparison of how the 2 both compare in terms of vocal standards. ;)

  • just face it dude people love this mic i personally dont but we all know no matter what this is an idustry standard mic everyone uses celiene dion miley cyrus her dad hilary duff we cant beat that lol no matter what when they mess up people seem to buy em again and again and again

  • Awesome vid, it was straight forwward and effective.

  • phantom porwer will not damage this mic.

  • dude u can soo use the sm58 for recording jus make sure your using a powerfull enough preamp

  • you don't agree that $100 for the SM58 and $100 for the preamp would give you a lesser quality recording than a $200 mic that is already at line level? I didn't say you can't, I said "not too often" and "there might be a better mic out there for you"

  • am searching 4 a good usb mic for a professional studio sound quality is there any?plz reply

  • the only USB mic I have personally heard is the Samson C01U... it was pretty good!

  • so the sm58 isnt good for recording? how about the sm57 is that good for recording...i heard you can turn a s58 to a 57...im mainly gonna record talkbox and (beatboxing)

    help me out plz?

  • it is actually great for those purposes, it will give your voice a bit of an effect rather than sounding like your actual voice... beatboxers send a TON of wind through a mic, enough to damage expensive ones

  • which one you reccomend Sm58 or 57 and is it treu taht you can turn a sm58 to a sm57? what is the diffrence is sm57 for recording or somthing? also do you know anything about m-audio usb intefaces ( fast track pro)

  • @hallal55 SM57 and SM58 use the identical internal parts. the 58 has the sphere, the 57 doesn't. [my source, Shure]

  • shure sm58 is better than samson co1u. TRUST ME!

  • get an SM58 and use a XLR to USB cable

  • tx man am so confused someone told me any condenser mic is better what do u think

  • hi what do u think about t bone sc300 mic plz reply

  • I have a question. I like this mic but is it dangerous to use it with phantom power? I mention it in case I plug it in and I forget the +48v on

  • Hey dude I own the AKG do you think the C1000s is better then a pencil condenser placed at the 12 fret to capture the high end of an acoustic?and also when you say live do you mean for vocals?

    Thanks
