The character played by James Coburn was actually a Dutchman named Bram van der Stok, he's considered the most succesful Dutch pilot in WW2. In reality, he fled to Utrecht and was escorted to Spain from there. The character was supposed to be named after him as well but he demanded his name to be changed. Most characters in the film are amalgamations.
@rafale1981 yes you re right, I try to learn german, I like it and it sounds way better than what I heard so far in the ww2 movies. I dunno if it really is the way the soldiers spoke or if they over do it.... greetings from France.
That's where Star Wars got its "These aren't the droids you're looking for" >:D
Classic movie. Shame we'll never see another one. All the modern movies are CGI filled crap. And damnit Mac! You shouldn't have fallen for that trick.
What dirty rotten scum those soldiers must have been for pulling the trigger and murdering the young airmen.....I suppose most of them would have been under 25?
6:23 Oh great, MacDonald, now poor Ashley-Pitt's sacrifice is all for nothing. He should have just saved himself and left them to get captured, since all he did was delay the inevitable.
What you talking about? What I want to know is why didn't they shoot Hendley or for wearing civilian clothes? Let alone not even put him in the cooler?
I love this film and when Steve pats the motorbike that nearly carried him to freedom, truly heartbreaking. Hollywood is making all these crap remakes. Remake this classic and let THEM ALL escape.
But if everybody got away, you would lose those heartbreaking moments. I think this film is so touching, a true masterpiece because it does show that the good guys don't always win.
actually . . hes known as The Cooler King, NOT the Cooler Man. Hilts only gets sent to the cooler because he, unlike bartlett isnt the leader of a organization who plans major escapes.
the one that was lecturing of the other prisoners earlier in the movie not to be caught by the old trick of the Germans using English and then was caught by a more sophisticated version of the same trick here, "good luck".
I love the part where Steve McQueen, caught by barbed wire, and made to give up, pats his '"trusty steed" ( his "cycle" ) in thank you and goodbye. Real. Steve loves his motorcycles. Really, let's see an upload of "On Any Sunday" with Steve McQueen and Malcom Smith.
in the alley he says halt, stand still, hands up, your english.....Bartlett replies very calmly ''Was soll dass'' What's all this.....
going on to say..you threaten me with a pistole, english, take the pistol away....the ss gy then says surprised, ach your german...Bartlett replies understandably...
the ss guy says excuse us, good, go on..
an amazing scene...
I stayed in germany for 20 years, am now back in Scotland............
i feel so sorry for henley and colin, what are the chances of their plane running out of fuel just short of switzerland? and hilts? he was right at the german swiss border.
Ya I know but I felt bad that I never cried in that movie... I felt like I should have. When Colin died that was the closest I ever came to cry in this movie. Well anyway I know this is a little silly
You guys will probably believe me, but I'm a normal 13 year old girl who is obbsessed with old movies! I saw my first when I was 4, but anyway, The Great Escape is my favorite movie out of all of them. Ever since my grandpa showed me it, I've been a huge McQueen fan like he is. But it's so annoying because none of my friends in my 8th grade class know what The Great Escape or who Steve McQueen is. I feel weird sometimes lamo. What other 13 year old girls are like huge fans of Steve McQueen? :]
OMG! i know! and he's the one who was teaching the other POWs about how they can't say anything in english unless they wanna be captured! jeez, ironic...

You just don´t shoot Steve McQueen... ;)

it must just be Hollywood.there were no Americans in the real escape,so the filmmakers can basically do anything with his character that they want.
