  • Strange how much the eel and the dude look alike

  • Big Fun.

  • we catch these alot now in Oregon with rods my cousin caught one last week that was 56 inches the biggest one ive seen

  • I now know what becomes of the child who emerges from the womb reciting the names of all of the dinosaurs. Your mother must worry..!!! LOLOL..and yes, this is Ms J Rossner!

  • Thanks for the upload, I'd always wondered how to poke pole a monkey-faced eel :)

  • You don't know me. But I am a friend of Elel Johnson's. I had heard about you and "poke polling" I have done this years ago, when I first moved to the Monterey Bay.

I need to do this again! Great video!!!!

    Thank you,

    Kirk

  • its usually easier if you just fish for them at the breakwaters by your harbor

  • They die hard in my freezer lol

  • I don't know about all that pole poking, I used a regular fishing pole and stood on top of the cliff. I didn't even get wet. But very good eating.

  • I caught a monkey face in the early eighties off the rocks at the South mooring of the Golden Gate Bridge. I was using light tackle and sardines. I guess I just got lucky as I'd never heard of the fish. It was very slippery and tough to hold but worth the catch. A delicious meal.

  • is there a specific season for these?

  • Is this Badega Bay or further north

  • Looks more like the central coast.

  • Very nice video, but those are very small eels. Back in the early to mid '80s I used to poke pole monkeyface eel in san francisco bay (sausalito) with a 12' bamboo pole constructed in the same way but using a metal coat hangar for the rod end instead, 8" steel leader at the end of coat hangar. Average size eel was about 3-4', rarely caught one smaller than 3', largest I caught was close to 6' in the rocks under the pier on bridgeway couple blocks south of the ferry terminal.

  • Actually, the monkeyface eel has very good meat. It is comparable to monkfish or halibut.

  • Aha knew knowledge, I'm growing now.... I can take my life to the next level!!!!!!!!

  • I'm gonna try this at a spot I know where there are rocks.....Wish me luck!

  • To prepare a monkey face eel nail the head and tail to a board, then liberally douse the dressed eel with lemon, white wine, salt, black pepper, and any peppers which you might prefer.

    Bake in a pre-heated oven at 350 degree's for 25-30 minutes.

Remove from the oven, and allow to cool.

Remove the eel from the board, and throw the eel away. Eat the board, it will taste better!

  • hilarious lol!

  • After this, there are no more secrets...!

  • So now I know. Thank you Wholphin!

  • wow. The whole time I thought it was fake. Awesome.

  • I've gone poke-pulling with this guy. It is like a sword and sandal epic, except with waders.

  • Which was the monkey-face?-sorry

  • Yea, but how do you clean, prepare, and eat them? That's all I wanna know...

  • "any animal that is that hard to kill will do good things for your sexual potency" hahahah

  • i hate this video! buuuu!

  • im going to pull the pole out of his eye BEFORE he gets hurt

  • hey hey we're the monkey faced eels

  • he cathes one at the end

  • furious boner

  • Ha ha, I love how excited he was to catch one on the drive there.

  • "There's a million places for them to be... uh.. chillin'"

  • This is ridiculously awesome.

  • wow lol these vids r awesome

  • this guy is "awesome". He's GOT to be someone's favorite person...

  • That was cute (:

  • good vid

  • fuck me, that was random

  • Tat monkey make a better cheap!!

  • We use steel leader. if they dont bite right away, you have to jab at them a few times, and the original poke pole was a golf flag, but we use bamboo now. o and who the hell told everyone about poke poling?

  • sweeet!

  • After I caught my first eel I was addicted! It's alot of fun! tons o' life in those tide pools.

  • and no it doesnt look easy!!!

  • man the equipment to hunt the monkey faced eel is cheap!!!

  • Interesting ! I don't think we have any of this species in Germany. ;-)

  • I see this guy caught the California record monkeyface prickleback eel last year, quite a thing to be able to brag about.
