If you like Ska try Two Steps Twice, a new band who are finalists for Live and Unsigned 2011 at the O2 UK. Bringing ska back to life in 2011. Look them up on Facebook for more info!
Saw these Wednesday night at Brighton and it was absolutley fucking crazy! Being in the crowd was like being on a treadmill for 3 hours! Loved evrey minute of it!!!
I was at my grandads one sunday morning back in the early 80's and this song came on the radio. Grandad listened for a few moments with disapproval, and deduced that the guy singing should be thrown in the bloody River Nile!
Everytime I hear this, it always reminds me of that time.
Me and my bro used to go nuts for this tune. We had a wooden board with green material on it for laying jigsaws on, we used to carry it round our neighbour's house and use it as a mini stage to go nutty on to madness to entertain them. Poor old sods must have thought we were mental.
this is twenty times better than the studio version in my opinion .I can actually close my eyes and imagine that I'm on a boat along the river nile ...
Damn ...these guys musta been GOOOD... that performance quality back in 79 on an analog sound LIVE set could only come from a great band. Wow! Sounds almost like the damn record!!!!
every band sounds incredible on the old grey whistle test. got to give a hand for the sound engineers on that show. not only did they pick fantastic fucking bands, but they knew exactly how to record them well. akin to bbc radio one.
Bands back then still had talent and had to play something, they couldn't just lipsync their way through songs on TV like they do now. Sounds of punk/newwave (Ska as it was called back then), brings back memories of high school from the mid 80's
Have never been a big Madness fan but viewed this many years ago. Great to see it again. As per previous comments so much energy. "Shut up and dance". Suggs was'nt kidding. How could anyone keep still to this?
@completecontrol77 you are, indeed, so right mate! I'm 31 years old, born in 1979, and Madness is the band of my childhood! no such divine voice nowadays! that's for sure mate! now it's only one bullshit music which follows another crap, etc. etc. yours sincerey, Aviad, Israel! LONG LIVE MADNESS!!!!!!!!
@baldystewart ...the relevance of mentioning the age is obvious: that he can appreciate good music. Most people his age right now only listen to NEW stuff...hip-hop, reggaeton, pop, etc. He doesn't suffer from the generational gaps. That's why he has all those thumbs up.
@completecontrol77 i was 20 when i saw madness at the liverpool empire, good for you young man to make a great statement.nowadays its all about drive by shootings and chicks asses NO IMAGINATION. wish i could take you back in time to the jam, clash, ian dury, stranglers, buzzcocks, undertones you would have fitted in im sure Take care mate
Got the lot on vinyl. They can play, unlike the shite in the charts now. Best years of my life, Great time to be young when they graced the charts. Lee is a god on that sax. Simon Cowell not fit to kiss their boots.
Fan of some 25 years standing....just saw them for the first time 2 weeks ago at V Festival on the Gold Coast Australia...Su-fookin'-perb...nothing comes close...Nutty Boys!!!
Did "Madness" ever do a gig in Cairo? Recorded on the banks of the river Thames near Fulham Hammersmith. Yeah in 1979 they sent my "Giro to Cairo" and we were, all boracic lint skint, since then. The only night boat to Cairo leaves from Alexandria up river.
I remember watching this when it was originally broadcast, I was 16, that was 30 years ago and I still think it is as good as it was then, I'm sure they did Bed & Breakfast that night too, I'm pretty sure the shit they're bringin out now will also sound as good in 30 years, thank god for pop idol, girls aloud n that.....
Just remember they were still a bit green at the time, not the band they were when they got big. And the track was intended to be Sax Heavy from the outset.
YOUR DANCING SHOES AND START TO DANDE RUDEBOY!
I sent them ("2-entertain") an e-mail about that. They replied saying that there were contractual and pricing reasons for the "missing" bands. I said in that case they shouldn't have called the box set "definitive"! They then told me they would look into releasing another DVD but couldn't make any promises.
So at least they answered my e-mail, and with something reasonably positive, which in my experience is unusual for these type of organisations.
Thats good news (even if I'm being a bit optimistic). There's so much in the archives that should be unearthed, even if securing the rights to all the acts is an absolute handfull
takes me right back to when i was 12 ,bands actually played instruments god bless you mike, dan, chris, carl, mark lee,and i cant spell graeme so suggs it is then.
i saw this on tv first time round and then live 1 week later. Suggs was heckled about the performance on tv and he said "Fuck the old Grey Whistle test". looks good now though. saw them last night at Montreux. still fantastic and the whole audience singing and dancing. best gig of the festival so far.
i watched this on the old grey when i was 15,my god i was blown away, raw energetic young madness i just love this group, and in two weeks time i will be watching them again,C,MON NUTTY BOYS LETS AV IT
