  • I wish we could look back at the bad old days and say Rap was shit but its the otherway round

  • First time I've seen this one and it brings back some great memories Two Tone suits, Doc Martens, Ska Nights, etc bring back those days....

  • I was at my grandads one sunday morning back in the early 80's and this song came on the radio. Grandad listened for a few moments with disapproval, and deduced that the guy singing should be thrown in the bloody River Nile!

Everytime I hear this, it always reminds me of that time.

    Btw, I LOVE Madness

  • TV Lacks a great Music show like The Old Grey Whistle Test

  • this how ska supposed to sound

  • mad as socks!

  • Me and my bro used to go nuts for this tune. We had a wooden board with green material on it for laying jigsaws on, we used to carry it round our neighbour's house and use it as a mini stage to go nutty on to madness to entertain them. Poor old sods must have thought we were mental.

  • The toes tapping.

  • Saw them live at the Hot Club in Philly back in the day. Best live show ever!!

  • aboslutely fucking amazing, i wish i was around in those days. one day i hope ska like this makes a comeback

  • MADNESS!!::D:DD:D:D:

  • sugs is my hero

  • im a aspiring saxaphone player and this saxaphone player is my hero!

  • MADNESS!

  • Damn ...these guys musta been GOOOD... that performance quality back in 79 on an analog sound LIVE set could only come from a great band. Wow! Sounds almost like the damn record!!!!

  • every band sounds incredible on the old grey whistle test. got to give a hand for the sound engineers on that show. not only did they pick fantastic fucking bands, but they knew exactly how to record them well. akin to bbc radio one.

  • Bands back then still had talent and had to play something, they couldn't just lipsync their way through songs on TV like they do now. Sounds of punk/newwave (Ska as it was called back then), brings back memories of high school from the mid 80's

  • Have never been a big Madness fan but viewed this many years ago. Great to see it again. As per previous comments so much energy. "Shut up and dance". Suggs was'nt kidding. How could anyone keep still to this?

  • WICKED N WILD RIDDIM HOLD i RASTA FAR i i i I REST MY CASE !

  • what a superb sound for a live set, very impressed!!!!!

  • Dad dancing now: Madness and Ska

Dad dancing in twenty years: 50 Cent and hip hop.

    I rest my case.

  • There is absolutely no proof of that!

    **Throws case away**

  • My case is 50 per cent proof

  • fantastic performance. so much energy! nothing these days even come close, and i'm only 20!

  • check out Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra

  • @completecontrol77 you are, indeed, so right mate! I'm 31 years old, born in 1979, and Madness is the band of my childhood! no such divine voice nowadays! that's for sure mate! now it's only one bullshit music which follows another crap, etc. etc. yours sincerey, Aviad, Israel! LONG LIVE MADNESS!!!!!!!!

  • @aviadmei SINCERELY!!!!

  • @completecontrol77 glad to hear only 20. and the relevance is?

  • @baldystewart ...the relevance of mentioning the age is obvious: that he can appreciate good music. Most people his age right now only listen to NEW stuff...hip-hop, reggaeton, pop, etc. He doesn't suffer from the generational gaps. That's why he has all those thumbs up.

  • @completecontrol77 thats rad man! im only 26 my 1st concert was the Madness reunion my dad took me i was in like 5th grade!

  • @completecontrol77 Yeah, when I went to see them, there was SO SO much energy, so I know what you mean, and I'm 13!

  • @completecontrol77 i was 20 when i saw madness at the liverpool empire, good for you young man to make a great statement.nowadays its all about drive by shootings and chicks asses NO IMAGINATION. wish i could take you back in time to the jam, clash, ian dury, stranglers, buzzcocks, undertones you would have fitted in im sure Take care mate

  • @completecontrol77 And I'm only 14.. your point? :L

  • @completecontrol77 And I'm only 14.. your point? :L

  • Absolutely fantastic.............. I've been a fan for 30 years and this is my first time watching......... Fookin' brill.......... NB11

  • 2:47.....cool as fuck

  • Got the lot on vinyl. They can play, unlike the shite in the charts now. Best years of my life, Great time to be young when they graced the charts. Lee is a god on that sax. Simon Cowell not fit to kiss their boots.

  • Fan of some 25 years standing....just saw them for the first time 2 weeks ago at V Festival on the Gold Coast Australia...Su-fookin'-perb...nothing comes close...Nutty Boys!!!

  • Madness was simply great back in their prime. Lots of energy and effort into their music.

    SPARTA?!?!

  • Two words.... Fucking genius !

  • I'm gonna drink 6 beers and listen to that again....

  • skalicious

  • madness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is the best

  • Did "Madness" ever do a gig in Cairo? Recorded on the banks of the river Thames near Fulham Hammersmith. Yeah in 1979 they sent my "Giro to Cairo" and we were, all boracic lint skint, since then. The only night boat to Cairo leaves from Alexandria up river.

  • I remember watching this when it was originally broadcast, I was 16, that was 30 years ago and I still think it is as good as it was then, I'm sure they did Bed & Breakfast that night too, I'm pretty sure the shit they're bringin out now will also sound as good in 30 years, thank god for pop idol, girls aloud n that.....

  • It is pretty amazing that nearly everything done at the Grey Whistle Test I really enjoy. I love Two Tone and Ska!

  • Absolute class!

Apart from El Thommo theyre all moving!

    And so am I!

  • This excellent song is featured on January the 13th of 'The Song For Today', written by Jimmie Oliver.

  • Are you sure?

  • raw

  • who are you simon cowell????

  • Just a Madness-geek of some years :) Probably heard this played on over 40 different recordings - this isn't my favourite :(

  • madnesss is always goooooood

  • Just remember they were still a bit green at the time, not the band they were when they got big. And the track was intended to be Sax Heavy from the outset.

  • Exactly and the studio version was for the little wankers anyway

  • Its a live, late 70s recording in a TV studio - the audio is hardly likely to be spot on is it?

    Sounds good to me :)

  • great dancing ....great band

  • this is the coolest shit i have ever seen

  • floats off down the river nile!

  • this is great. I'm 30 and I loved them as a child. This old grey whistle footage is fantastic! thankyou

  • tell u wot. a near to 30 years old this. mind still love it

  • this is a lads track - on of the best (out of many good uns) that they did....takes me back.

  • There was so much left off the Whistle Test DVDs. Stupid not to release more.

  • I sent them ("2-entertain") an e-mail about that. They replied saying that there were contractual and pricing reasons for the "missing" bands. I said in that case they shouldn't have called the box set "definitive"! They then told me they would look into releasing another DVD but couldn't make any promises.

So at least they answered my e-mail, and with something reasonably positive, which in my experience is unusual for these type of organisations.

  • Thats good news (even if I'm being a bit optimistic). There's so much in the archives that should be unearthed, even if securing the rights to all the acts is an absolute handfull

  • takes me right back to when i was 12 ,bands actually played instruments god bless you mike, dan, chris, carl, mark lee,and i cant spell graeme so suggs it is then.

  • i saw this on tv first time round and then live 1 week later. Suggs was heckled about the performance on tv and he said "Fuck the old Grey Whistle test". looks good now though. saw them last night at Montreux. still fantastic and the whole audience singing and dancing. best gig of the festival so far.

  • Have a listen to the pressuredrop soundcast. I found out about the pietasters through it. The OC Supertones are not pure-bred ska, but i think they are awesome.
