@changtianbailang He says that the song is called "The Highwayman", although I don't think it's the real title or even a real song, could not find anything in the web.
Covers are maybe so popular as people like what they already know- and it takes no effort to listen to what you already know, as you can anticipate the bits you like-
This holds true of a musician's ''Classic'' songs- the public only ever want to hear the classics, and new material is greeted with horror!
Big Train definitely knocks spots off ''Little Britain''.
"isn't it strange! Ask for crap like Jackojackson, or anyother north American Crap, and Youtube are always ready to Oblige. But when we in England ask for our favorites all swe get is Ab use from this shit!! Cut the crap youtube, and let real talent in."
I've seen Ralph McTell live twice. He played and sang wonderful songs.
The audience gave polite applause during the show and finally TOTALLY FREAKED OUT when he played "streets of london" as an encore. I felt so sorry for him.
First time I saw this, I had no idea who Ralph McTell was. I thought it was a parody of Bob Dylan. The joke behind the sketch works for both, I think...
Really funny as we went to see him last week and as Ralph tried to plug his new album by playing songs from it we're all sat there waiting for...you guessed it....Street of London....lol
Ralph McTell is great - AND he comes from Croydon (as do I). In fact, I believe his original lyric was 'Streets Of Croydon', which makes sense when you listen to the words as I can certainly remember a time when this place was fairly rough. Believe me, Croydon has come a LONG way in the last 40 years.
As for Ralph? I hear the great man released a new record last week.
What a funny clip this is - it sums it all up perfectly!
@TVsMrHappyTalk He did. I bought it when I went to his concert in Derby last week. He signed it for me and I told him he was an inspiration to my guitar playing and his new album is a great example of how many people still know you are a great artist despite being labelled as a one-hit wonder by the mainstream.
Billy Connolly called him "one of Britain's greatest songwriters" so that was enough to get ME interested and i wasn't disappointed.
I found this SO funny. Being a recent convert to the works of Ralph McTell, and knowing of the undeserved "one-hit wonder" tag he's given due to "Streets of London", this is most defintiely a big "screw you" to the "fans" who only know Ralph for this song.
Incidentally, "Streets of London" is the one Ralph McTell song that I don't care too much for.
a song very popular during the folk revival. If you haven't heard it before, you can still get the "spirit" of the sketch by imagining it's Bob Dylan and "Blowing in the Wind"
I don't think it's making fun of McTell at all. It's pointing the finger at people who refuse to listen to anything but the 1 song they know by an artist. The reaction of the crowd as he tries so hard to get them to listen to something he put as much feeling into ... says it all.

this is a disgrace an insult to ralf..

At least Bob is more than a one hit wonder though...I do feel a bit sorry for Ralph, although he probably set himself up for life with that song which is quite astonishing really.
That's not entirely true, it's pretty obvious that 'Streets Of London' was his only true success and although he's continued to grace the folk circuit and does workshops at festivals etc. your average Joe would be hard pressed to name even one other song of Ralph's - which is a bit sad really.
This sketch is about the fact that he is a 'one hit wonder'....better than no hits I suppose but it is a bit embarrassing for the poor ol' fella.
lots of arguing here! I thought the sketch was about how there aren't many chords used in mainstream folk therefore if you swop a couple of them around you get a whole different song. Sorry if that offends!

Nothing - these people just want to believe that he is a sad one hit wonder. They have no clue that he withdrew from that section of the music scene ("pop") by his own choice ;-)
its not taking the piss out of mc tell. theyre taking the piss out of the people who go to gigs and only want one song. if anything the video is supporting your arguement. ur clearly just too retarded to get that.
lols are people this afraid of change lools?? this reminds me of britains got talent wen the audience start to boo or shout OFF at first when they dnt like sumfin then start cheering after!! bludy manters lools..^ ^
You are right, but some stupid and ignorant people just love to think that it is this way, because they may have heard some drunk person shout it a couple of times in their local club or similar.
In later years he has often managed to avoid playing that song, and almost no one has been unhappy about it, because he has so many other great songs along with an amazing voice and his virtuoso performing of difficult ragtime stuff and country blues to make up for it.
Ha, but that is SO wrong - so many other wonderful Ralph songs that the stupid and ignorant DJs and presenters unfortunately don't know or don't want to hear.
So what?! It's still talentless and brainless, not to mention ignorant and mean. But how would the BBC people be able to spot that - it's exactly the same type of selfgood, no-brains PC-idiots who work in the rest of the organisation. Seems it has seen its best days - no idea why we pay for the crap anymore.
No, I did not - he turned off comments long after I had stopped commenting there, because they became more and more insane and hateful. Nice try.
Good ! - hopefully that will keep you occupied for a while then. Did maybe you consider the possibilty that I was being sarcastic? Behaving like they do? Not that I think these people will ever read this - these actor and comedy people are usually so above the rest of us.
But it helps telling "them", what I think of their poor and mean writing skills ;-)
BBC used to be great quality - now it's mostly trash and PC-idiots (they have admitted this (PC) themselves recently).
I am not arguing ;-) I was just commenting on this lousy, very mean and unfair sketch - and how talentless the writers must be, if they have to stoop this low.
So why do you argue on YT ? ;-)
Nice language btw. - really impressed here - not to mention the total lack of logic. Think I can guess what you meant though.
It doesn't say anywhere that you are not allowed to make critical remarks - you on the other hand do NOT have to read them, if you don't like them, do you ?
McTell himself has been reported as saying that the "Streets of London' had been a two-edged sword earlier in his career - and detracted from his other work - So this is just parodying (and exaggerating of course ) McTell's own opinion. So I don't think you need to be so defensive - Ralph McTell can fight his own fights - if he feels the need,
defend anything. He has written tons of wonderful songs that people unfortunately don't know (in general).
I am NOT - I am just saying that it's really
poor writing and very mean. Then I get attacked for saying this, because people simply want to believe it's like this and have no clue what the truth is. As you can see from the reactions, many people take it for face value, since they don't know this.
The fact that McTell has written tons of wonderful songs that people "in general" don't know - is not missed by the authors of this sketch. That is the whole point - as someone said above - this is taking the mickey out of so called "fans" whose real knowledge is very shallow. This sketch is pro McTell. If you got off your high-horse for a few seconds you would see that it is not trying to be mean to Ralph at all. Step back from the trees and see the wood...
It's only in your head, and in the heads of these talentless sketchwriters.
He broke away from the pop scene by his own free will, and decided to stay with his roots. He could have had lots of hits, IF he had wanted to be a part of that part of the music industry, but he didn't feel comportable with it.
So you see - no one has forced anyone actually :-)
谢谢。Thank you by the way.
