Gandalf is the purest good guy there is...

Saruman is like dead good at inventing stuff (like explosives and anti cavalry pikes to fight Rohan) but is flawed by being too aggressive, too snobbish and manipulative.

When Gandalf was 'revived' as a White Wizard, his true power became incredible (though still not quite as powerful as Sauron) Only a few beings were ever selected for 'revival' by Eru (God) As it happens, Glorfindel the Elf was one of them - who also died fighting a Balrog; during the Fall of Gondolin in the 1st Age.
