Common mistakes made by most of Buddhists, chanting is just a way to cultivate one's loving kindness and to quench one's thirst (greediness). The main Buddha's teaching is to practice meditation. It is the way to reach equanimity, it is the only way to obtain enlightenment. Vice versa, chanting helps to improve one's concentration on meditation as well. I hope everyone get this clear.

Moksha is EARNED, not given, and that is the essential difference between Moksha & Heaven. One can beg for Gods mercy, grovel like a dog, and then be allowed to taste the pleasures of a flesh-pot heaven, but one cant beg for Moksha, because Enlightenment is acquired thru knowledge. Even if the Teacher takes pity on a student who turned in a bad paper, and passes him, it doesnt mean the student had suddenly acquired the knowledge. Reach for the Higher goal, reach for Moksha

There were differences of opinion and conflicting memories in the council.
Opinion of Kayshapa and Ananda who were prominent disciples of Buddha were given preference.
A hundred years later, a second council at Vesali was held.

@babylonaliking Also, Buddhism originally is meant as a teaching to "end suffering." No God/god is originally included in the teachings. But, there is a pantheon of gods (along with other Buddhas and Bodhisattvas) that appear in the Flower Garland Sutra and the Lotus Sutra.
Also, to reiterate, I have been reading some scholarly articles and it says that the Judeo-Christian God was originally just a tribal mountain God.... Not really almighty as it says in the scriptures Torah, Bible and Quran.

@babylonaliking Another point about the Buddha being an idol. Actually, the Buddha in the Dharmakaya sense is really Nothingness. Transcending, yet existing within all forms(illusionary/ material forms; since materials are inconstant). There are 3 types of Buddhist Bodies(Trikaya, Tri-3 and kaya-body): Dharmakaya, formless Truth; Nirmanakaya, physical body (Siddhartha Gautama); and Sambhogakaya, reward body (Amitabha, Buddha body from gaining enlightenment after finishing vow as Bodhisattva).

Common mistakes made by most of Buddhists, chanting is just a way to cultivate one's loving kindness and to quench one's thirst (greediness). The main Buddha's teaching is to practice meditation. It is the way to reach equanimity, it is the only way to obtain enlightenment. Vice versa, chanting helps to improve one's concentration on meditation as well. I hope everyone get this clear.

I was born and raised as in Theravada tradition.I have studied Mahayana and Tibetan tradition and love them.The Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh are my spiritaul teachers.I have never heard of the important sutras such as the Diamon and the Heart sutra before.
Thank vivovimed for wonderful chanting.
May all being be happy and at peace.May people of all faiths and religions live in harmony.The world is big enough for all of us.

Moksha is EARNED, not given, and that is the essential difference between Moksha & Heaven. One can beg for Gods mercy, grovel like a dog, and then be allowed to taste the pleasures of a flesh-pot heaven, but one cant beg for Moksha, because Enlightenment is acquired thru knowledge. Even if the Teacher takes pity on a student who turned in a bad paper, and passes him, it doesnt mean the student had suddenly acquired the knowledge. Reach for the Higher goal, reach for Moksha

rodo: Ideas are everywhere, you are right that a Buddha could have come from anywhere, but the point of the post was that if such a Buddha had been born in Europe or muslim lands he wouldn't have a chance to propagate his ideas. He would have been branded a heretic and killed off. His ideas burnt tobe lost forever! The fact is such Buddhas were born in Europe, read european history of those who were killed off because they opposed the teachings of the church.

gallant: maybe but christ was stil a link between judaism and christianity. Both religions are basically the same except jews don't think he was the last messaiah. Also jews have taken countless abuse from christians over the years. Whereas the Buddha broke completely from Hinduism. This is not demeaning Buddhism - but there would be no Buddhism today without Hinduism. If the Buddha had been born in Europe or muslim lands in the middle ages, he would have been branded a heretic and murdered! Until recent years, Western & muslim lands were barren except for one religion each! They just killed anyone who wanted to start his own religion or chose to break away from christianity or islam. america was settled by christians fleeing christians!

at @sugunathota, true there's a possibility of Buddha being killed; however you need to consider that in India the chances were similar. The only reason Buddha was more respected is because he was a prince, and Ananda his most trusted disciple was also a prince. Whoever dared to kill a prince... OUCH!! I'm sure there were many who wanted to kill Buddha, but were unsuccessful for such fear... This is my theory, of course.

Like, Buddha enlightenment could only be carried with the land under his feet (India). Thus, the future Buddha will come from India ( Maitreya)

Buddha is a heavenly teacher who got the eternal life like others. I am a catholic and buddhist also, I think God give all kind of way to people get in the eternal life, the last was through Jesus Christ. However, Buddha is my heavenly teacher give instructions to be more self-controlled and self-discipline that help me gain eternal life.

Buddha said, "I am higher than mortals and angels" and that He is the King of Dharma. He reveals Himself as Amitabha Buddha, the transcendental Buddha who is the purest and in the spiritual realms, who is bowed down to.
He says that if one calls His name, once, twice, and even up to merely ten times with complete faith and trust in Him, He will take that person to paradise, to the Pure Land and to never return in the material planets. :)
