Mostly gangs have chased out the whites business and uphill residence. Niggas have burned down houses that white people moved in. How do I know? My brother is one of those niggas. Downhill (Past Michigan)? There latinos, mexicans, some blacks, and some whites. I don't know too many people down there because I don't go down there. I have friends and brothers who got shot and beat up by the latino and mexican boys down there. Don't get me started on the schools. Some I wouldnt send my pet rat to.
Well my people are from in and around the roseland area (maple park/rag town area) and truthfully... my family has shown me pictures of the way it used to be and i see what it is now... it has changed SO much and I am so sad to see it that way... the same could be said about the garfield park area... i have family over that way and they have shown me pictures of what it used to look like and i am happy to se that they are actually beginning to take some pride in their area and are rebuilding it.
Hey doTHEhrimshfl - It's not Fengler!!! If's Fenger. Don't your family even know how to pronounce the name of their own school right?! No wonder Roseland went to shit when the blacks took over - they didn't pay no "attinshin" in school!
according to my father one of the gang fights during the late 60's race riots had about 30 roseland/pullman whites vs about 80 blacks coming from up near douglas and chatham to fight the whites in roseland on the corner of 112th & wallace at fengler high
i think the white gang consisted of members of the 111th st. pimps and the bumtown gents while the blacks were (as he said) probably vicelords and p.stones from the 60's
in the end tho it seems the blacks won roseland considering how roseland today is about +90% black....but the area was no stranger to violence and crime before the blacks moved in...in fact back then it was very common for police to instigate violence from the start and encourage white youth to attack blacks on sight
so what ended up happening was these 30 whites armed with chains and bats and knives (no guns) went straight at the 80 blacks (most of whom were fighting bare-fisted) and ended up actually gaining the upper hand and dispersing the entire group of blacks away from fengler high
don't forget about the economic collapse of roseland in the 80's? because black people move into a neighboorhood, that causes entire commercial areas to close down? was the closing of the east side steel mills in the 80's related to the poverty in the area? think about it.
I grew up on Kensington ave. Went to St. Anthony's school then Pullman school and finally graduated from Metcalfe elemantary. Lived there for 25 years and moved to Cal city where all Mexicans from Roseland move to. Man Roseland was a way better looking area back in the 80's & 90's.
I grew up in roseland, pullman, cottage grove heights area and I loved it even though it was really wild in the 90's. We used to call it the Wild hundreds.
For forty some years a great place to live....now, like this music demonstrates, it is depressing...not politcally correct to say why though, maybe some of that change that Obama wants to make to the rest of the country!
My dad worked at the smelly paint factory Sherwin Williams from 1959 to 1987 when he passed. I went to Saint Anthony`s and St. Salomea. First the Italian School then the Polish School back then there were already lines to cross and our family was one of few Mexican families....1959 to 1968 on one side of the tracks and then to the other side Prairie and 119th from 1968 to 1976. Remind any one of penny wax candy?
Im curious to know what type of people lived down the hill. I grow up in Roseland in the 80s. My family moved there in the 70 just when Im sure your family left. Im curious because the homes down the hill are a lot nicer today then those uo the hill. Honestly where families up the hill poorer then those down the hill?
Graduated from Holy Rosary in 1974. Last white kid to do so.
Learned early on you take people one at a time reardless of their race. It's about values not money. The US became an oil importer not an oil exporter in 1971 for big picture economic insight. The bands Styx and Chicago hail from here.
I grew up on 117th Pl. just down the hill from Roseland Auto Parts in the 3 flat from '74 to '96. My name is Scott Pearson, but the family name is Panozzo. It has been many a year since I've seen the old neighborhood. I went to St. Anthony's and my first job was even at Pullman Wine. Thank you for the memory refresh.
This memorial tribute to Roseland applies to so many other Chicago neighborhoods. When you think of what a great city Chicago was in the fifties and sixties, and how many safe and affordable neighborhoods there were with good schools, it just makes you sick to your stomach to see Chicago now.
Had to comment. Swim in "Lake Cal." First mustauch was the toxic waste that stuck to your upper lip. Loved Pullman. Deanie And Scottie where are you....
