  • Well, you might like me sometimes and sometimes NOT. This is how it is with my grand children. Love to you, Lotte.

  • I wish you were my grandmother

  • That's very good, but I can't see anything about the Chicago zither club. I know a few of their members. Thank you for your lovely message. Greetings from Lotte.

  • We added this video on our zither ensemble page, the Chicago Zither Club, on Facebook. Thank you! You have done a wonderful job presenting one of the most beautiful sounding instruments ever. You are a delight to watch and listen to. Please let others know about the Chicago Zither Club on Facebook. Our page just went up today.

  • Yes, a few too many at times. You should try it. Greetings from Lotte.

  • thirty eight strings.. awesome.

  • Thank you. Vielen Dank. happy days, Lotte.

  • Very well done.

Wo stand Deine Wiege?

    In Herzlichkeit Fritz

  • And I love your video. thank you. Thank you for your comment. Lotte.

  • You are amazing.

  • I like this comment, thank you.

  • So are you. Thank you, Lotte.

  • You are wonderful! :)

  • Shirley Abicair only sang on "This Girl". I was disappointed there was no zither so I made up for it by playing this !!

  • the way she talks...it sounds like its lines from a movie

  • I recognize the tuning layout. The cello is identical, but I don't understand the need for the extra high G string. Why was that put in there?

  • Don't know where? Happy days, Lotte.

  • U have way more views then Me lol

    -Charlotte

  • I am having problems with answering. Tyring later.

  • I just received a 31 string zither from a friend, it has no strings, but are finding strings very expensive? Perhaps, is it incorrect to use autoharp strings instead?

  • Well, as you can see, it is not anything like those. Strings yes, but totally different in the layout and stringing. Good luck . Greetings from Lotte.

  • I have been thinking about buying one of these. I can play both harp and guitar, is a zither anything like those?

  • Thank you for your nice message. Do you play a zither or are you going to start? Why not? Many greetings from Lotte.

  • Thank you so much for your nice message. Do you play a zither or are you going to start? Why not? Greetings from Lotte.

  • What an amazing instrument, beautifully played too, and some very interesting explanations. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge!

  • The show girlfriends sent me here lol

  • Nice to hear from you, thank you. yes, definitelly too many strings, Dulcimer is nice too. Greetings from Lotte.

  • A Beautiful instrument Beautifully played - Way too many string for me I'll stick to playing Dulcimer

  • Yes it is quite a job, with new strings especially. A guitar would be easier. Happy days and greetings from Lotte.

  • imagine tuning that thing... must be a pain

  • ._.

  • Nice to read your comment. Thank you so much. By the way, if you want a zither, I have one packed up to go on Ebay. Let me know. Bye and happy days, from Lotte.

  • @switchest26 Thank you. Danke schoen. Lotte.

  • hallo

  • @lotte1935 having problems.

  • This is a wonderful introduction to the zither. I really want to learn how to play this, but I can't find a zither to buy. I just want a simple zither with chords, since I am not a musician. :) Well done.

  • OooooooooooooooH-- if only you knew. But, thank you. Sometimes I can be sweet. Greetings from Lotte.

  • You seem so sweet!

  • More news for my grand son. Thank you, nice to be wanted as Grandma. Liebe Gruesse, Lotte. (Kind regards).

  • You're the german grandma I always wanted.

  • I will have to show this to my grand son. Thank you for your message. Greetings from Lotte.

  • Thank you for sharing your knowledge of music. I watched this and thought, "hey I want a grandmother like that!" lol.

  • Great instrument, awesome video! greetings from México!

  • @bassman19889 Thank you bassman fro Mexico, Happy to hear from you. Greetings from Lotte.

  • I wonder what that means. Hopefully something good. Bye, Lotte.

  • Állva kell citerázni:)

  • you are a very sweet lady, thank you for the tutorial and for the love for music!

  • @skatastolako Thank you for your nice message. Don't know about the 'sweet lady' though. Happy days, greetings from Lotte.

  • Playing zither helps me elude cystitis and I have a bandolier in my escritoire and secretaire.

  • you look like agatha christie :)

  • @Itsbeavis Hi there. I had to look up what Agatha Christie looks like. She is not too ugly, so I take it as a compliment. Thank you. Happy days, Lotte.

  • @Itsbeavis You chose your name on purpose, of course.

I had never heard of a Zither until it was mentioned in a Twilight Zone episode titled Mr. Bevis.

Some resemblance of an autoharp but sounds more like a guitar. Interesting.

  • Thank you you're great!

  • @fioridicactus Thank you. Love your videos and music. Greetings from Lotte.

  • Grussli Lotte!

I play the harp from Mexico, you can see my You Tube videos by searching on 'Chucumite' in the YouTube browser. I can't imagine playing both melody and rhythm with the same hand!! I would love to play zither as I love German music very much. I play many other instruments, so it would be a new challenge! Thank you for your videos.

    John

  • Thank you very much for the lesson & great insight into what you are doing.

    Once again many thanks.

    Steve

  • @SteveBrownOfficial Thank you dear Steve. I was very happy to receive your message. Greetings from Lotte and Sydney.

  • Are There "Left" Handed ones because i play guitar righthanded and the frets might be easyer for me :)

  • @GibsonLesJosh

Hello. I have never seen a left handed zither and I doubt that there are any around. But of course, all is possible. Sorry I can't be of help. Greetings from Lotte.

  • My zither got 64 strings

  • @fireon3 Hello, hello, I think you must have two zithers glued together or something strange is happening your way. I have not seen one. Maybe it is a different instrument altogether. Can you play it? Good luck. Greetings form Lotte.

  • Can somebody help me find strings for a fretless zither, or even a manufacturer of strings within the UK that will do custom sizes. Thanks!

  • thanks for the video, I like your boyant personality! haha. I hope you don't mind me asking, but how much did your zither cost? im looking to buy a very similar one. Any recommendations? thanks in advance.

  • @VoodooChile1988 Haha, BOYANT? Thank you. I like it. My zither I bought a long time ago and paid about $800.- for it. Look on Ebay, I often see zithers for sale. There was one the other day for $150.- try it. You might be lucky. All the best and thank you for your message. Greetings from Lotte.

  • wow das is ja toll =)

ich mag das video total ^^

echt toll dass du das gemacht hast,

    ein großes lob von mir

  • @Kroesustube Ja, ja, SAUCOOL. Das gefaellt mir. Das Motto ist: Never give up. Somit, danke und liebe Gruesse von Lotte.

  • im play zither too

  • @bigStark2 Good to hear from you. Keep playing. Greetings from Lotte.

  • Im play Zither too

  • nice

  • My dad has a zither he got from my grandfather. I wish I could play it but it needs to be cleaned and tuned.

But the good thing is my dad said he'll get it tuned and such for me if I want to learn how to play it. :)

And you play beautifully by thw way! :D

  • As a young man with intermediate guitar experience as my only intstrument these exotic string instruments are extremely interesting...

  • Perhaps you should try out the zither. It's fun. Thank you for your message. Greetings from Lotte.

  • Madam Lotte,

As a guitarist, I came across your video researching the zither and oud, and I must say, I am impressed. Your style of playing left me informed and enlightened. Especially at the end when you played CMAJ and C7 on the sympathetic strings.

Thanks to you, I just might take that extra step.

  • Good to hear from you and thank you for the nice compliments. Maybe there will be a zither for you to follow the guitar? Would be nice. Happy days and liebe gruesse von Lotte.

  • Only 28 strings!

  • Hello, hello. Yes some zithers are with 28 strings. Mine has 38 of which I only use about 28. The other 10 are the contra bass strings and I don't need them. They are for the very serious players, which I am also, but in a lighter fashion.

Happy days and greetings from Lotte.

  • wow thats hella crazy. I could never play an instrument like that. You rock thats awesome =)

  • Hi, love your "you rock". New version for me. Thank you and I send you greetings from Sydney, Lotte.

  • Lotte , you are so wonderful , your accent reminds me of my mothers from germany ,The two of you would make wonderful friend,s she is from pforzheim , but i just wanted to say i remember my father always talking about the zither but never really knew what one looked like or even sounded like , you are so gifted to make such beautiful sounds with such a difficult looking instrument , curently i am learning the clasical guitar ,and also violin , Your zither sounds like it can sound also spanish!

  • What a lovely message. Thank you. Maybe you should get yourself a zither? Learn to play it? Say hello to your Mum. I would love to be able to play the guitar really well, it's a great instrument also.

Have fun, happy days and greetings from Lotte.

  • Thank you so much for the vid !

It helped me to commit to an ebay bid.

    and i got it, Yeah!

It needs some work but should be playable with a little bit of TLC.

I just love all kinds of old instraments .... if only they could talk, what a story would be told!

    Any way Thanx again.

    peace

  • Congratulations, well done.Hope that you will be able to fix it up and learn to play. Let me know. Greetings from Lotte.

  • re mcgenetics comments, I totally agree. Lotte you are an inspiration. I'm now 50 and I lost my nan when I was 21. She loved music and so do I. Now I'm having to buy a zither off of Ebay! Lotte please can we adopt you, I would share you with mcgenetics and everything!!!!! Lesson for the day....make the most of the people you love today, maybe tomorrow it could be to late.

  • Hello and thank you. I might be a bit old for adoption but not too old to have a bit of fun and playing the zither. Good luck with buying a zither. Greetings to you. Lotte.

  • why have a zither 38 strings bur there are only 26 letters in the alphabet? So it is clear that you onliy need 26! this woman is crazy!!! she can´t count!

  • Yes funny. You know, I only use about 26 of the strings, so maybe I am smart? Have a happy day. Greetings from Lotte.

  • My ancestors came from Silesia. My grandmother also my mother use to play the Zitter.

  • Maybe you should learn to play. It's not easy, but it can be done. Good luck and greetings from Lotte.

  • what is this circle under zither

    ???

  • It is to let the sound come out. The resonance.

Otherwise it would all be caught up inside and wouldn't sound very good. Have fun. Happy days, Lotte.

  • I LOVE this lady! My grandma's are both gone, I wish she was my grandma.

  • I love you too. I have two grandchildren and I was ready to have at least a dozen. Sorry to hear you are without grandmas, sometimes they can be of great support and sometimes also quite annoying. My 18 year old Max can tell on that, but I know he loves me. Be happy. Love from Lotte.

  • Hi Lotte,

What was the name of the melody you were using in this video to illustrate your lesson ?

  • Hello. Thank you for writing to me. The first piece I play has no name. It was my very first piece I learned to play and my teacher just called it 'easy waltz'. The second one is 'Lili Marlen' and at the end 'O sole mio' . Have fun. Bye, bye, Lotte.

  • what a cute grandma:)

  • Hello, yes it's beautiful to be grandmother, we had a big 18th birthday celebration last night for my grandson Max and my granddaughter Georgia was 12 , also yesterday. So, it means the young ones are taking over but I am still kicking nicely. Happy New Year and greetings from Lotte.

  • hi lotte,i havnt played the zither for a long time but will as soon as i get some new strings, happy christmas, from jake.

  • Hello Jake, I am so happy to hear from you again.I have put my little zither away for a while and am writing my autobiography instead. But, I will get back to it again and I hope that you will pick it up again too. Happy new 2010 and happy zithering. From Lotte.

  • hi,lotte ,I got your email,i put something on youtube as well, its me and my mate doug,he is playing the guitar and i am playing the guitar, but i am afraid it's very poor quality because the camera is a cheapy, very distorted, but please view it and i shall put some more on too in the name of jake the banjo, the one that we have put on ,if you wish to look , just type "the trumpet hornpipe".cheers and happy new year lotte, from Jake and Sarah in england.

  • I do apologise for my not very well English...however; I do have to point out that You should have tuned your zihter before recordings, somehow some strings sounds "poor" and should be replaced.

I simply cannot agree about the fact that so called Vienise tuninig is better, cause the other-one (standard tunning) is much more appropriate for classical music, jazz, new music aswell, the vienise is better for volksongs.

After all, I believe that you enjoy in playing and that's the most important.

  • Yes you are quite right, I should not have passed the recording with some string out of tune. My fault. I am not saying, that the Viennese tuning is better but I thank you for your comments. Have a happy Xmas. Regards, Lotte.

  • Hello I am From Canada. I enjoyed your tutorial. I wish I knew where to purchase and the cost of the Zither. I think it sounds beautiful. Do you play the Movie Theme.. Tennasee waltz was beautiful. I am also a musician. But play like with no notes. I have to give you 5***** for this wonderful video thank you young lady.

    Ron! From Canada.!

  • Vielen dank, Lotte, das war sehr interessant! Sie spielen das Zitter sehr gut. Ich kaufe Ihr Album! :-)

(sorry - my german is not great) :-)

    Martin

  • Danke, danke.

  • wow you are amazing lady, wish you the best with the albums. I'm learning the guitar and hopefully I'll be able to produce such amazing tunes.

  • Thank you. Wish I could play the guitar better, too late now, fingers too clumsy. But yes, of course you will do what I did. Just hang in it. Greetings from Lotte.

  • Probieren geht ueber Studieren !! Versuch es nur, es macht Spass. Liebe Gruesse aus Sydney, Lotte.

  • What a lovely message. Thank you. I wish I could play the guitar better, I have big problems at times with my recordings, -- I play the guitar along with my zither --and my fingers on the guitar are just sooooooo clumsy. ---- Why don't you try the zither??-- God bless you too and I send you greetings from Aussi Land, Lotte. (::)

  • Szia :):)

I watch this, and you are so very lovely!!! :):)

I'm a pro guitar player for many years..

I love the sound of the Zither!! :) I would love to take up this instrument...

    Thank you for this video...

It makes my heart sing on a cold day...

    Sincerely,, THANK YOU.... GOD BLESS...

  • sound nice

  • Hello there and I thank you. Greetings from Lotte.

  • Zither is Beautiful! I love you lady! Thank REM for introducing me to this

  • Nice message from you and I thank you. Who is REM ?? Greetings from Sydney, Lotte.

  • Thanks for responding. REM is a famous american rock and roll band....they have a song called 'zither' but I am not sure if it is real zither.

How long did it take you to learn? You must play be ear

  • Hi again. Nice to hear back from you. Yes, I play most of my pieces by ear, - something complicated , I look into the music sheet but I am not very good reading it. I started when I was 12 and always had this little zither with me wherever I went. My best friend. Happy days, Lotte.

  • Thanks for your encouragement! If I ever get to play at the Opera house, Sydney, you get a free ticket, front row and a glass of champagne to celebrate. I play sometimes in front of audience but I can't get over the "zittering" inside me so I mess up always.

How do u play the G7 on the accompaniment

side, Lotte? My ex.zither teacher (who doesn't play anymore) said it can't be played.

Greetings from Mittelfranken, Germany from Happymum7

  • Hello again happy Mum. You should have seen me 'zittering'a at my Opera House performance. Still don't know how I did it.---Playing anything fast like the Cancan, you can simply NOT pick out the 7th chords, so you just stay with the majors. Your ex teacher is quite right. Slow play YES, for 7th. Have fun. Liebe Gruesse Lotte.

  • Thank you for your advice. I am viewing your "Tutorial Video" before I begin practising my Zither. "The Tenessee Walz" walzed in my head

the whole day since I heard u yesterday so it helps me to work and walz at the same time doing my household chores.

  • I have a 32 string zither. Anybody know where I can get strings?

  • I buy my strings either from a music shop or through Ebay.

  • good on you, happy mum. Trouble is, you have to know which ones. Just had a message from somebody who bought strings and they were too short. -- How are you doing?? Still dancing around your dog?? Have fun. Lotte,

  • I'm doing better with my zither. Played twice this week - at an old folks gathering and at a 70-yr old birthday celebration. Dancing around my dog??

I think my dancing is worse than my zithering!

    Thanks for your encouragement!

  • Hi Lotte, I saw your video and am very thankful for it because it inspires me to continue playing my zither. I was on the verge of quitting playing the zither. Played the zither more than 10 years and practise regularly but my performance is terrible. Thanks once again for the inspiration! If I ever get to play with the philharmonicsymphony orchestra, you get a free ticket and on the front row, but it probably won't happen in the next 20 years!!

  • Don't ever give up something so valuable. You have played for 10 years, keep it going and I WILL come to see you at the OPERA house Sydney.- I did it, so can you. Good luck. Many greetings from Lotte.

  • Bravo, bravo. Freut mich sehr. Wie steht's mit den Fingern? Weh-weh. ?? Gruss aus Australien? Wo stecken Sie denn? Let me know.

  • Hello and thank you for showing this beautiful little zither on video. What a little jewel, but so unusual with just 4 strings on the fretboard. Will you have a go at it?? - There is the 'Hofbrauhaus' in Melbourne and Helmut is the owner and plays the zither. Maybe you should visit him. He used to teach the zither also. Say hello to him from me. Liebe Gruesse, Lotte.

  • You Are Just Darling ! And With A Beautiful instrument

  • Thank you, what more can I say? Dankeschoen. Liebe Gruesse Lotte.

  • Greetings right back to you.....:)

I liked your video. You have a natural talent for explaining complicated things in a way that's easily understood..

    Perhaps you're a teacher?

....Anyway.....One thing that comes across very clearly in the video, is that you are a warm hearted person......Someone well worth knowing I think.

    Thankyou for the video!

  • Hello again. No I am not a teacher, FAR too impatient. Glad you like what I am doing. Greetings from Lotte.

  • I think I love you....

  • I haven't had anyone tell me for a long time "I love you",--Nice message, thank you. Greetings from Sydney and Lotte.

  • A little bit of a bold faced plea from what may be a true talent. Zither syncing.

  • Hi, I really don't know how to answer to both your messages. But thank you and I think I feel honoured. Liebe Gruesse, greetings from Lotte.

  • What an instrument! It sounds like the Munich tone gives you a better drone to refer back to as you play. Virtuosic performance. Thanks for sharing.

  • hi Lotte

nice to catch u on the same time as me hope u keeping well sweetheart look forward to the new cd

hope u like the videos i have made using your beautiful music getting a lot of interest in them hope it leads to some sales for your beautiful music

    love and best wishes always

    bc xxx

  • Dear Bernard, your videos are just so beautiful. It must take you a while to put it all together and they are so touching. Thank you for using my music. Keep well with love and good wishes, Lotte.

  • still playing as good as ever nice to watch this video again thankyou Lotte

    your biggest fan bc xxx

  • Hello my biggest fan, thank you. Will be sending you my "TRUE AUSTRIAN" CD soon with the condition that you will yodel along with me. Have fun Bye, Lotte.

  • both these tunings repeat a pitch on two strings. What is the advantage of this/ is the string double stopped?

  • Thank you Bennythewayfarer for your messages. You obviously play the zither and to be very honest, I don't know how to answer your question re a pitch repeat and is the string double stopped? I am at a total loss at what to tell you. Sorry. I just play this instrument to the best of my ability and am no good with theory etc. Keep going. Greetings from Lotte.

  • It would enable a tune to be played on two strings at once - like a mandolin - It would also help tremelo.

I'm guessing here but I can not think of any other reason

  • Yes you are right I think with your guessing. Playing on two strings is what I do a lot. Regards Lotte.

  • what lovely gentlemusic, cheers!

  • Lotte, you are an inspiration! thank you, you made my birthday morning! who knows maybe getting zither for b.day ( ; Jane x

  • Happy birthday!!--- Maybe with the next one you are zithering. Hope so. All the best and greetings from Lotte.

  • Dear Lotte,

I am so excited! in my basement is my grandmother's zither. It needs help and new strings but I'm game to give it a try. I saw another great player on the youtube and I thought I'll never find a instruction book but here you are. I have subscribed and will keep watching.

    Michael in Seattle

  • It looks like I have not replied to your nice message. Don't know what happened. Are you learning to play?? Have fun and happy days. Greetings from Lotte.

  • Charlie is my old pal from High School. he is now director of Music and Entertainment at AMD Corporation Austin Texas

    buzz

  • Thank you,-- could you send me his address? Would be much appreciated, because I really don't know how to get to him. Bye, bye, Lotte.

  • Aw, you're great!
