I wonder if he had a Koran and pushed Islamic faith on his students, or if he had a SATANIC bible, if those calling for his "free exercise of religion" would be singing a different tune. A teacher holds a special position in the classroom and it should not be used to inculcate students into any given faith. But the teacher in this case was a wignut who burned crosses into the flesh of students and he should not be allowed near a classroom.
Mr Freshwater is entitled to his beliefs, but he is not entitled to impose them onto others, particularly in a school where separation of church and state has been upheld over and over. Mr. Freshwater's employer has the right to ban the bible from the classroom as a term of employment.
This is a prime example of the wages of religious mania. For any that doubt it. substitute a Q'uran (or any religious text) for the Bible and rethink the entire thing.
@dex1391 Pally vs Board of Education (1982). "The school has the right to have any religious text banned from the classroom if the book is used as a device to promote a religion."
Freshwater was clearly using the Bible to promote his religious viewpoint, and the school system therefore has the right to ban it's presence under the 1st Amendment.
what kind of kid would let it happen to him? the kind of kid whos brainwashed into believing its ok, which is what happens when u let religious nut cases teach the youth
What Kid would allow that to happen unless he wanted it done? Some experiment going on and he probably volintered. I went to school and that's what guy's do, they volinter to show off. So the teacher made cross, get a life kid. The parent has a right to protest, but making a major scene about it stinks abit. The teacher has a healing meeting in the school with a willing group so what. Everybody is freaking out. Condom handout and teen pregnacy, abortions and suicide go unnoticed. But this isn't.
why did Zaks father take4 months to come fowared to say something. It must not have been as bad as he says. If it were so bad that he couldn't sleep maby his dad should have taken him to the doctor,to have a look at the red mark on his arm that another student saw him doing in the bathroom to himself. Well that could be heresay but then again so could the crap said about John Freshwater. The student played soccer with my son. I've known John,10yrs. I tell you now John is a good man and teacher.

Speaking as someone from the Mount Vernon school district, I'm not offended by John Freshwater having his personal Bible sitting on his classroom desk. Why should Freshwater be forced to hide a symbol of his faith?
The first amendment says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...". The actions of the school to require him to remove the Bible from his desk is an unnecessary intrusion into his religious freedoms.
You should try speaking as someone who possesses a brain. How nice that you're not offended by Freshwater's desk Bible. Are you offended by incompetent teachers who burn crosses on their students' arms, you idiotic jackass?
@mountvernon1805 The principle that amy public school may not promote a religion has been upheld over and over in court.
In light of other class-time activities, it is clear that Mr Freshwater is using a government institution to promote a religion. It is he, not the school that is violating the 1st Amendment, yet the school is liable. The school is within its right to refuse his Bible and religious training from the school as a term of employment.
Freedom of speech is one thing, but so is separation of church and state. You can't teach your religion in a public science class simply because you have freedom of speech. Teachers keep trying to challenge that in courtrooms, and time and time again they are rejected.
Besides...the science teacher held a healing session? He's obviously a nut.
So you've had a lot of experience trying to burn your own flesh bmxtahoe? Either you have no idea what your taking about, or your as wacked out as Freshwater. Either way, your credibility is now gone. Well done.
I went to the school where Freshwater taught and my 8th grade science teacher used the same exact electrostatic device that Freshwater used. It's not even remotely possible for that thing to burn anyone let alone leave a mark.
Okay then, an independent review panel confirmed that that was how the burn took place. Couple that with the fact that he hasn't denied it, not once. He even held a faux healing session for the student(s) involved. Seems he's more concerned with being told he can't have his bible on his desk. If you were in that position, don't you think you'd worry more about people thinking you were a sick twisted sadistic bastard than a religious zealot?
One more thing. Just how many students attend Mt Vernon Public school in grade 8? And how many grade 8 science teachers do they have? Assuming Freshwater wasn't yours, did you have to go through retesting when you entered grade 9 because of his ineptness?
It's all lies. I met him today and there was physical and verbal proof and testimony about how the burn couldn't have happened and how it wasn't a "healing service" at all. It's dumb what the news and lawyers are doing to try and make him seem like a bad guy when all he wants is to have the Bible lying on his desk.
I go to the high school in mount vernon. All I know is that Mr. Freshwater handed out pamphlets telling kids that humans were alive along with the dinosaurs. There was a big rally outside our school at the spirit rock in favor of Freshwater, and after this stuff came out on the news, everyone shut up. The case is still under investigation, and a lot of our teachers know he's a nut. Thanks for posting this though... I've been looking for it all over the place.
does it matter if it was a cross or something else - should a teacher be making any kind of mark on a student? They fire teachers for hugs so I don't see the difference.
