  • And the guitar is .... WHO ?????

  • Can anyone give me the details on this concert? I'd like to watch it all.

  • THE BAND!!!! THE BAND!!!! I wish she still has this guy on guitar.

  • Glad i heard this in the early hours of the morning and didn't have to work hard on understanding the text.Saved FEW BRAIN CELLS THERE. Were there more than 5 sentences in it --if so i missed it or them(if there were more) !

  • absolute perfection. "you got no right to take my joy, and i want it back..." classic.

  • @MrKim2288 Thanks for the info on Doug Pettibone!

  • I try to get all my friends to listen cause of course they have never heard of her! How do you not pick up Rolling Stone and not find out what is hot and what is not? That is how I bought Car Wheels on a Gravel Road! It's the voice though that gets me! Beautiful!

  • Walkin' down Sadlergate in Derby,England past BPM- one of the few stores that sells vinyl records. This was playing over the speaker in the entrance. Hadn't heard Lucinda before,so I stuck my head in the doorway for five minutes. Must've look liked I was stuck- surprised nobody called the fire department. Anyway, I went into town and bought the 'Car wheels' CD. Good choice. Isn't it just great when you have days like that? P.s- Don't forget to keep on lovin' vinyl!

  • That drummer really holds it down.

  • pěkný

  • Bit of a doors thing at the end

  • Im your biggest fan i love this song its my favorite song in the hole world

  • sounds like suzi q

  • @Comofan100 Well then you're just a shithead.

  • One hot damn version of this song - thanks for the upload,,,

  • Sheryl Crow WISHES she was Lucinda Williams.

  • Anger, spite, fire - come enjoy all these things from a superb singer.

The way she curls her lip and belts out that gravelly snarl - so good.

  • I could see ol' John Lennon himself putting this song on one of his albums.

  • @nexthoudini

When reared on Black Eyed Peas, you're not expected to appreciate a performance like this one.

  • @onefodderunit Yeah, because you can tell from a comment what music I was reared on. To tell you the truth, my favorite musician is Elvis Costello, for the great voice and lyrics. Out of today's music, I like Ben Folds, the Old 97s, and a lot of folk. But go ahead, assume my musical rearing simply because I point out how horrid a song "Joy" is, how utterly joyless, repetitive, and awful the music and lyrics are, and how the singing's nothing to write home about either.

  • @nexthoudini

Ben Folds? How ghey. No wonder you don't appreciate this.

  • @onefodderunit I can see how high-class you are by your spelling of "gay". And Ben Folds is always hilarious. There's something to be said about tongue-in-cheek comedy in lyrics; all the best songwriters have senses of humor. Part of the reason why Lucinda Williams doesn't fall into that category. And, uh, I forgot to mention the supremely talented Tim Minchin. But it's not that I don't like this; it's that this is bad music. Untalented drivel. Repetitive pap I don't see how anyone could like.

  • @nexthoudini

Have you ever listened to a Lucinda William's CD? She's an excellent musician with 3 Grammys under her belt so far and was named "America's best songwriter" by Time magazine in 2002. The song is simplistic and a little repetitive, but it has a nice bluesy, gritty riff to it and makes for a good rock song. Williams doesn't have the best voice I've ever heard and would never make it on American Idol, but it works for her.

  • @nexthoudini

Getting sodomized is 'high class' in you book?

Who are you to determine what's good music sounds like. Go listen to ghey Ben.

  • @nexthoudini edit: . . . to determine what good music sounds like.

Williams has more music and stark raw sack in one power chord than the BF flamers combined could muster in an entire performance.

  • @nexthoudini Did you see the CMT "Crossroads" w/Lucinda & Elvis (Costello) from 2001? It was one of the first of that show. Still going strong 9 yrs later.

  • I met Lucinda at Mountain Stage in Charleston, WV and a friend on mine and her and her band went to the Marriott and sat around and talked for couple hours-she is truly a fine person and sooo talented and a kick band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow she looks great and sounds strong here. Great band, yeah, who are those guys. Not her current band.

  • @Brunogirlfriend

This was part of her previous band. Doug Pettibone on guitar had been with her since "World Without Tears.

  • ' 0 '

  • Does anyone know who the lead guitarist is, and what kind of guitar he's playing?

  • @jakollee Doug Pettibone i think.

  • @42smitty42

Yes, Doug Pettibone. Sorry to see him go.

  • @jakollee Doug Pettibone. One of the greats. Looks like he may be playing a Zematis.

  • @MrKim2288 Thanks for the info on Doug Pettibone, he's great!

  • Blues power.

  • This is an awesome performance. I love that the audience waited until the very last note to applaud.

  • This is amazing raw, pure talent from Ms. williams. This don't come along very often.

  • Damn.

  • I love angry chic music, and this is the best.

  • It's great to see Lucinda Wiiliams performing despite her illness She looks and sounds great.

  • She's not sick as far as I know. Her sister is...Or are you thinking of Victoria Williams...?

  • Uh. I've been to Slidell.......just a hop and a skp from New Orleans.......good times. ;-0

  • @kellypeterson55555 And beautiful bayous around it!

  • Love Lucinda - oddly enough my memory of Slidell is saying there as a college student going to the Sugar Bowl. I believe we were asked to pay damages for putting Mr. Bubble in the courtyard fountain.

  • Folks, you just don't get much better than this lady and her "Car Wheels..." CD. Unbelievable. I never tire of listening to it, and it's been about 10 years now!!!

  • Lucinda is THE best female musician/ songwriter of our time, hands down.

Love this song even more because my name is Joy and I'm from Louisiana!

  • she's so intimidating and hot. i want to be her.

  • woof.

  • this is bitching great song

  • aunt lu i miss u love this song by

  • Love this Woman, she rocks!

  • love u Lucinda... but I can assure you that there is zero joy in West Memphis.

  • wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow

  • I'd never take her joy, but I'd love to bring her some! Awesome!!

  • This has the raw, primeval feel of J.Lee Hooker or Jesse Hemphill. I loved Betty Lavette's version but this has the edge. Just love this one to bits.

  • Lucinda is amazing.

    Thank you!

    Great video

  • Doug Pettibone is god

  • I think Keith Richards can safely retire now. Pettibone is on the money!

  • Yes - the lead guitar is increcible on this song!

  • YES, there is joy in Slidell!

  • What kinda guitar is that?

  • James Trussart

  • I saw her last night in KC, doing this number, and I agree - Lucinda is good, but Doug Pettibone stole the show for me. His tone, his fills, his leads were just amazing. Awesome command of his instrument and its many, many voices.

  • damn lead guitarist is tops!!!!!

  • It is to Williams credit that she finds such A level players [ and takes forever to finish a studio album] but here I have to say that Pettibone rises past my 2 heroes, Tom Velaine and Dave Rawlins with a natural ease.

  • that is a mean mf on that guitar. ive been playing for 8 years now but ive never seen anything like him. its not him and his guitar hes has the guitar mounted on his arm. thats a real guitarist.

  • perfect

  • killer

  • I believe that the monster playing guitar is Doug Pettibone and yes we should all pray he has guitar lovin' kids.

  • I believe he stretches out like no one else in the business....I will seek his glorious noise elsewhere.

  • Look, I love Lucinda Williams as much as the next guy, but here I am duty bound to say that her lead guitar player, That Guy, is a monster of the kind we seen once in along generation. Let us pray that he has children.

  • Isn't he playing Bo Ramsey's contribution to this song???

  • lucinda is the best!!!!!!! awsom in concert

  • Lucinda is a master of simplicity. She says so much with so few words. You got no right to take my joy, I want it back. Yes.

  • ugh...i want to buy her dinner.

  • look at her strum she's beautiful

the voice ... i like it a lot

it's expressive singin from bein hurt

    awesome

  • Lucinda Williams central brilliance is her ability to define a very strict sound and hire badass players; the guitar work here can make a blind man see.

  • CHECK OUT GRACE POTTER! she is like a younger lucinda with the same soul and edge to her music. not to mention her amazing songwriting talent! whilst ur at it check me out too :P

  • IMUS Turned me on to Lucinda Williams, I Love her music. and she sings like she has seen ALOT!!!

  • This is a great song to go running to!!

  • I just turned on to LU...she IS a cross between Neil and me thinks Lyle Lovett...she has ahd a lot of pain...her stuff kills me

  • This is why i joined youtube, having a few beers and listening to stuff like Ornette Coleman, Neneh Cherry, Wildwood flower, Los Lobos...I LOVE IT!!

I saw Lucinda a few years ago touring for "Essence" in Montreal and got her autograph. Lovely woman. Thanks for posting this stuff.

  • That guitar player is something of a monster,,,enjoy the distant connections you mentioned as well. And here I add Ribot, Verlaine and Adrain Belew.

  • Bettye LaVette (not Levette)

  • My Bad. Didn't know I stumbled into a spelling bee.

  • I posted that in case somneone was going to look for some music by that person.

  • It's all good.

  • LOVE IT!!! Bettye Levette's rendition is a killer too.

  • Nevermind that the guitar is a conspiracy of razors....and that this dark minded hoe-down seeks only to pry your lazy ribs apart.....and that there is never enough time enough to sleep all the way home.

  • The music sounds a lot like The Doors

  • doors-?---your cracked!

  • If you don't hear the similarities, you don't know squat about music.

  • Minggnim-- Actually I know a lot of squat about music- so describe to me the similarities between the Doors and Lucinda Williams-? I can hardly wait!

  • So you don't hear LA Woman in there?

  • Only in Your mind can I hear that in this song- La woman is 3 times faster- has an intro that slightly resembles the song Tequila (sort of a samba, sort of) and has the signature doors y keyboard- Organ sound- In Joy there's No keyboard, the lyrics certainly aren't remotely similar and the groove is completely different- so uh where is this startling similarity in style?

  • This is clearly a great song witch I like very much due to the intense emotion Lucinda shows on stage. The first time I have heard that song was as part of a live version of the song "Joey" performed by Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. For those who still do not know Grace Potter look at the "Stop The Bus" video on you tube.

"Lucinda Williams is beautiful; she sings like a fallen angel; she kicks ass and takes no prisoners; she coos; she plays a Telecaster; and she writes some of the best songs this country has ever produced. Did I leave anything out?"

No sir, that about sums it all up!

Except there is NO WAY ON EARTH Cheryl Crow will EVER write songs as well as Lucinda.

  • I just heard about Lucinda Williams today from my Spanish teacher... and OMG-ish! I totally fell in love with her style of music as soon as I heard it! She's amazing!

  • Lucinda Williams is beautiful; she sings like a fallen angel; she kicks ass and takes no prisoners; she coos; she plays a Telecaster; and she writes some of the best songs this country has ever produced. Did I leave anything out?

  • rock

    fucking

    solid

  • Love this! Not one thing on this track I don't like and I am really fussy... The lead guitar is brilliant and she is AMAZING

  • Total Agreement--!! Classic Performance- would not change one fucking thing about it (not that I could!) for another classic type in Bob Dylan Isis and hold on to your seat!!!

  • you gave me joy.. sweet baby

  • Cheryl Crow is strong, but has a ways to go. she is younger she has time

  • she IS the prettiest woman in the world-when she is doin her thing that only she can do at that certain time

  • Let's she what Cherryl Crow looks like at 52. Lucinda is hot

  • Cheryl Crow copied Lucinda's sound and voice. Lucinda is one of the best sings alive. She's a female neil young. Tom Petty has covered one of her songs. She's not the prettiest women in the world but, her music is

  • LIKE IT! She is GREAT!

But also the Version of Bettey Lavette Is Really SOULFull! Watch and listen-Joy & Let Me Down Easy(See My Playlist:"Bettey Lavette"

  • She performed this @ JazzFest 07...and rocked the house...I think Lu...might have some anger issues with all of her X's...but somehow they become the inspiration for her great lyrics and music...ladies..can you relate?

  • Awesome take on Lu!

  • Im going to see Lu in Knoxville TN in a few wks and Im so excited. Shes my all time idol. Amazing!!!

  • Big hand for that band. I saw lu open for neil and crazy horse at the garden. that was a show.

  • Great stuff. Love that doug Pettibone's guitar playing. That might be a Gretsch and not a Les Paul he's playing there.

  • Classic performance-!

  • God.. she is awesome .. and the band rocks!!! this is real music...

  • Did I du Lu or did Lu du me?

  • LU FREAKING ROCKS!

  • There is no joy in Slidell!
